Work Text:

"You're an absolute menace," Severus muttered, fingers hovering over the jigsaw spread across their coffee table. The edges were done. Sky, trees, an almost complete lake but the center gaped like a missing tooth.

Across the room, Sirius leaned against the kitchen counter, grinning around the rim of his mug. "Menace implies intent. I'm just standing here."

Severus narrowed his eyes. "You're holding the last piece hostage."

Sirius took a leisurely sip, then set the mug down with deliberate slowness. "Am I?" He patted his pockets, before shrugging. "Nope. Must've misplaced it."

Severus exhaled through his nose. "You're going to make me get up, aren't you?" He didn't move from his spot on the floor, knees tucked under him, fingers drumming the unfinished edge of the puzzle.

Sirius grin widened. He hooked a thumb into the waistband of his sweatpants and tugged slightly, just enough for Severus to catch a glimpse of cardboard corner peeking out. "Might be incentive in here. Hard to say."

With exaggerated effort, Severus pushed himself upright, rolling his shoulders as if preparing for battle. He crossed the living room in slow, deliberate steps.

When he was close enough to smell Sirius bergamot shampoo, Severus stopped. "You realise this is childish," he said, reaching for Sirius waistband.

Sirius sidestepped with a laugh, catching Severus’ wrist mid-reach. “Childish? You’re the one who threatened to glue my socks together when I mixed up your filing system.” His thumb brushed the inside of Severus’ pulse point, warm and familiar.

Severus didn’t dignify that with a response. Instead, he twisted his hand free and lunged, fingers diving for Sirius waistband again, only for Sirius to pivot and use the counter to block him.

The puzzle piece crinkled.

“You’re going to crease it,” Severus hissed, though the corner of his mouth twitched.

“Dramatic,” Sirius said, catching Severus by the hips and pulling him flush. “It’s cardboard. It’ll survive.”

Severus huffed, but his hands settled on Sirius shoulders, fingers threading into the fabric of his shirt. “You’re a nuisance.”

Sirius grinned, all teeth, and rocked forward just enough to make Severus step back, except there was nowhere to go.

"You love it," he murmured, ducking his head to nip at Severus' jaw. His free hand slipped lower, fingertips skating along the waistband of Severus' trousers. "Admit it. You live for my drama..."

The rest was muffled against Severus' palm as he shoved Sirius back with a well-practiced twist of his wrist. "I live for the day you develop a sense of decorum," he deadpanned, but the effect was ruined by the way his breath hitched when Sirius licked a stripe across his palm.

"Decor...fuck, you're hilarious." Sirius caught his wrist again, this time to press a kiss to the racing pulse there.

His other hand finally dug into his own sweatpants, emerging with the slightly bent corner of the puzzle piece pinched between two fingers. "Say please."

Severus made a sound halfway between a scoff and a sigh. A noise Sirius had catalogued years ago as I’m pretending this isn’t working but you win, you bastard.

The thing was, Severus had been looking forward to finishing it. It was one of those obscenely difficult ones, a thousand pieces of nearly identical autumn foliage they’d bought on a whim during a weekend trip to some overpriced boutique.

“Please,” Severus said flatly.

Sirius’ grin softened at the edges, the way it always did when Severus played along. He leaned in, close enough that Severus could count the flecks of gold in his stupid, lovely eyes. “See? Was that so...”

Severus didn’t let him finish. He snatched the puzzle piece from Sirius' fingers with a precision honed by years of snatching confiscated contraband from students. Only to freeze when Sirius' hand closed over his, trapping them both in the space between their chests. The cardboard corner dug into Severus' palm, sharp enough to sting.

"Cheater," Sirius murmured, but his voice had gone low, rough at the edges like worn parchment. His thumb swept over Severus' knuckles, slow and deliberate.

The puzzle piece was forgotten between their palms, bent beyond repair now, but Severus found he no longer cared.

Then, because Sirius was incapable of letting a moment linger without ruining it, he grinned and said, "You know, if you wanted to get your hands down my pants, you could've just asked."

Severus rolled his eyes so hard it nearly hurt, but his fingers didn't pull away from Sirius' grip. “If I wanted that,” he murmured, stepping close enough that their chests brushed, “I wouldn’t waste time with puzzles.”

The kiss wasn’t gentle. It was teeth and pent-up frustration. Sirius made a noise against his mouth, equal parts surprise and triumph, hands sliding around Severus’ waist to haul him closer still.

The puzzle piece fluttered to the floor, forgotten, as Severus finally dug his fingers beneath the waistband of Sirius’ sweatpants.

“Not fair,” Sirius gasped between kisses, though he arched into the touch like a man starved. “Using...ah...distraction tactics.”

Severus hummed, as he walked Sirius backward until the counter dug into his thighs. “Says the man who hid,” a nip to Sirius’ lower lip “the last piece,” fingers hooking into the waistband of his briefs “in his pants.” Sirius moaned, sharp and sudden, when Severus’ thumb brushed over him. The sound went straight to Severus’ gut, hot and insistent.

Sirius’ hands fumbled at Severus’ belt, fingers clumsy with want. “You’re,” a gasp as Severus twisted his wrist just so “fucking lethal.”

Severus grinned against Sirius’ mouth, all teeth. “You love it.”

They stumbled toward the couch, shedding clothes like afterthoughts. The half-finished puzzle scattered beneath them as Sirius pulled Severus down onto the cushions, knees bracketing his hips. Severus paused just long enough to glare at the mess. “I were so close to finishing.”

Sirius rolled his eyes and yanked him down by the collar. “We are so close to something better.”

Later, when the sweat had cooled and the cushions were hopelessly rumpled, Severus traced idle circles over Sirius’ bare hipbone. The puzzle lay in ruins around them, pieces kicked under the coffee table in their haste. Sirius’ breath was warm against his collarbone, slow and even.

“You creased it,” Severus murmured, nodding toward the lone puzzle piece still clutched in Sirius’ slack fingers. It was bent at a sharp angle now, the autumn foliage warped beyond recognition.

“Good.” Sirius rolled onto his side, propping his head on one hand. His hair was a disaster, curls flattened on one side from where Severus had gripped them. “Means we’ll have to start over.” His grin was slow, wicked. “Maybe buy one with fewer trees this time.”

Severus huffed, but his fingers didn’t stop their idle tracing up the ladder of Sirius’ ribs, over the familiar scar near his hip. “You’d get bored.”

“Not if you keep,” Sirius cut himself off with a sharp inhale as Severus’ thumb brushed a particular spot low on his stomach. His voice dropped to a rasp. “Fuck. Do that again.”

Severus obliged, deliberately slow, watching the way Sirius’ pupils blew wide. “Like this?”

Sirius made a noise halfway between a laugh and a groan, catching Severus’ wrist. “You’re a bastard.” He dragged Severus’ hand lower anyway, until his fingers skimmed the thatch of coarse hair below his navel. “But yeah. Exactly like that.”

The kiss that followed was messy. He didn’t let go of Severus’ wrist, guiding his fingers lower still. Severus let him, enjoying the way Sirius’ breath hitched when his fingertips finally grazed him.

“Still think,” Sirius’ voice cracked as Severus curled his fingers, “I’m childish?”

Severus nipped at his lower lip. “Positively infantile.”

Sirius groaned, hips jerking into Severus’ touch. “Then stop...ah...indulging me.”

Severus didn’t stop. He mapped Sirius’ body like he was reconstructing a crime scene.

Methodical, thorough, cataloging each hitch of breath, each twitch of muscle beneath sweat-slick in the way Sirius’ thighs trembled when he scraped his nails just so. “Indulging you,” Severus murmured against the hinge of Sirius’ jaw, “is a full-time occupation.”

Sirius laughed, breathless, until it dissolved into a gasp as Severus twisted his wrist. The coffee table rattled when Sirius kicked it. Severus should have cared but right now, he was more interested in the way Sirius’ back arched off the couch cushions, the way his fingers tangled in Severus’ hair like he was trying to anchor himself to something solid.

“You’re,” Sirius’ voice broke as Severus bit down on his collarbone, “such a fucking hypocrite.” His hips stuttered, chasing the rhythm of Severus’ hand. “All that dignity, and here you are...”

Severus cut him off with a kiss, swallowing the rest of the sentence.

Sirius moaned into his mouth, fingers tightening in his hair hard enough to sting. Severus reveled in it all. The pain, the pleasure, the way Sirius fell apart beneath him like a poorly constructed spell.

When Sirius came, it was with Severus’ name on his lips.
