Chapter 1: Circus

Chapter Text

“Len! It’s time for breakfast!” He recalled a familiar cheerful voice from his mother, interrupting him from nearly sinking in his own thoughts.

Len Kagamine reluctantly dragged himself down the stairs from his tranquil room, hair messy and clothes sagging. As usual, he spotted his food lying on the kitchen table, sat down on the chair in front of it and just blankly stared at it, playing with his fork and pushing his food around.

"Len, you've been doing that for 5 minutes straight, are you gonna eat it or should we just leave it as leftovers?" His twin sister, Rin Kagamine, commented disappointedly. The other next to her, currently dozing out, recollected his thoughts and lazily muttered out a reply.

“Oh…Uh, you or the neighbors could have it instead…?” He suggested as he nervously smiled. The girl sitting beside him sighed faintly, but enough for him to hear. “Len, you haven’t been eating much these days, are you sure you’re alright?” His mother added in worryingly.

“Mhm! I’m perfectly fine, don’t worry about me!” He responded reassuringly, knowing full well that he was lying just so his mom wasn’t concerned about him. “Well…if you insist.” She replied.

Some minutes later, Len made his way up to his room, brushed his teeth and tangled hair, put on deodorant, washed his face and got dressed.

He was wearing brownish-beige cargo pants, a gray t-shirt with a design of a guitar that he hid underneath a soft, cozy black hoodie and he had his hair up in a small ponytail, as he normally would.

As Len aimlessly wandered around the serene sidewalk, he noticed a lonely poster on the rough pavement that somehow caught his eye.

‘CIRCUS TICKETS OFFICIALLY 50% CHEAPER! WATCH THE SHOW ON MAY 29TH, 11:30AM!’

Continuously reading with the poster now in his hand, he realized that it was 11:05AM, the circus was only around 15 minutes away, and he could afford going with his pocket money.

So being the curious, gleeful person he was, he strode all the way to said circus and stopped by the ticket stall… Only to tragically be three dollars short.

Much to his surprise, one of the circus performers approached the scene and offered to pay the money needed. “Oh, c’mon now… It’s only three bucks, let him off!” The mysterious boy protested with a pout, “Fine then, if not, then i might as well pay the rest myself!” He rolled his eyes and sighed a little too dramatically.

He had crimson red hair that slightly reached his shoulders with small patterns of black dye on it, his skin was pale with burn scars on the left side of his face, his eye on that same side covered with an eyepatch while the other was a deep shade of red that anyone could stare at all day and still be lured in. Red bandage on his nose and a little black cross painted on his face right next to soft lips that Len was trying not to gaze at. Moving on to his outfit, it was one of the most stylish outfits the blonde thought he’d ever seen. He had a top hat on the side of his head, making him stand out from the crowd. A thick ruff collar on his neck, sided with a corset filled with patterns, frills, and designs all around it. Splotches of red, black, white and yellow (never gone unnoticed) creating an exquisite contrast between the colors. A dazzling bowtie, glimmering and shining even a mile away, paired with hanging decorations with stars and cards on the skirt. Arms covered with frilled cuffs, as well as red and white bandages below his elbows.

Whilst the redhead enthusiastically sauntered away, he shortly reversed his tracks and decided to invite the other boy to go backstage. “Psst… Hey you, guess what, you’re free to go backstage after the performance!” An alluring voice whispered to him.

He was so love stricken that he almost forgot to answer, “O-Oh- Thank-thanks a lot, genuinely.”

“No need to thank me!” He remarked as he continued to skip along. The blue eyed boy could’ve sworn there were hearts in his eyes and that he forgot to keep on breathing for a second, his face nearly the same color as the latter’s hair and his heart trying to catch a break from pounding.

When Len approached the actual circus, he caught a glimpse of all the gear, the seats patiently waiting to be used, and the variety of vivid colors around the tent.

He struggled to find his seat, occasionally accidentally knocking into people and apologizing while earning glares.

Once he eventually found somewhere to sit, the show had begun. Main lights going off, he watched the acrobats; entertainers and magicians in amazement, wondering how they manage to do all this.

After a while, the next performance took place, and he was mildly astonished that it was in-fact the boy from earlier.

Completely driven by love, he was probably more focused on the performer himself rather than the actual performance.

Meanwhile it went on, hanging on ropes and hoops, the boy on stage got closer to Len’s seat, then took the opportunity and winked at him.

Winked at Len.

He really hoped he wasn’t dreaming, because it sure felt like he was. Now a majority of the audience was peering at him and murmuring, in response he attempted to hide his flushed face in his hands. Upon notice of this, the performer smugly allowed himself to smirk.

Afterwards his act, retreating to backstage, the boy with a top hat glanced specifically towards Len, grinning at him. All of this in one day, and he didn’t even have a clue what his name was…
