Chapter 1: ONE

Chapter Text

The first time Nami and Vivi met, the blue-haired one tried to hurt the other.

Not out of malice, but out of necessity. Vivi had a mission, and Nami was in her way. The navigator's nails grazed the air near the princess's face. The Kujakki Slashers sliced through the air close to her orange-tinted temples. It was fast, dirty, and absolutely electrifying.

Fights with any member of Baroque Works were like that: messy, with the sole purpose of eliminating the target. But she didn't want to eliminate that target.

Vivi felt every movement Nami made — the economy of gesture, the precision in every dodge, the gleam in her eyes of someone who wasn't going to lose for lack of strategy.

"She's strong," Vivi thought, sidestepping a blow that would have badly bruised her ribs. "And she's not just a pretty face."

There, in the middle of the conflict, with her blue hair plastered to her sweaty face and her hands bound behind her back — held by Nami — Vivi realized that the orange-haired woman was different from any enemy she had ever faced.

Hours later, they would be on the same side. But that fight stayed with her — like the first chapter of a story she didn't know she was writing.

Joining the Going Merry had never been part of Vivi's plans.

No diplomatic strategy included a ship with a ram's head, a cook who floated with love for her, a sniper who lied through his teeth, a swordsman who slept at every opportunity and drank sake like it was water, and a captain who wore sandals, a straw hat, and wanted to be the King of the Pirates.

She should have gotten off at the first island. Kept going. Returned to Alabasta alone.

But she didn't get off. And it wasn't just strategy.

It was because, on the first night aboard the ship, when she woke up in the middle of the night from a nightmare filled with crocodiles and desert, someone was already awake on deck. Nami. Lit by the moonlight, her hair slightly tousled by the wind, a map on her lap and a tangerine split in half.

Without a word, the navigator held out half of the fruit to Vivi.

"Eat. Sugar helps on turbulent nights."

Vivi ate. And she stayed.

And in the days that followed, from one island to the next, Vivi and Nami grew closer. Vivi thought it might have been because they were the only women on the Going Merry, but deep down she knew it wasn't just that.

One night, she found Nami alone on deck, a blanket over her shoulders, her nose and cheeks red from the cold. The princess knew when someone wanted to be alone, lost in their own thoughts. But just as she turned to leave, she heard her voice — low and steady:

"Don't just stand there. Come here, or go back to bed."

Vivi's cheeks flushed, but she sat beside the redhead, and before she knew it, they were sharing the blanket, sharing their warmth.

And the princess's heart was pounding like mad.

During the time she sailed the seas, explored islands, faced enemies, and discovered things about herself, Vivi learned the meaning of found family.

She learned that Usopp lied to hide his fear — and that, too, was courage. That Sanji fed bodies and souls in equal measure. That Zoro stood there in silence, but protected without hesitation. That Chopper healed without asking where the wound came from. That Luffy understood more than anyone because he never overcomplicated things.

And she learned that the Going Merry wasn't just wood and sails. It was a heartbeat, pulsing to the rhythm of every person on board — none of whom had anything in common, except everything that mattered.

Vivi didn't want to leave that strange, chaotic, dysfunctional group.

She wanted to wake up every day to the sound of Luffy's feet running toward breakfast, to the smell of Sanji's smoke drifting from the kitchen, to Zoro's distant snoring, to Usopp's nervous laugh, to Chopper's little hooves on the deck.

She wanted to stay.

And she especially wanted to stay for the orange-haired woman who smelled like tangerines.

Vivi didn't know when it had started. Maybe at the fight, when she realized Nami was strong. Maybe at the first shared tangerine. Maybe the night Nami laughed for real — not the negotiation laugh, not the con artist smile, but a loose, silly laugh, while Vivi told a story from her childhood back in the kingdom.

Vivi's heart stopped for a second. And then it raced.

She told herself no. That it couldn't be.

But it was. It was exactly that.

Every glance that lingered a moment too long. Every excuse to sit closer. Every time that orange hair caught the sunlight and Vivi forgot what she was about to say. Every time Nami invaded her personal space, she caught that sweet, citrusy scent so distinctively hers.

She was, yes, completely gone for Nami — and it terrified her.

Vivi didn't know what to do with it.

How could she be a princess, a diplomat, a warrior — and at the same time want to bury herself in the neck of a woman who smelled like fruit, musk, and sea salt?

She didn't know. But deep down, she suspected she didn't need to know just yet.

Especially when her goal was a single one: to save her kingdom.

Alabasta was waiting for her.

But she — being just a little selfish for the first time in her life — wanted to explore what she was feeling for someone as special as Nami.
