Work Text:
“I noticed you’ve been hanging out with the new girl.”
Azula looked up from her notebook. “Finished with your equations already?”
“I can work and talk,” Ty Lee shot back.
Since they’d begun their fake relationship, the two had been meeting up for ‘study dates’ at a local cafe. Both of them were getting better grades as a result — Ty Lee because she had a brilliant tutor to help her, and Azula because she had a stronger incentive to do her schoolwork.
“So, the new girl. What’s her name again? Zelda?”
“Zirin,” Azula corrected. “She’s pretty cool. She feels like an outsider too, so we have that in common. We’re friends, I guess.”
“That’s nice.”
“Don’t say that like you feel bad for me.”
Ty Lee’s brow furrowed, like she was thinking really hard about something.
“Need a hand?” Azula offered.
Ty Lee shook her head. “No, it’s just… Do you wanna break up?”
Azula cocked an eyebrow. “We can’t break up. We’re not really dating.”
Despite her words, the gold-eyed girl felt a knot form in the pit of her stomach.
“I know, but we can, like, fake break up?”
“Why would we do that?” Azula frowned. “Do you have your eye on somebody?” A pang of jealousy struck her chest.
“What?” Ty Lee looked alarmed. “Why would you — That’s not why! I just thought… You and Zirin have been spending a lot of time together, and I wouldn’t want to get in your way —”
“You think I’m interested in Zirin?”
The cheerleader shrugged. “Are you?”
Azula shook her head. “She’s cool and all, but she’s not my type.”
“Oh. Then there’s no problem, then.”
“Nope.”
“Cool.”
The next several minutes passed in silence, both girls unwilling to acknowledge the relief they felt.
Eventually, Ty Lee spoke up. “I’m sorry for assuming about you and Zirin.”
“Whatever,” Azula muttered. A smirk came to her face. “If you want to spend more time with me, you can just tell me.”
Ty Lee looked up at her, bemused. “I don’t follow.”
“You just seemed very concerned about my relationship with Zirin,” the dark-haired girl teased. “I’m just saying, jealousy doesn’t suit you.”
“Jealousy?” Ty Lee scoffed. “As if! Geez, I give you some personal attention and you get a big head.”
“Don’t worry,” Azula chuckled. “I’m a one-woman girl.”
