A Fairytale of Braun and Soleum
Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a man named Braun.
Ever since he was born, Braun had known he was different. The reason was simple: he remembered his past life.
A past life as a great and magnificent host of heartwarming… or, ahem, more truthfully, life-ruining TV shows.
Those who entered his show usually regretted their decision almost immediately. What began with a lighthearted spirit soon twisted into a nightmare of terror the moment they realized that the great Host was perfectly willing to burn people alive for even the smallest mistake.
Yes, Braun had not always been human. In his previous life, he had been a ghost-story monster — one far more interested in making the story interesting and entertaining than in preserving anyone’s life.
And when those memories came to human-Braun one night, they brought something overwhelmingly sweet with them. Not just the memories themselves, but the feelings. They were intoxicating, irresistible, and impossible to ignore.
Braun, however, did not resist.
He welcomed the change gladly, as if something that had been suffocating him for years had finally loosened its grip. The crushing boredom left him. Life suddenly became vivid and bright, especially once his perspective on the value of human life shifted.
From then on, Braun did only what he wanted, exactly how he wanted. Other people meant nothing to him. They were dull, insignificant creatures who didn’t deserve even a second of his attention.
That was how Braun thought… until one day.
~ ~ ~
Drip. Drip. Drip.
The rain, which had started so suddenly and lightly a few days ago, had now turned into a heavy downpour. Grey clouds huddled together so tightly that it almost felt as if the sky itself had been cursed.
Such weather, believe it or not, didn’t bother Braun.
Even if there had been a tornado outside, he would have been far more interested in writing down the new scenarios that kept popping into his head with almost eerie speed. His hand was nearly numb from writing, but he didn’t care.
He had to get everything down.
He still had no idea how he was going to film any of it. The technological level of this world was, frankly… disappointing.
They didn’t even have electric lamps.
For Braun, who was used to the benefits of modern technology, that should have been a complete disaster.
Fortunately, this world had something else to offer.
Magic.
It was nothing like what he had known in his own world. This indefinable power had been studied and refined to the smallest detail – so it was no surprise that it soon became part of everyday life. People used it to light their homes, heal their wounds, and lighten their labor.
And humans… were not the only creatures living in this world. There were other, stranger beings too — monsters, as people called them. Frightening enough to make anyone scream, but not impossible to believe in.
There were even guards who watched over cities and villages, protecting ordinary folk from whatever lurked in the darkness beyond the walls.
To Braun, however, the idea of letting a few monsters in and watching the people panic sounded far more entertaining.
But that was not today’s story.
On that heavily rainy night, a few weak knocks at the door interrupted the thoughts Braun had been so carefully weaving.
Naturally, this made him very unhappy.
Ignore
He tried to ignore them and chase after the idea before it slipped away. But whoever stood behind his door was annoyingly determined to get his attention.
The knocks came again.
Now properly irritated, Braun stood up and crossed the room to the door. He grabbed the doorknob and pulled it open.
A gust of cold wind swept inside, immediately filling him with the urge to slam the door shut again. Braun pushed the feeling aside, deciding he would make himself a cup of hot tea after dealing with… whatever this dark-cloaked figure was.
“What?” he asked, making his voice sound even more annoyed than he actually felt.
The hood shifted.
A small, dry, wrinkled face appeared beneath it — so ancient that it seemed like a miracle she was still standing at all. Her eyes were milky white, clouded over as if she were… blind?
“My greetings to this house…” the old woman said softly. “Forgive such a sudden request, but might you, by any chance, have a spare place where this old lady could stay for the night?”
Let her in
The old lady’s words, along with her pitiful appearance, made Braun feel something strange inside.
Almost like…
Pity?
The feeling was so unfamiliar that Braun froze for a few seconds.
He had never felt anything like it before.
Never.
It was almost as if someone was trying to… influence him?
…
Was this the old lady’s doing? Because really, who else would dare attempt such an outrageously suicidal act?
Close the door in her face
The door slammed shut right in front of the old woman’s nose, cutting her off mid-sentence.
For a moment, there was only the sound of rain.
Then her milky eyes darkened, and her lips began to tremble.
“What a dark heart beats within this human body. What a handsome face adorns this human head. You do not deserve it. So I have decided your fate.”
MAY THIS FACE VANISH FROM THE WORLD’S SIGHT UNTIL A HEART BRAVE ENOUGH TO ACCEPT THE CURSED ONE’S LOVE APPEARS!
Oh…
The old woman’s words rang so loudly that they were still echoing inside Braun when a strange palette of colors suddenly blinded him.
One second, the world around him was perfectly ordinary. The next, everything exploded into such bizarre hues that he had to brace himself against the doorframe to keep from falling.
Shock flooded through him.
The feeling was familiar and yet utterly foreign. His hands flew to his head, and–
…
Something square and rough sat beneath his fingers instead.
Oh.
What?
Was he… cursed?
In place of his handsome head, a wooden box with a black smile now rested on his shoulders.
Braun immediately tried to rush to the table to write the curse down, but he had to stop almost at once. His sense of space was completely thrown off, and he nearly fell flat on the floor.
He groaned… and the box gave a thin, hollow sound.
The witch’s words kept repeating in his mind.
“MAY THIS FACE VANISH FROM THE WORLD’S SIGHT UNTIL A HEART BRAVE ENOUGH TO ACCEPT THE CURSED ONE’S LOVE APPEARS!”
Love? Who even needed love in this day and age?
Braun was perfectly happy on his own. He didn’t need anyone around. The whole thing sounded fake-sweet, sentimental, and deeply annoying.
The witch’s words were, in short, complete bullshit.
He tried to take another step forward.
And nearly fell again.
…
He just needed time to adjust.
Braun firmly decided that he had absolutely no intention of lifting the curse.
Why should he? He could live perfectly well on his own.
…
That's how Braun thought. Unfortunately… other people were not nearly as comfortable with his new appearance. The very same people who had once looked at Braun with adoration now screamed at the sight of him and fled into their houses.
Some even called the guards.
How rude.
And so, with no audience left to appreciate him, Braun was forced to leave the place he had once called home.
He became a wandering traveler, moving from town to town, kingdom to kingdom, searching for… absolutely nothing in particular.
But if, somewhere along the way, he happened to find someone worthy of his love… well, that would be a win-win.
Let her in
The overwhelming urge to let the poor old woman in almost pressed Braun to the ground. His body wouldn’t move at all.
…
Braun… didn’t like it.
At.
All.
