Work Text:
Paramedic and The surgeon were in a pre established relationship. They worked together and were even lucky enough to share a lunch break.
Sure they've done scandalous things on the job, but paramedic was a lover boy and surgeon was uhh I didn't think that far
Either way today paramedic had woken up late, his fiance gone and had left work assuming his love would call in sick because he had tried to wake him up.
But paramedic was stiff as a corpse after a failed surgery, definitely not known from experience.
So he left him a bottle of water, and refilled his empty medicine box before taking the car to work.
When paramedic had awoken, he realized what happened, so much so he didn't take his medication or drink water, when rushing to get ready for his shift at the hospital.
He was sore with out the meds, he hit his knee on the couch and even knocked over their picture on the way out without realizing.
When he got out the apartment and into the shared driveway he realized that the car was gone, so he looked for a bus stop.
The next bus is in 3 hours. Looks like he's walking.

At the hospital he was 5 hours late for his 16 hour shift. Covered in a overstimulating sheet sweat and stressed, trying not to cry.
He ran into the front room to clock in, the interns staring at each other then looking back at him. He looked at them and took the coffee. But when he looked down. He forgot his lucky pen.
He had to sign his name on the clock in sheet.
"Ah, um. Secretary, do you have a 2nd pen I can borrow for the day?"
"..no. you should've brought your own. They don't supply us with spares. I'm sorry."
"Uh, nevermind it's alright"
He placed his paper down he'd just uhh clock in when he got here later! Yeah, that how this works.
The interns were helping the patient in the room 1-5 paramedic was waiting for patients in rooms 7 or 6. But no one arrived just yet so he went to the locker room, it was nice they had locker rooms. Maybe he'd left a pen in his. He opened it? Nothing.
"Shit."
He looked at the other lockers to find his partners and tried to remember his code only to end up fucking locking it up permanently for a 1hour.
It's fine as long as surgeon doesn't come out of surgery soon.
Then a yell, he had a patient in room six.
"Hello, I'm the paramedic that will be seeing you today, what going on today? I'm just gonna poke you real quickly"
". . Ow!"
He said as he injected his patient with the needle. He missed the vien.
He missed the fucking vein. OF COURSE. He undid it and got it right 2nd try. He then went to other side hooking up more machines.
"Could you be more slow your stressing me out" coming from said patients direction.
"Hm? Oh yes. I'm sorry."
Paramedic did the readings tapped what he needed and moved over to the slow processing computer, as he heard a noise outside the door.
"GROWGHRL..."
anomaly.
The door creaked as he realized he forgot his Taser at home. Actually, his phone isn't on him. Neither is his fucking id.
Last thing he knew is he was throwing his fist into a large gaping red hole as his patient ran out with the IV needle in her arm still. Screaming. God the screams. The buzzing of the lights. The wires and the ringing. Everything is so louder. This coat is sticking to his inner arms. And he didn't see anyone coming in to help, his sanity was low.
Finally he sees a pink blob.
Intern. Everything goes fuzzy as he barely processed two interns taking him to break room, then the front office. He was sat in the corner by the coffee, the yellow intern had just taken it so he had around 2 minutes to wait.
The coffee maker was loud. The chairs squeaking was loud. The bugs in the over head lights were moving. The bell ringing. The computer processing.
His coworkers asking him if he's okay and explaining everything to the security guard. Damn. This day was bad.
But then a deer walked in. Not just any deer. His beloved surgeon. At first he was so happy to see him.
Completely unaware that his lovey had just failed a surgery because he distracted him. He forgot the volume rules in their west hall.
"Paramedic. You should've just stayed home. How did you even get here?!"
"I... I walked."
"Do you have your ID on you?"
Surgeon looked to the side and saw paramedics sheet he wasn't even clocked in.
"What are you doing, you aren't even clocked in!? Your working off hours? Are you missing something."
"Oh... That what I forgot."
Paramedic checked his coat for a pen. "Oh."
"Mhm." He didn't make much eye contact with the surgeon.
" You walked here. Didn't get dressed properly to code. Didn't fucking clock in. Do you even have your ID on you?"
Paramedic looked down at himself. What, he could've sworn he was ready, no. He had inside out shirt, and a dirty and ironed puff jacket on.
" I.. I don't know what I was doing then.."
Paramedic tried to laugh it off. But no one else was watching. The head nurse was writing something furiously, patients were being held in the waiting room, because secretary was judging.
Security and agent were watching from the door way. The interns were also there. He was a mess.
"Did you take your meds, or even eat or drink? Have you remembered to use the restroom."
Thinking about it now, he suddenly felt pain all over his lower body, the soreness was back the noises amped, his throat dry, his bladder hurt. And his stomach aches. Badly.
He reached up at his fiance who stood up straight to avoid touch from previously bending over him.
"Did you pack lunch? Did you lock the front door? You need to go home. I'll take the bus when my shift is over because this is bullshit. Take the car."
Just then a little tune played to tell them as the nurses shop opened. The doctor had been watching too. Oh.. most of their coworkers abandoned the situation in hopes for good shop items and to small talk with the nurse but before Secretary left.
"I tried to tell him. He was out of it coming in."
Secretary left after making that comment to Dr Harlow. Who came in and moved surgeon aside to speak to paramedic.
"Paramedic. My right hand man practically. What's gotten into you. I suggest you go home before you make things worse for yourself. Because of your ADHD I'll accommodate you 2 hours to get ready and then book it. Your practically sabotaging your other coworkers."
Dr Harlow sighed and walked away into the door by the nurses shop.
Everything was moving so fast, especially dr Harlow.. such a unnatural way of speaking..
Paramedic tried to grab onto surgeon again, paramedic was now crying and shaking his head, he didn't mean to fuck shit up. He swore he had it together. Surgeon pulled him up and kissed his forehead.
Due to the fact paramedic wouldn't look up from the ground. His finger shaking around his partners wrist. He held his breath trying to stop the tears. Ugly crying was the only real crying he knew, it was hard to be pretty when you couldn't breath.
He followed surgeon. Who was still obviously seething from how avoidable this all was to the locker room. Surgeon went his locker. It was safety locked.
Because of paramedic guessing the number wrong. Paramedics tail hung in between his legs as his partner came up to him, speaking much this time.
As paramedic dig his snotty and slobbered face into his shoulder.
"Did you safety lock it..?"
Paramedic whined loudly like a child, obviously having a meltdown from everything outside. He at first shook his head no lying to his fiance. Before mumbling and stuttering out a
"Mhm" hiccups and taking a few struggled deep breaths as surgeons hands came down his spine, his legs bucked forward into surgeons legs.
"I was going to feed you some of my lunch and a electrolyte drink.."
Paramedic immediately whined again at the lost of a meal.
"You're alright."
Paramedic was mostly whimpers now as he was calming down. The locker room was quiet. There were no electronics. Paramedic looked for camera before fixing his shirt finally.
It was 5 minutes til surgeons lunchtime, 2 of the interns would work together to take his spot temporarily. He'd drive his Paramedic home, not trusting him to zone out, or maladaptive daydream and crash.
"You need to emotionally regulate better."
Paramedic didn't like that though. And pushed him off curling his arms up together rubbing his knuckles together.
" IM FUCKING TRYING. ITS HARD. ITS DIFFERENT THAN TAKING A FEW DEEP BREATHS I CANT JUST STOP WHAT IM DOING TO STIM FOR EMOTIONAL REGULATION, AND IT MAKES MY PATIENTS WEIRDED OUT. AND NOW IM GETTING WRITTEN UP."
"...are you still hungry love..?"
"Yeah.."
Paramedic finally looked up off the ground, still pissy. Everything had gone wrong. And he was missing out on money to help his fiance pay rent, but groceries and bills.
Surgeon grabbed his stuff and lead Paramedic out to the car. Paramedic still messing with his knuckles, but his partner drove him home.
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
He zoned out. Didn't even notice they were home. He was so exhausted.
Surgeon left, didn't even miss goodbye. Or say anything when he got out the car.
Of course though because the man had just been shoved off him awhile ago and didn't want to test his luck after paramedics meltdown, and him still being very sensitive and easy to tip over.
Even if Paramedic had shown signs of being alright, he was still out of it and zoned out as he went up the apartment and up the stairs skipping that crowed hot loud elevator. He walked past the photo.. but stopped and turned back around. He picked up the glass pocketing some and throwing the rest away.
Through his haze of doing god knows what, he snapped back to reality hours later... To see surgeon in front of him, Paramedic was in the bathtub nude. Drooling a bit.. surgeon had his hands on his hips, it was grounding for paramedic hence the sudden awareness of the surroundings.
The water had automatically shut off hours ago, it was set up to shut off automatically because Paramedic would get distracted during rinse offs and start everything showers. But Paramedic's legs still hurt. Not because they were sore.. his rib hurt too and he saw some glass on the bathroom ground.
He hadn't thrown the photo or glass away and had relapsed. One bad day.. one horrific day. And a fallen photo. That all it took to temp him.
7 years clean for what. This was a lot more than just 2 steps back... He laid his forehead on surgeon collar bone, he couldn't look at surgeons eyes.. he was ashamed.. his tail was lifted up wiggling because close contact, but his ears were stressed out.
Surgeon didn't speak.. he didn't want to be mad. To yell and scream. Right this second, at this exact moment, thats the last thing Paramedic needs, another loud noise and scary silhouette.
". . ."
Neither could speak.paramedic slowly climbed his nude body onto surgeons lap. How long had surgeon been staring, how far and in between were the cuts from styros..
Until surgeon leaned back
"As long as they aren't styros, you aren't completely back at square one. And even if they are.. WE. can get better.."
"7 years.." was all Paramedic could think.. "I missed my meds one day.."
Surgeon landed kisses and licks on the deers neck and jaw for every non styrofoam cut there was..
"Hey, only 1 stryo this time..." A few more caresses..
"I'm covered in dry blood.. can we take a bath..?"
