Work Text:
As I lie awake in bed at night, I sometimes go outside and look at the moon. I get myself up out of bed, put my jacket on, fish a pair of socks out of my drawer, and tip-toe my way to the front door where my shoes are. When I put on my shoes I make sure to be as quiet as possible as to not wake my parents up and have them worry about where I'm going because to be quite frank it would be awkward to explain to them. As I slowly slide out of the house, I make sure to oh so quietly close the door behind me as to not wake anyone up, locking it behind me.
And so as I step outside, out onto the front lawn, I take a breath of the warm summer air and allow my mind the space to relax, to be at ease with the world as the world is with it. There is no screaming, no violence or stress, just yourself, your mind, and the moon above shining with the stars.
I don't walk far from the house, we live out in a rural area, a safe area away from the blinding lights of the city, the chaos of a constructed ecosystem, there is just my house, with my family, and the moon looking down on me.
Lying down in the grass I gaze up at the stars, knowing that despite there small form in the sky above they're in actuality quite large, some may have even already burned out, just the light they once let off oh so brightly hasn't faded away yet. I feel sad for those stars sometimes, because everyone else but themselves can see just how bright they really shined, and that maybe because they never seen it, they stopped shining altogether.
I shift my gaze over, over to the moon that's looking back down at me, it looks so close that I could reach out and touch it, yet alas it remains ever far away, looking down on me and leaving me with the thoughts of what it would be like if I could actually hold the moon.
As the nightsky fades away, I say goodbye to the stars and moon above as I go back inside to my bed; my thoughts still of the moon and wondering that if the stars and moon above were alive, would they be thinking of me too?
