The campfire crackled and popped as Blu leaned back against the log.
“Tiring day huh.”
Mole nodded. He began to feel his eyes droop. “Yeah, it was wasn't it.”
He picked up the metal that they kept water in and took a swig. The water was nice and cool against his dry lips.
Soon he finished and handed the bottle to Blu. Mole began to turn away so the other man could have privacy but before he could, Blu called out.
“Wait, you dont… have to turn away if you want..” Mole turned to face Blu.
“Are you sure? I-i mean, isn't that something quite private, you haven't shown Lucy yet…” Blu nodded.
“It is private, but I trust you. I trust Lucy too, but she's just so young. I don't want her to think of me any differently.”
Mole shifted closer. “She wouldn't think of you any differently. She really cares about you, and I do too.”
Slowly, Blu unhooked the clasp on his mask. Letting it swing to the side. He brought the bottle up to his lips and took a long swig.
Mole watched the way his blue-green eyes darted around. The way his scars looked against the firelight, the way his lips cupped the flask as he drank.
The first thought that came into his head is how lovely Blu looked.
The other man closed his eyes. “It's nice to feel the air on my face sometimes.”
Mole smiled. “Im sure it would be.” Blu shifted closer. Their faces were so close now that Mole could feel Blu's breath on his cheek.
Slowly, he moved his hand to cup Blu's cheek. Their noses were almost touching at this point. “I-”
Suddenly, a twig snapped. The sound was small but enough to break the spell the two were under. Both Blu and Mole jerked backwards. “Im sorry! I was-” “I didn't mean-” They both grew silent.
“I-im going to go to bed.” said Blu, pushing his mask back on. “Wait!” he grabbed Blu's arm.
“Can we just… forget what happened?” Blu nodded. “Yeah, I guess that's for the best.”
Mole slipped into his sleeping bag. ‘Why was I being so stupid!?’ he thought. ‘Blu trusted me and i blew it!’ He buried his face in his pillow.
Blu slapped himself internally. ‘Why the hell did i do that! He was just being nice and i had to make it weird!’ He turned over, letting his mask dig into his face.
The campfire flickered. It was so small now that it barely shone any light. The wind whipped around it, finally causing it to extinguish. The last remnants of smoke rose into the cool night air as Mole finally slipped into unconsciousness. His racing mind quelled by the silence of the night.
