Later Can't Come Soon Enough

Summary:

Shouta Aizawa is Your Neighbour! As his daily coffee buddy though a window neither of you two have an idea on what your professional lives look like.
While bonding over coffee and cats will there be something more there?

ALSO I CALLED THE READER "RIN" SINCE I DIDN'T WANT TO USE Y/N OR READER

Notes:

Heyyy! I've been a reader forever and everything I write has been kept private until now! I decided to finally post something! here's an old fic I started in either 2021 or 2022! I want to pick it up again (it's probably a prompt that's been done a million times over but whatever)

Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Average Spring Monings

Chapter Text

Chapter 1:

RIN POV:

It was wet outside from the spring season kicking off with constant rain, What better than a cup of coffee to start the morning right? Misha, a light gray chartreux meows at the window noticing the squirrels running on a branch and Milo, the kitten you’ve rescued while on a mission last week, is surprisingly vocal. She was too young to be let free to wander the house so you’ve put her in a spare bedroom now deemed “the cat room”. Both cats meowed for food, clearly not happy that their morning had to start earlier than usual thanks to your new job. There is a window in your kitchen that is directly across from the window in your neighbours kitchen and you two sometimes wave to each other in passing. You get the two cat bowls from the floor and place them on the counter and sigh. You’ve debated in the past if one of those automatic cat feeders were worth it. You’ve spoiled Misha too much over the years and now she expects the expensive wet food and treats galore now, at least Milo didn’t appear to have a preference yet.

You spot your neighbour through the window also filling 2 cat bowls across from you and you two nod to each other in acknowledgement. You two have never had a proper conversation before but in your first week here he did acquaint you with his cat sushi by holding the ragdoll up to the window whenever she came around. They never opened their windows to have a conversation, instead writing in a notebook or a small whiteboard and holding up the message. It wasn’t the most convenient but it worked for them and they chose to not change it.

AIZAWA POV:

These damned cats wake up at the crack of dawn for what? Why do I even keep them around? I go over to the kitchen to make my morning coffee, there's no way I can deal with 2 cats and a group of annoying students. Why do I still have a class? Moreover, why did Nezu assign me to be the teacher of class 2A? Whatever. They’ll wash out eventually. Sushi meows at my feet wondering why I was taking so long and I get her bowl and grabbed a new tin of cat food. A Teacher’s salary isn’t nearly enough for these two cats. At least the HPSC pays well. Oh? There she is again. I wonder if her cat’s are like mine. Demons. What am I thinking? I never hear her yelling at them. They must be angels.

Oh.

She smiled at me.

Right.

Nod back.

What do I even say now? Usually I’d just hold Sushi up. Where is that cat when you need her?

My hand instinctively reaches for the small whiteboard now permanently placed by the window and writes “coffee?” and hold it up so she can see it.

I hold my breath as she reaches for her whiteboard. I noticed she got a whiteboard now instead of using her notebook.

Oh? It’s not a whiteboard? It’s a piece of paper with a plastic page protector on it. She’s resourceful. I should have done that. It would have been cheaper. Whatever, I just stole this whiteboard from the storage closet at UA anyway.

I notice she's done writing now “Sure, a little later” and right below that in brackets she wrote “(these cats will meow my ear off if I don’t feed them in the next 30 seconds)” I watch her walk away from the window with the two bowls of cat food in hand.

Hizashi has been bugging me to make more friends now more than ever. Does she count? I mean I see her regularly right? Given it is through two windows, and it wasn’t exactly voluntary.

I finish plating up the food for my two bastards too and place them by their food station. Both cats come trotting as soon as the food bowls are put down. Sushi and her younger brother Tornado, a tuxedo cat that was the sole reason I had to replace the living room couch so many times seem to materialize out of thin air when they smell food.

RIN POV:

“Time to feed these two suckers” I mutter under my breath as I make my way into the cat room and place bot bowls down. Since Milo is still new I watch her eat. She normally eats slower so I mainly just have to make sure Misha doesn't try to scarf her food down and try to get a double portion from Milo’s bowl. I don’t know what breed Milo is just yet. Maybe Sho will know. Or I can ask the vet at her upcoming appointment.

I watch as the two cats eat without a hitch. Maybe they don’t need supervision? But then again it’ll always be the one time I don’t pay attention to them that something will happen. Better safe than sorry I guess?

Sho must be waiting for me. Good thing they’re almost done. I remember I put my new clothes in the closet in this room since I didn’t want to put my new office outfits in the same place as my casual clothes. I make sure the cats are done before quickly getting changed and picking up their bowls to wash later. I look towards the window and I see Sho there, looks like he just got there, he’s in a black outfit now. I see him wear it every day. Maybe he has a work uniform? I never actually asked him what he does for a living.

AIZAWA POV:

At least I picked a reasonable hero costume while I was a student. I would take a black top and black sweatpants any-day. I watched Hizashi attempt to put on his all leather hero costume the other day after we had just finished working out and boy was it a show.

Oh. She's back. Looks like she’s changed too.

She's in a formal outfit. It suits her. I remember she was telling me that she landed an entry level assistant position now in a hero agency.

I pick up the whiteboard and write a simple “Are the cats okay now?” She smiles after reading the message and gives me a nod.

I notice her pick up her coffee mug and I follow, doing the same. We both raise our glasses like we were toasting to something other than just the start of the day and going to their mundane jobs.

Sushi jumps up onto the counter and purrs while rubbing against my arm. She always tries her hardest to get more food out of me even though I've just fed her. The vet recommended I put her on a diet since it would be more difficult if Sushi becomes classified overweight instead of just chubby. She’s my oldest cat. I’ve had her since I was in year 2 of UA. She was the cat that I tried raising with my friends back then. This cat was the only reason the 4 of us even spoke in the first place.

I look back to the window and I see her holding up her diy whiteboard with the message “I see Sushi Is doing great”
Yeah. This is how it’s supposed to be. Coffee. Minimal small talk. Cats. and someone who doesn't annoy me.

It’s 7:15 now. I notice she always leaves her house at 7:30. I don’t leave until 7:45 or more realistically 7:50 since we live quite close to UA.

I notice that I unconsciously ended up finishing up my cup of coffee and I look over to her window and I see her washing her cup. I guess it’s time to start the day.
