In Country E, breaking a bonded mate requires a brutal visit to the ABO Regulation Centre, where Alpha bond officer Matthew Adlers spends his days burning over old bite marks and listening to the tragedies of broken homes. He thinks he's seen it all.. Until Ezra walks in.

Ezra is a fragile Omega with a soft, flowery scent, abandoned by his Alpha to face the agonizing burning iron alone. He doesn't scream during the burn, but the heartbreak in his tears leaves Matthew completely shaken.

When a chance encounter brings Matthew into Ezra’s vintage flower shop weeks later, a quiet romance begins to bloom. But as they try to build a new life together, they must navigate the physical toll of Ezra's damaged pheromones, misunderstandings, and the painful shadows of a past that insists Ezra is too broken to be loved.

Notes:

Every Omegaverse story depands on the writer. So, this is mine. I had an idea where what if the alpha doesn't want their bonded omega anymore? How will they erase the bite marks when it's permanent?

Article 42 of Country E

Chapter Text

Article 42 of Country E

The rain in the capital of Country E wasn’t washing anything away; it just made the smell of wet pavement and car exhaust stick around. Outside, the state-run ABO Regulation Centre looked like a giant, ugly concrete block. Inside, it smelled like a swimming pool, bleach and heavy-duty suppressants everywhere, trying to mask the fact that human biology is messy.

But no amount of industrial cleaner could get rid of the heavy vibe left behind by Article 42.

How Things Got This Messed Up

To understand why this place was so terrifying, you have to look back at the late 80s. Back then, things were a bit of a disaster. The pharma companies hadn't perfected suppressants yet; whatever pills were on the market were sketchy, way too expensive, and impossible for normal people to get. Because of that, ministries were flooded with complaints from alphas. Their excuse? They kept "accidentally" biting omegas who hit sudden, public heats, claiming they just couldn't help themselves. Suddenly, the country had an epidemic of unwanted, accidental bonds, unions locked in by a stray bite that nobody actually wanted, but the law still forced them to stick to.

That’s where Ethan Adlers came in.

He was a climbing minister in the ABO Regulation Centre who saw a perfect chance to make a name for himself. He pitched a radical new law to the king, basically arguing that alphas shouldn't have to pay for a "mistake" for the rest of their lives. If a bond was an accident, or if an alpha simply wanted out, the state needed a permanent, foolproof way to rip that bond apart.

The king, wanting to keep the powerful alpha upper class happy, signed off on it without a second thought. And just like that, Article 42 was born. A law written by alphas, approved by royalty, and paid for by omegas.

The Waiting Room from Hell

- YEAR 1988 -

Arthur Willer sat on the edge of the examination table, trying to stop his hands from shaking. Every time he shifted, the paper liner crinkled loudly, which didn't help his nerves. He was wearing one of those standard hospital gowns that left his neck completely bare and defenseless.

Across the room stood Julian Rovan.

Julian, his alpha. Or, well, the person who wouldn't be his alpha anymore in about twenty minutes. He looked perfect, as usual, sharp charcoal suit, not a hair out of place, acting like he was waiting for a business meeting rather than a medical execution. He kept checking his watch. His scent, which used to smell like warm cedarwood, was now totally cold and distant.

Under Article 42, you couldn't just sign a divorce paper and call it a day. The law legally required the alpha to be physically present for the whole thing. It was a brutal psychological rule; the state wanted the alpha to watch the destruction of the bond they created, ensuring absolute consent.

"The doctor should be here soon," Julian said, his voice flat. He didn't look at Arthur. He hadn't actually looked at him since they signed the initial paperwork.

Arthur just nodded, tucking his chin down. His fingers unconsciously drifted up to his neck, brushing the sensitive skin where Julian had bitten him a year ago. It was a perfect, healed mark that had locked their bodies and emotions into sync. Undoing it required state-sanctioned violence.

The heavy door clicked open, and Dr. Yakaie walked in with a couple of burly orderlies. Behind them, a tech wheeled in a cart with a heavy iron stamp attached to a heating element. The metal stamp was shaped like the country’s official seal, a crown wrapped in iron thorns.

"Arthur Willer? Julian Rovan?" Dr. Yakaie asked, glancing at his tablet.

"Yes," Julian said, firm and clear.

"Paperwork is all cleared," the doctor said, turning to Arthur. "Pregnancy tests came back negative. As you know, under Article 42, if an omega is pregnant, we legally have to delay the procedure until after the birth to protect the fetus from the hormonal shock. Since you're clear, we can move forward."

Arthur swallowed the lump in his throat. "Okay."

"Julian Rovan, do you give your final consent for this burning?"

"I do," Julian said. He moved into the designated viewing square on the floor. He had to watch.

The Burning

The ABO officer didn't waste time. They had Arthur lie face down on the table, securing his forehead into a padded brace so he couldn't move his neck. Arthur’s heart was hammering against his ribs.

"We're putting on a topical numbing gel," Dr. Yakaie muttered, rubbing something cold onto Arthur's nape. "But because we have to destroy the tissue pretty deeply to clear out the alpha's imprint, the gel is only going to take the edge off the initial touch. It's going to hurt."

Hurt was an understatement.

Arthur squeezed his eyes shut. He could hear the low, electric hum of the heating element warming up the iron. The smell of ozone filled the room, followed by a wave of intense heat hovering just above his skin.

Ethan Adlers had designed this procedure to be intentionally archaic and brutal. It was supposed to be a deterrent, a physical reminder of the state's power. They didn't surgically cut the mark out; they literally burned it away, melting the deep-seated scent glands where the bond lived.

"Hold still," the doctor said.

Then came the iron.

Arthur’s brain went totally white. The pain tore right through the numbing gel like white-hot lightning. A sickening hiss filled the room, the sound of his own skin cooking under the state seal, followed by the awful, oily smell of burning pheromones.

He didn't even realize he was screaming until his throat went raw. It was a totally primal sound. The bond didn't just snap; it felt like a physical wire being violently ripped out of his chest, sending his whole nervous system into shock. Through the fog of pain, he noticed Julian’s scent spike, a sudden, automatic flash of biological distress from the alpha but Julian didn't move. The law said he couldn't.

For ten seconds, the iron stayed pressed down, melting flesh and destroying nerve endings.

When they finally lifted it, Arthur collapsed onto the table, shaking uncontrollably and crying into the padding. The bond was gone. There was just a burning, empty void left behind.

The Fallout

The immediate burn was just the start of the nightmare. As the ABO officer bandaged his ruined neck, Arthur could already feel his body starting to crash.

The biggest consequence of Article 42 was Pheromone Disorder Syndrome (PDS). By frying the neck gland, your entire endocrine system gets thrown into a tailspin. Human bodies just aren't built to handle a sudden, artificial separation like that.

Over the next few weeks, Arthur was going to have to deal with a harsh new reality:

Chronic Fatigue: A deep, permanent exhaustion that no amount of coffee or sleep could fix, because his body’s hormone production was totally busted.

Volatile Scent Drops: His usually sweet scent would randomly sour into a bitter, stressed mess without warning, letting everyone know he was biologically damaged.

Emotional Vulnerability: Without his natural hormones keeping him steady, he'd be totally defenseless against random anxiety attacks and deep depression.

And the physical symptoms were only half the problem; the social fallout was brutal. Some omegas completely lost their pheromones from the procedure, turning into biological ghosts who couldn't project a scent or have a normal heat cycle, making them essentially sterile.

Then there was the scar itself. The iron stamp left a thick, ugly, permanent mark of the state seal right on the neck. You couldn't easily hide it. In a society that obsessed over the romance of alpha-omega bonds, walking around with that scar was a massive badge of shame. It was a loud, public announcement to everyone in Country E that your alpha didn't want you anymore, threw you away, and sent you to the regulation center to get burned.

The Long Recovery

Hours later, the adrenaline had totally worn off, leaving Arthur shivering and feeling completely empty in a dim recovery room. Julian was already gone, he’d signed the final release papers the second the iron lifted, legally cutting all ties and walking away.

A nurse walked in with a tray of meds and a thick packet of stapled papers.

"Mr. Willer," she said quietly, looking at him with the kind of pity that made him want to hide under the blanket. "The procedure went fine. You're officially single in the royal registry. Now we need to go over your mandatory aftercare."

Under Article 42, the state forced you into a rigid twelve-month rehab program so your body didn't completely shut down from the shock.

"You're legally required to complete this," the nurse said, setting the packet on his bedside table.

《ARTICLE 42 MANDATORY AFTERCARE PROTOCOL》

1. Scent Gland Healing

6 Months of daily prescription creams to manage the scarring and tissue damage.

2. Meditations

6 Months of mandatory mental grounding to handle the emotional PDS spikes.

3. Therapy Sessions

Weekly state-monitored mental health check-ins.

"The first six months are all about physical healing," she explained, tapping her own neck. "You'll be applying heavy-duty creams to keep the wound clean and help the skin scar over the dead nerves. At the same time, you'll start six months of meditation to help your brain adjust to the fact that your alpha’s scent is suddenly gone."

Arthur just stared at the ceiling. He didn't dare move his hand near the thick gauze taped over his burning neck. He could feel the coldness settling in, the slow arrival of PDS, the quiet draining of his energy.

He was finally free of Julian, but he was stuck with the permanent mark of the law. He was just another scarred omega facing a very long, very quiet future.
