Chapter 1: prelude

Chapter Text

the kitchen was alive long before either of them spoke. it buzzed with the restless hum of the overhead light, flickering faintly, and the stovetop crackled with the uneven rhythm of oil sizzling in a pan, sending up thin curls of heat that blurred at the edges of the room. utensils clattered against the counter in a disorganized symphony, the kind that suggested someone was fighting the food instead of just cooking it.

and yet, even with all that noise, the space felt strangely expectant, as though it were holding its breath, waiting for the two people inside it to ignite the real chaos.

tomoya stood at the counter like he owned the entire kitchen, pink hair tied back in a loose knot that was already slipping free. his posture was relaxed but his eyes were sharp, bright with the kind of mischief that always preceded trouble. he held a spatula in his hand, tapping it lightly against the edge of the pan with a rhythm that was half impatience, half challenge.

hyui leaned against the fridge, arms folded, blonde hair falling into his eyes in soft strands he didn’t bother to push away. he watched tomoya with the steady, resigned expression of someone who had been through this exact scenario too many times to count and knew exactly how it would unfold.

meat first,” tomoya announced, his voice slicing through the kitchen’s ambient noise like a spark catching dry tinder.

hyui didn’t move. “vegetables first.”

tomoya turned slowly, dramatically, as though hyui had just uttered something sacrilegious. “hyui. think about it. the meat needs time to brown.”

and the vegetables need time to soften,” hyui countered, pushing off the fridge and taking a few steps forward.

“undercooked vegetables are better than undercooked meat.”

“or we could just go get yu and he can cook for us.”

tomoya’s eyes widened, affronted. “oh, so you don't want to cook with me?”

hyui’s lips twitched. “you cook like you’re trying to start a fire.”

tomoya gasped loudly, theatrically, clutching the spatula to his chest as though hyui had stabbed him with it. “i'll have you know my cooking is-”

“terrible,” hyui finished, deadpan.

tomoya pointed the spatula at him, stepping closer until the tip hovered near hyui’s chest. “you’re mean.”

hyui shrugged, unbothered. “you started it.”

their voices rose and fell, overlapping in a familiar cadence that had become part of their identity. their friends joked that tomoya and hyui didn’t communicate like normal people; they argued like it was a language only they understood. they bickered about everything, from cooking methods to walking pace, from movie choices to who forgot to buy milk. it was constant, ridiculous, and somehow comforting.

but today, something felt different.

hyui’s heart thudded in his chest with a force that startled him, each beat overwhelming, too insistent, drowning out the sizzling pan and tomoya’s dramatic huffing. he watched the way tomoya’s pink hair slipped loose from its tie, the way his eyes sparkled when he was riled up, the way he leaned in just a little too close when he argued, and hyui felt something inside him tighten, coil, strain.

he used to enjoy this.

the banter.
the noise.
the way tomoya’s voice filled every corner of a room.

but now, every sarcastic reply felt like a shield he was forcing himself to hold up. every argument felt like a way to avoid saying something real. every “shh” from tomoya felt like a hand pressed over his mouth, keeping everything he wanted to say locked inside.

tomoya didn’t notice. of course he didn’t. he was too busy being loud.

hyui, you’re not even helping,” tomoya complained, turning back to the stove with a dramatic flick of his wrist. “you’re just standing there judging me.”

“i'm supervising,” hyui said, stepping closer.

“you’re annoying.”

“you like it.”

tomoya paused just for a heartbeat, just long enough for hyui to notice the subtle stiffening of his shoulders. it was only a flicker of tension, but hyui had always been attuned to tomoya in ways he couldn’t explain.

then tomoya scoffed, brushing it off. “shh, let me cook.”

the sound hit hyui harder than it should have. shh. tomoya said it all the time - teasingly, dismissively, affectionately, carelessly. but today it felt like a push, like a reminder of everything hyui wasn’t saying, everything he was trying to swallow down.

he forced a smile, though it felt tight and brittle. “you always tell me to be quiet.”

tomoya blinked, confused. “because you’re loud.”

hyui laughed once, short and humorless. “you’re louder.”

tomoya grinned, bright and unbothered. “obviously.”

hyui looked at him, really looked, and felt something inside him lurch, and he wondered if tomoya could sense it. he stepped back, needing space, needing air. “i’m going to go to the bathroom.”

tomoya shook his head, stirring the pan. “don’t wander off yet, i need you to taste this.”

hyui walked to the sink, gripping the counter as he tried to steady himself. his reflection in the window looked unsettled, cheeks flushed, eyes too bright, like someone standing on the edge of a confession he wasn’t ready to make.

he didn’t want to argue anymore.
he didn’t want to hide behind noise.
he didn’t want to swallow everything he felt.
he wanted-

“hyui!” tomoya called, voice echoing through the kitchen. “come here. taste this.”

hyui turned to tomoya, who stood there, holding out a spoon, pink hair messy, eyes expectant, lips curved into that familiar half-smirk that always made hyui’s stomach twist. every breath came too fast. he wanted to love tomoya confidently, but tomoya didn’t know that. not yet.

hyui walked back slowly, taking the spoon. their fingers barely brushed, but it sent a spark straight through him, sharp and electric. as usual, tomoya didn’t react. he had no reason to.

hyui tasted the food. “it’s good.”

tomoya beamed, proud and smug. “see? meat first.”

hyui rolled his eyes, but the smile he gave back was softer than usual, almost tender. “you’re impossible.”

tomoya nudged him with his shoulder, casual, familiar, devastating. “and you love it.”

hyui’s breath caught. he did. he loved it. he loved him. but all he said was, “shh.”

tomoya laughed - loud, bright, unrestrained - filling the kitchen with a sound hyui wished he could hold in his hands.

hyui looked at him and knew this was the beginning of the end. the end of hiding. the end of quiet feelings. his heart was impossible to ignore, and soon, tomoya would hear it.
