Chapter 1: Introduction to Murder

Chapter Text

Everyone in my family has killed someone.

Whenever I say that, people think I’m joking. Sure, Alexsandr, your family is a bunch of cold-blooded killers. Your greaseball little brother I believe, but your aggressively boring parents and your sainted doctor sister? Not a chance.

Well, I’m not talking about the Kalluses. I’m talking about my real family, the Yularens. We’re not blood related, and our group of six has four different last names, but when I was injured on Onderon it was Wullf and Estelle who rushed to the medcenter to be with me. When Graf’s speeder broke down on the freeway, it was Andressa who came to the rescue. I raised absolute hell to break Swain out of prison. We’re bonded by choice, by love, and by death.

Because yes, every last Yularen has killed someone.

After the war, I decided to write a book about our family curse called Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, only to find out that someone named Benjamin Stevenson had beaten me to it! I would have been upset if it wasn’t such a great story; I’m a sucker for a good fair play mystery.

So instead of a narrative account of the sometimes-murderous, sometimes-mundane deaths that have plagued our family, I decided to do something a bit different. The following installments are cases where a member of my death-magnet family needed my help to get out of a jam. And I’m taking you along for the ride.

If you’ve read my publisher’s previous work, Almost Perfect Crimes, then you know the drill. If not, allow me to explain. Each case will begin with a story. After the story, there will be a series of questions you need to answer in order to solve the case.

Next up is the evidence section, which contains autopsy reports, witness statements, and any other clues you need to solve the mystery. Don’t worry about needing specialized knowledge to understand the evidence. Like Mr. Stevenson, I’m playing fair.

If you’re still stuck, I can lend a helping hand in the “Analysis of Evidence” section, which goes over the most vital clues. The solutions are provided in the chapter following the story and evidence.

Are you ready to solve a murder? Strap in, because we’re staring off with a bang.
