Lloyd snickered as he continued to watch the conversation unfold, phone hidden under the library table. Kai's brazen disregard for the others' input after rallying them to hear their opinions sparked heightened activity in the chat, the rest of his friends (minus Pixal) sending furious messages questioning why he asked in the first place.
Before he could get in on the action, Morro reached over and flicked his forehead. "Pay attention, kid."
"Sorry, sorry," Lloyd mumbled, rubbing his head while he placed his phone on the table. "Just some really dumb shit going on."
"Exactly what I'd expect from the clowns you hang out with," he grumbled in response.
"Hey! Your dad's how we all met!"
"And my dad's the biggest clown of them all," his cousin swiftly replied, doubling down on his somewhat light-hearted slander. "Now, focus."
Lloyd sighed as he turned his attention back to the book sprawled out in front of him. He soon returned to his antsy, absentminded habits; tapping his pencil on the pages, kicking his leg. The silence wasn't doing him any favours either, thoughts looping endlessly in his mind, trying to fill the void of sound. God, he hated studying.

The freshman's head perked up at the sound of his phone buzzing, earning a glare from his cousin.
"Pay attention, kid," he scolded, though there was no real harshness to his voice. "Do you ever put your phone on silent?"
"I don't have to usually. I mean—the only thing I have to silence is the group chat, I don't get a ton of notifications otherwise."

"Well, put it on silent. It's doing nothing but distracting us."
Lloyd sighed as he grabbed his phone, and—surely he could sneak a peak without Morro noticing? Curiosity got the better of him as he quickly unlocked his phone, swapping to his private messages to see what exactly his friends wanted from him.

"Fuck, sorry!" He made a show of silencing his phone, dropping it on the table with a dull thud after. "Look, it's silenced! No more distractions."
Morro tsked, shaking his head slightly. "What are they even talking about?"
Lloyd paused, contemplating coming clean. He knew his cousin and friends weren't exactly in great standing, and confessing they were talking about him created the feeling that maybe this wouldn't go too well.
Morro's gaze narrowed on him. "Lloyd…"
The freshman turned away, heat rising into his cheeks. "Uh—well, they're talking about…you?"
Thankfully, his expression appeared unfazed by the confession. "What about me?"
"They're, uh, trying to guess what music you listen to, and it's…kinda gotten heated."
Lloyd braced himself for the mood to drop, and to hear a "Why the fuck do they even care about that? That's weird as fuck", and was shocked when instead he heard snickering. He turned to face his cousin, finding the firmness once present in his body had melted away to reveal a relaxed posture.
"What're the guesses," he asked, a cheeky smile on his face.
Well this is one way to get out of studying, the freshman thought to himself. "They all have different answers. Nya said goth, Zane said emo, and they both had proof for it. Jay said like, screamo or metal, Cole said breakcore, and Kai guessed those bullshit two minute electronic TikTok songs."
Morro laughed, clearly entertained by the whole debacle. "Oh, that's cute. Why are they bothering you about it?"
"Cause we're cousins," Lloyd pointed out, a "duh" quality to his tone. "And Zane knows we're studying together, so I'm sure he told the others."
His cousin stole a glance at the scattered books and notebooks on the table in front of them, humming before returning his cousin's gaze. "Give me the phone."
"What?"
"They want help settling the matter? They can get confirmation straight from the source."
Lloyd grinned as he handed his phone over. "Alright then."
