Work Text:
Philip glanced around the large ballroom, conversations and music buzzing around him. He caught sight of a young woman a few feet away and did a quick double take. She was talking to a group of people, one very recognizable figure among them; though he couldn’t figure out who. Philip was in awe- The girl was truly beautiful. He swallowed, shifting slightly in his place.
“You’re staring, Phil," snickered a voice beside him. Philip slightly jumped, glancing at his sister.
“She won’t notice, she’s too busy talking.” He said.
“That doesn't give you the right to stare, Philip Hamilton!” Angie teased. Philip nodded.
“I guess that is true.” He sighed.
“Who is she?”
“That is Theodosia Burr. Smart girl. Very loved.” Angie said, her voice full of joy. She was clearly just happy to be there.
Philip slightly stilled at her words.
“Burr, you say?” He said, glancing at his sister. She nodded.
“So, I suppose that the gentleman next to her is..” He slowly trailed off as the said gentleman looked their way. Him and Philip locked eyes for a moment, and Philip froze for a second before quickly blinking and looking away. He glanced back to see him whispering something into Theodosia’s ear. It was at this time Philip had wished he knew how to lip read.
“Aaron Burr.” Angie clicked her tongue.
“You’ve been caught. Good luck.” She lightly snickered at the end of her sentence before nudging her brother. Philip shot her a look before turning to get one last glance at Theodosia. He froze in horror as he realized she wasn’t there, and neither was her father.
“He’s gone,” Philip was beginning to regret his life choices.
“What do you mean he’s gone?”
“Well if it isn't Philip and Angelica Hamilton,”
Philip nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard the voice.
He swallowed, paused for a moment, then slowly turned to see Aaron Burr standing behind him, arms neatly tucked behind his break, a sort-of entertained sick grin plastered on his face. Philip wished he could sink into the ground when he noticed Theodosia standing awkwardly beside him.
“Aaron Burr.” Philip greeted him, hand outstretched, then paused for a moment. “It's been.. a while.” He said, taking his hand back awkwardly when Burr didn't shake it. Philip's eyes glanced at Theodosia and he nodded hello.
“You must be Theodosia?” He asked, adjusting his cravat. Theodosia nodded, smiling lightly at him.
“Pleasure to meet you, Philip.” She said, slightly adjusting her dress.
“And you.” Philip replied, smiling softly at her. He looked back at Burr, his expression changing.
“Can I help you, sir?” He asked, tilting his head. Burr lightly smiled, though it seemed fake to Philip, laced with a trace of mockery.
“Actually, yes, young boy, you can. I would like to know where your father is, in fact. Him and I are due for a few words tonight–”
“He’s behind you, sir.” Philip hid a light smirk. Burr’s smile faltered as he turned.
“Christ, when did you get there?” He asked, tapping his foot.
“A few seconds ago. Is there a reason you’re talking to my children, Mr. Burr, sir?” Alexander asked, jaw clenched. He glanced past Burr to Philip for a mere second.
“Ah, no, sir, ‘twas simply just making small talk.” Burr answered. Alexander didn't buy it, his brow furrowing.
“Shall we take this.. elsewhere?” Burr recommended, doing this weird thing with his hands. Alexander glanced at Angelica, then to Philip, before nodding. “Alright. Take care of your sister, pip, I'll be back.” He said before turning and leading Burr someplace else. Philip swallowed, watching them as they trailed into the large crowd and out of eyesight, then turned to Theodosia, the silence between them deafening.
“‘Tis a nice day out, isn't it?” He said, clicking his tongue.
“It's raining, Philip.”
Philip paused for a moment, then tapped his foot.
“Is it really? Oh, that's weird, I uh.. never noticed. No. Not at all.” He rubbed the back of his neck, slightly grimacing.
Theodosia chuckled.
"Mhm, i can tell," She smiled, playing with the cuff of her sleeve.
