Work Text:

The rain lashed down relentlessly on the devastated street of Musutafu, blurring the lines between rubble and asphalt. In the midst of this chaos stood Izuku Midoriya, breathless, his hero costume torn and splattered with mud.

In front of him, in a semicircular formation, stood his classmates from class 1-A of the UA – exhausted, injured, but determined.

They had just fought a fierce battle, not against a villain, but against a friend. Their mission: to bring Izuku back to U.A. But he refused to fall.

Momo Yaoyorozu, whose Quirk: Creation was exhausted from the exertion, straightened up, her gaze a mixture of worry and frustration. "Izuku, please. You can't go on alone."

Izuku wiped a bleeding scratch on his cheek with the back of his hand. The rain mingled with the sweat and dirt on his skin. "I'm sorry, I really am. But I can't come back. Not while All for One is out there."

A collective groan went through the group. Kaminari slumped onto a fallen concrete block, while Kirishima loosened his hardened fists, his disappointment clearly visible.

"Why not?!" exclaimed Mina, her voice almost cracking with emotion. "Why can't you be at UA because of All for One? School is the safest place! We have the best pro heroes, high-security barriers..."

"Because you're not safe around me!" Izuku interrupted, his voice breaking under the weight of his conviction. "He'll attack you to get to me. He already has. He's already hurt so many people I care about. I won't let you be his next target. You'll be safer when I'm gone."

An awkward silence fell, broken only by the steady drumming of rain on metal and stone. Then Ochaco Uraraka took a step forward. She had a bandage around her upper arm, her face was pale with exhaustion, but her eyes were steady.

"Um... Deku?" she began cautiously, somewhat hesitantly. She bit her lip. "I don't mean to sound insulting or ungrateful after everything you've done for us, but... this is just ridiculous."

Izuku blinked as if she'd hit him. His startled gaze met hers. "What... what do you mean?"

Shoto Todoroki stepped beside Ochaco, his left side steaming slightly in the cool rain. "What she means is: How exactly is All for One supposed to stop attacking us?" His voice was calm. "Just because we're not near you doesn't mean he automatically forgets we exist. We're still your friends, Izuku. And we can still be attacked."

Tsuyu Asui, perched on a fallen traffic sign, added in her characteristically direct manner: "All for One knows where we are and that we matter to you. That won't change just because you're hiding. He uses everything as leverage, Ribbit."

Iida raised his arm robotically, his movements still precise, though slower than usual. "Midoriya! As class representative, I must agree with Shoto and Tsuyu! Your absence offers no guarantee of our safety. On the contrary! It deprives us of a crucial strength and divides our unity, which is our greatest defense!"

Izuku looked from one face to the other. He saw not anger or judgment. He saw deep concern. He saw the scars on Katsuki Bakugo's arms, scars he had earned fighting him, just to stop him. He saw the determined look in Tenya Iida's eyes, despite his broken glasses.

"You think you're protecting us by sacrificing yourself," Ochaco said quietly, her gaze softening. "But you're only weakening yourself unnecessarily. You're completely exhausted. Do you really think you can defeat All for One like this? We can help you! We fought the Yakuza together. The Paranormal Liberation Army. Even you can't tackle all the world's problems alone! We're stronger together. Certainly not safer when we're apart."

A flash of lightning illuminated the sky, and for a split second, Izuku saw them all clearly: not as helpless civilians, but as heroes. As his friends. The logic that had driven him for weeks—that his presence posed a danger—began to crumble under their collective gaze.

"He has Tomura Shigaraki..." Izuku began, but his voice lost its power.

"And we have you," Katsuki finished with a growl, without looking at him. "And we have each other. That damned All for One wants a world where we can only survive because of him. By isolating yourself, you make it easier for him to achieve his goal. You're playing by his rules, nerd."

The words cut Izuku deeper than any physical blow during the fight. He had seen himself as a shield, but in reality, he had become a barricade separating them.

Momo spoke again. "UA isn't just a building, Izuku. It's our base. Our home. And you belong there. With us. Together we can make plans, prepare, and become stronger. Not alone, but together."

Izuku lowered his head. The fighting spirit that had kept his body upright until then seemed to drain away from him. The fear that had driven him gave way to another, new kind of fear—the fear of truly losing them all through his stubbornness.

He looked at his trembling hands, at the scars that crisscrossed his fingers. One for All pulsed within him, a power passed on for protection. But protection didn't always mean standing between the danger and those to be protected. Sometimes it meant standing side by side.

Slowly, as if every movement required an enormous effort, he raised his gaze. His green eyes, shining with determination and exhaustion, met those of his friends.

"You... you all fought. So hard. Just to stop me." His voice was barely more than a whisper.

"We're fighting for you, you green idiot," Katsuki said, this time with a direct, unambiguous look. "Not against you."

A shiver ran down Izuku's shoulders. It wasn't the cold. It was the realization that he had been wrong. That his friends had thought further ahead than he had.

With a deep, trembling breath that appeared as a small cloud in the rainy air, he straightened up completely.

"You're right," he said, quietly but clearly. "Alone... I'm just an easier target, and I'm not protecting you at all." He looked at Ochaco. "That was stupid, actually. Thanks for saying it."

A collective sigh of relief went through Class 1-A. Ochaco's eyes filled with tears that mingled with the rain. A small, tired smile appeared on Shoto's lips. Momo let his shoulders slump.

"So?" said Iida, adjusting his glasses even though they were broken. "Are we going home?"

Izuku nodded. The rain seemed to ease, becoming a gentle drizzle. He stepped toward his waiting friends, and when he reached the gap between them, they no longer formed a confrontational line, but an open circle. They surrounded him not as an opponent, but as his classmates.

Together, under the brightening sky, they set off on the long journey back to UA – not as rescuers and rescued, but as heroes who had finally understood that their greatest strength never lay in isolation, but in the unbreakable bond between them.
