Chapter Text
Kojiro Nanjo was a tall, strong, and stupid farmer’s boy. He had lived on his parents’ ranch all his life and knew nothing other than it. Of course, when he wasn’t at the ranch, he was getting into trouble. He was alone in the act, and was bored to death all the time. After all, he had no siblings and lived in Texas in the middle of nowhere. But finally, it became summer, and in the first week, Kojiro’s mother announced that an old friend would come to visit for the summer. Of course he thought it was bullshit, he had to deal with his mother and her friend’s constant rambling, but then, she announced she had a son, his name was Kaoru. The summer might be more interesting than Kojiro originally thought.
4 days after the announcement, they arrived. They drove a smaller call, much smaller than Kojiro’s family truck. When Kojiro came downstairs to greet the guy, he was astonished, he was different than anyone he’s ever seen. He stood about 5’9, had pale-ish soft skin and had this long pink hair. It was silky.. it looked silky at least. It was up in a low ponytail and pink bangs covered half of his face. He looked at him with rested brown eyes and long eyelashes.
“Hey. I’m Kaoru.”
He stared. He stared so effortlessly beautifully. Just standing there made him look majestic. Stop- that’s weird. He’s a dude, you’re a dude. That’s what Kojiro thought the moment he say Kaoru. Guys can’t compliment guys, much less like them.
“U-Uh. I’m Kojiro.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“Same to you.”
Kojiro’s mother rushed him to show Kaoru to his room. So he did. They went up wooden country stairs to a loft-looking room. It had wood all over and a bunk bed in the back with a desk in the front. The decorations were cozy, giving a vibe of an old lady’s house, florals, pastel-ish colors, and vintage looking trinkets.
Kaoru looked around, then put his bags down. His hair rested perfectly on his shoulders when he bent down. He started to walk around, and then sat at the desk chair, his baggy jeans spreading out on the light pink cushion. Even his silver jewelry clanked when he sat. He rested his arms down, completely exposed since he had on a tank top. He was skinny, girlish looking.
“Do you… like it?” Kojiro asked unknowingly. Kaoru nodded. He looked around, his lashes were almost angelic. He looked like an angel, so perfect without even trying, Kojiro wondered how he did it.
“I like it. Kinda cozy looking.”
Kojiro ruffled his hair. He was happy to see Kaoru happy, he barely knew him, but he liked him.
“I’m glad. Do you need anything?”
Kojiro secretly prayed Kaoru would ask for something, anything. Just to get some extra time together, he was so interested in Kaoru. He wanted to know just about everything.
“Not to be a chore, but I’m a bit hungry.”
Kojiro was ecstatic inside. He was going through options and options of what they could do together. He couldn’t get ahead of himself, it’s just a small interaction.
“Do you want to go into town to get something?”
Kaoru seemed to start thinking. Kojiro was stupid, so stupid. Of course he didn’t want to go into town to get something with someone he just met. What was he thinking? That’s when Kaoru answered-
“Sure.”
Kojiro’s eyes widened. How weird, he actually wanted to go into town with him? He was prepared to get completely rejected.
“Oh- okay. Um, we can go to the diner?”
Kaoru nodded. “Are we leaving now?”
“If you want to.”
“Okay then, show me the way.”
Kojiro stood at the doorway and waited for Kaoru. Then they left to the diner together.
The way to the town was a short dirt path, scattered with rocks and surrounded by grassy fields. There were no trees, it was Texas. Most of it was fields and farms. After about 5 minutes of walking, the town came into view. It was a small one, with a few shops and restaurants.
“Well we’re here. Sorry it’s not much.”
Kaoru looked, with those same brown eyes. They were more of a honey since golden hour was starting. “Nice.” He said, that’s all he said. Kojiro was having an internal battle with himself, what the fuck was this guy’s problem? He’s impossible to read and show’s almost no emotion. Maybe Kojiro had to get him to open up? It was a slow process, but it might work.
They got into the diner not too much later and sat down at a booth. It was a stereotypical diner with red and white seats and stained wooden tables. They had a bunch of band posters hanging up on the wall and a jukebox in the corner. It was semi-full, maybe about half, not bad for a small country town.
When the waitress finally came up to ask for drinks, Kojiro ordered a soda and Kaoru ordered a strawberry milkshake.
“You know, if you drink too much of that stuff it will mess up your health.” Kaoru looked up from his milkshake. And stared, again. Of course, Kojiro didn’t mind if he stared. Actually, Kojiro liked it when Kaoru stared, it gave him an excuse to stare back.
Kojiro fiddled with his soda straw, “Where the hell did you get that from?” He asked.
“It’s basic science.” Kaoru answered, his eyes still locked on Kojiro’s. Under the table, Kaoru messed with the rings on his slender fingers. Kojiro could hear the sounds from above the table. He wondered what it would be like to hold those hands. He was interrupted of his thought when Kaoru spoke again, “Did you not take basic science or something?”
“No. It’s just they didn’t really teach us the harmful side effects of soda. It was more of… oh I don’t know, actual earth science?” Kojiro answered.
“Well, then enjoy your cancer coke.” Kaoru went back to drinking his milkshake. He was hiding a small smile form on his lips, Kojiro noticed of course, while looking at those pink soft lips. They were perfect, just like a girl’s.
“It won’t give me cancer, that’s just a stupid theory.” Kojiro stared back at Kaoru, his eyes glowing a specific shade of medium brown. His brows were thick and slightly furrowed. His hands were on the table, and his green flannel went slightly below his elbow.
“Yeah sure. The earth must be flat too.” Kaoru kept his gaze. His hands now rested on the table, and his ear piercings shining from the light of the sunset.
Kojiro rolled his eyes and leaned back into the booth. This guy really didn’t stop did he? He didn’t care, he’s dealt with much worse.
Kaoru yawned. The waitress came back to ask for orders, we both just ordered a classic hamburger with fries.
“The drive over here really was boring. What do you even do here?” Kaoru blurted out of nowhere. Now messing with the ends of his ponytail.
“Ah, um. I keep myself entertained.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“Well, I explore around I guess?”
“Oh… you do that like- all the time?”
“Just going to be honest here. It gets boring, but maybe this summer will be better.”
“Hope so.”
Kaoru continued to slurp his milkshake slowly.
After a bit, the food came. Kaoru ate slower, and almost gracefully. Kojiro ate faster, and just however he wanted. Still, they both enjoyed their meals.
Outside, it became darker, the sun almost setting, but still, a slight orange hew came over the sky. After they finished their meals, they stood up to go back home.
Kojiro adjusted his belt on his jeans and left thirty dollars on the table. “Ready to head out?” He asked.
“Sure.” Kaoru answered.
And so they did, the light orange light flooding onto their bodies as they stepped outside. And they walked back to Kojiro’s house. Into the sunset, and into a great fucking summer.
