Baseline

Summary:

Kenma has to recalibrate how he perceive the world. It’s only natural, the world was not that much, before Kuroo.

Work Text:

[Baseline]

It is Kenma’s natural state to dislike his surroundings.

According to his mother, as an infant he detests formula, barely tolerates plain congee. He hates being held for too long, would frown if being ignored.

The threshold for Kenma to like, or even be interested in, things was held very high, until Kuroo came along.

Kenma doesn’t know how Kuroo does it, but colors seem to follow him, leaking out from nowhere and making real life look like video games.

Highly saturated.

Kenma suspects it has something to do with Kuroo’s brilliant, brilliant golden eyes. He can’t really tell.

The best part was that, like a video game, Kuroo would shut it down the moment he detected the slightest crease between Kenma’s eyebrows.

It was like putting on 3D glasses and having them taken off the moment your eyes sting without having to lift your hand.

Kenma has to recalibrate how he perceive the world. It’s only natural, the world was not that much, before Kuroo.

If you track down the origin of Kenma’s love, you find Kuroo.

Kuroo is the starting point, the switch, and a map laid out, covered in beautiful paint.

Maybe it’s because he suffered from a great loss at a young age, Kuroo doesn’t know how to moderate the force of his love.

His love for his family, however incomplete it turned out to be, his love towards science, volleyball and his love for his teammate.

It often rendered Kuroo exhausted and feeling drained for how much he pulled out.

Kenma toned it down.

It’s like putting on a set of puffy headphones. It’s like being invited in a cottage under a heaving storm.

Kenma let Kuroo love him like drizzling rain at early spring. Quiet, lingering, and everywhere.
