Work Text:

It started, like most utter nonsense in Legend's life, in the middle of an everyday chore.

He had been in firewood collecting duty—meandering through the tree spotted wilds through which their brother was named—when a creature he had never seen before popped into being. And he did mean 'popped.' One moment there was nothing and the next there was. A rabbit-shaped creature, but certainly not a rabbit. It had wide, unsettling eyes, a blue glow, and antennae like a moth's up against lantern glass.

At the sight of it, Legend reacted on instinct, thinking it to be a monster. He went for his sword, dropping the bundle of wood in his arms, fingers brushing against the hilt of the holy blade upon his back. He was just about to draw when he froze as it hit him.

It was the magic, the power, pouring off the creature in rolling waves. It was vast and endless but it was not Dark, nor was it Light. It was merely power.

It was primal, and nameless, as old as the earth beneath his feet. Like a fairy. Like a woodland god. Legend hesitated, unsure what customs this land kept, what ritual and rite was expected of him before such a spirit.

Kindness and deference would have to do, he decided after a moment, and moved to comply.

Legend avoided looking the being in the eye. The first glance had been dizzying, sent his head spinning, and felt wrong. He was not keen to repeat the disorientation, so he kept his eyes carefully down.

He sank in slow even movements to his knees before the spirit, head bowed, expressing what he hoped was the correct level of deference.

He could see it, still, by the emanating light that poured out from it, approaching him, sniffing, measuring him up. Legend swallowed, and waited to find out if he had managed to anger a local god or not by mistake.

The moment lingered, stretched.

And then the spirit lunged.

In one quick, sure motion, it bites through the string holding Legend's pouch of magic powder to his belt and darts away, prize between it's rabbit-like teeth.

"Hey!" Legend yelled, scrambling to his feet to give chase, "get back here!"
