Work Text:
She can’t sleep. There’s something bothering her, she can’t pinpoint exactly what it is, all she knows is that she can’t sleep.
Mulder, on the other hand, is peacefully sleeping next to her, the man who is an insomniac, looks so comfortable right now. He has his arm draped around her, his face near the crook of her neck, so close that she can feel the puffs of his breaths from his nose. This position always makes her feel so safe, so comfortable, so warm, that she never has trouble sleeping. But now? She needs to get out of the room and find what’s been making her unable to sleep.
She quietly slips from under Mulder’s arm, hoping that it won’t wake him. Once she realizes that he’s still asleep, she puts on her pajama slippers and leaves their bedroom.
The house is dark, and somewhat cold. She goes downstairs to the kitchen, and that is when she sees it. There’s something outside, near the bushes. Dana doesn’t know what to do, she’s torn between going upstairs and telling Mulder or going outside and finding out herself.
She opens the door before she even tries to think. She gets out wishing that she took her coat too, it’s very windy outside. She steps on the porch and walks to the bushes where she could see that they were moving but not because of the wind.
Please, please let it be an animal.
“Who 's there?” Dana calls out, and that’s when she thinks that she’s dreaming.
A little boy, no younger than six years old, walks out of the bushes, he’s wearing a green winter jacket, dark pants, dark green boots and a blue beanie. His nose is red, probably he’s sick from the cold, and his eyes- His eyes.
She knows those eyes, they have been in her dreams( and nightmares too) for the past six years. She can’t believe it, it’s him! It 's William.
It cannot possibly be him! the rational part of her brain chimes in, surely the son she gave up for adoption almost seven years ago cannot be suddenly back here into her-their life out of nowhere.
“Are you Dana?” The boy asks, he looks so exhausted and he’s definitely going to catch a cold.
“Um-Yeah, my name’s Dana, Dana Scully.” She answers him, and it’s immediately surprised that the boy goes and hugs her, looking very relieved that she is in fact who he is looking for.
“I knew I would find you.” The boy mumbles against her robe, still holding her, She touches his soft hair, and ushers him to the house.
“What is your name?” Dana asks him while entering the house, hoping that Mulder is awake.
“William, wait I thought you know who I am?” The boy-William turns around with a skeptical look, her skeptical look.
“Oh my god!” Dana falls to her knees, unable to breathe. William is here. Their son has come back to them.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare-“ William is unable to finish when Dana grabs him and hugs him, her baby, her beautiful boy.
“I never thought I would see you again” she sobs and kisses his head, and when she looks up she sees Mulder, his shocked face confirms the fact that she’s not dreaming, and thank God for that.
