Chapter Text
James was a nerd, but not the smart kind of nerd. James is a kind of guy who takes pride in his ability to name all the Tailed Beasts and their human counterpart in Naruto. As well as boasting about his rank in League of Legends and Valorant. The only time he pays attention in class was during their physics class where he luckily got paired up with the hottest girl on campus, probably the entire world. Her name was Daniela. There's this one time when their physics professor asks the class a question. None of his classmates know the answer but James does, because he happened to watch an episode about it on Dr. Stone. Without meaning to, James blurted out the correct answer and his professor almost shed a tear at how proud he was, that this trouble maker was finally trying and participating in class. The entire class was impressed with him but none of them mattered, the only one that matters was the girl sitting beside him. When he saw Daniela applauding at him, he made it his life's mission to actually try for once and ace this class. So the next time he watched the anime Dr. Stone, he bagan taking notes.
For a whole year, he had a crush on Daniela.
Daniela was beautiful, confident, and somehow managed to look like she had just stepped out of a fashion magazine even during 8 A.M. classes. James will never forget their first conversation. Daniela was asking him for directions. He tried to sound confident.
"Principal's office? Yeah, I go there all the time. It's that way."
James will never forget how sweet her voice sounded when she said "Bye Jim". She even waved at him while walking the opposite direction from where he had pointed.
After weeks of encouragement from his best friend Martin, James finally decided to confess his feelings. Not in person, of course. He wasn't a superhero.
He spent four hours writing the perfect direct message.
"Hey Dani'. This might sound random, but I've had a crush on you for a long time. You're smart, funny, and honestly the reason I don't skip my Monday classes. I know this is sudden, but would you maybe like to get coffee sometime?"
He read it seventeen times.
Then he hit Send.
Immediately, his heart began trying to escape through his ribcage.
Five minutes later, he got a reply.
"Aww, that's the sweetest thing anyone's ever sent me."
James nearly passed out.
SHE REPLIED.
Then another message appeared.
"But I think you got the wrong person."
James blinked.
He checked the profile.
His soul left his body.
The account belonged to Danielle.
Not Daniela.
Danielle.
An entirely different girl.
James prepared to delete every social media account he owned and move to another country.
But before he could, another message arrived.
"I'm Danielle. Biology major. Own three hamsters. My friends call me Dani' too but I'm definitely not Daniela."
"I'm so sorry," James typed. "Wrong person."
Three dots appeared.
"So you're saying that beautiful confession wasn't meant for me?"
"Unfortunately, yes."
"Wow. Rejected by accident. That's a new one."
James wanted the earth to swallow him whole.
But instead of blocking him, Danielle kept talking. And surprisingly, James kept on talking as well.
Over the next hour, she learned everything about him.
His crush on Daniela.
His cute but annoying little sister Wonhee. His undying love for anime and video games.
He even told the story of how he once entered the women's bathroom by accident and had to wait until closing time before he made his escape.
Danielle laughed at every story.
"You're actually pretty funny for a guy who accidentally confessed to the wrong woman."
"Thanks. You're surprisingly nice for someone I accidentally confessed to."
"We're making progress."
James was lying down the couch in the living room while chatting with Danielle. His sister Wonhee walks in and makes her way into the kitchen. On her way back to her room, she glanced at her big brother smiling like a total creep while on his phone. Probably watching some weird tentacle porn or something.
During dinner time, James, Wonhee and their parents sat at the dinner table eating and talking. Asking about each other's day. All of a sudden, Wonhee blurted out.
"James was on the couch watching something weird again."
James snaps his head into his sister's direction.
"What are you talking about?! I'm not watching anything weird! I'm chatting with a friend! And call me Oppa!"
Wonhee retaliated.
"That's impossible. You have no friend."
James grabbed wonhee's meat and ate it in one bite as pay back.
"Hey! That's mine!"
"No more meat for you! You need to lose those chubby cheeks if you want Keonho to notice you!"
The two siblings banter while their parents kept on eating. This was normal in their household, it keeps their meal times lively and entertaining.
The next day, James finally worked up the courage to talk to Daniela in person.
Needless to say, It went terribly.
James had spent the entire night rehearsing.
"Daniela, I like you."
Simple.
Clear.
Impossible to mess up.
The next morning, he spotted Daniela sitting alone on a bench outside the lecture hall.
This was it.
His chance.
He walked over.
His heart pounded.
His palms sweated.
His brain stopped functioning.
"Hey, Jim!" Daniela said with a smile.
"Say it," he told himself.
"Tell her you like her... And that your name is James."
Daniela waited.
James opened his mouth.
Instead of a confession, his panic-ridden brain grabbed the first thing it could find.
"Did you know the human body contains enough fat to make seven bars of soap?"
Daniela blinked.
"...What?"
James felt his soul leave his body.
"Are you telling me I'm fat?"
James tried to save himself but somehow made it worse.
"Technically we're all fat."
Daniela just stared at him.
Then he sneezed right in front of her and then he walked away.
That afternoon, he received a message from Danielle.
"How'd it go?"
"I've achieved a level of embarrassment previously thought impossible."
"Tragic. Coffee tomorrow?"
"Why?"
"Because I want to hear the full story."
James hesitated.
"As friends?"
"Depends. Are you planning to accidentally fall in love with someone else?"
Months later, James and Danielle were dating.
One evening she asked, "So what would have happened if you had sent that message to the right Dani'?"
James thought for a moment.
"Honestly? She probably would've left me on read."
Danielle grinned.
"Good thing you're bad at typing names."
And for the first time in his life, James was grateful for a typo.
The End?
