Spending new years in a completely different country wasn't exactly on Moonzy's plan at the start of last year. Neither were the warm arms enveloping them in a comforting hug, or the chatter of familiar voices around them.
Everyone has been really lovely to them from the second they arrived there. Even though they could feel some kind of tension forming between some of their friends, Moonzy just decided to ignore it. Whatever happens, happens. And if it ends badly… Well, they have everything they could ever ask for.
A partner that loves them unconditionally. Moonzy has had partners in the past, of course they have, but no one has ever made them like this.
Loving Ranboo is as easy as breathing.
They started flirting with them as a joke, or so they thought. There were some feelings there, ones Moonzy has squashed down and willinged themes to forget, back when they were younger.
But then everyone suddenly had their eyes on Ranboo. Everything changed so fast, everyone got so busy dealing with this newfound fame that, whatever their relationship was, it got swiped by their now more important responsibilities.
Moonzy can't really blame Ranboo for that, they got involved with others too. And they were still friends! Just not as close as before but that's completely fine, life happens.
That didn't stop Moonzy's heart from hurting when they saw how Ranboo acted around their probably new boyfriend. And they hated that they reacted that way. Why, why even? They were never anything more than friends, those feelings were never that serious in the first place. They need to move on.
And so time passed.
They didn't move on, no matter how much they lied to themselves. The second Moonzy made eye contact with Ranboo in the beach of Brighton all their blood rushed to their face. Beautiful blue eyes, a blazing smile covered by their mask and long opened arms waiting for them to jump right in.
If they were ever mad about them losing contact, all feelings of anger would have evaporated the second Moonzy's nose made contact with the soft material of their hoodie. But those feelings never existed. Just one of regret, that they desperately tried to put under lock and key. Of regret that they never opened up about how they used to feel. About how they still feel deep down.
Swimming, playing with the sand, spending time with friends, nothing compared to how good Ranboo being by their side made their soul feel.
But they didn't say anything again, and so time passed.
Aimsey’s subathon was a blessing in disguise, they looked forward to having a good time on stream as always, but never expected what would bring to their life.
Ranboo was sweet, lovely and kind, as they always are with them. Spending so much time with them, even with so many people watching, brightened their day in ways Moonzy never expected.
And so they got bold, and flirted, so much that there's no way the people watching never noticed. But that was fine. How could they care when they reciprocated in some way? When they started stuttering and got all nervous? Cute, so cute. Moonzy couldn't get enough of it.
Time passed, but their regular calls started. And if sweet promises were whispered into their mics late at night, that was between them and the moon hanging in the sky.
Twitchcon had been good, the best to date even. Michaela had been lovely, as always. And they would never in a million years tell her to go away so they can have some time alone. And so they didn't, but it was fine, their friendship is important too.
It had been also fine because Ranboo seemed even more shy in person. Leaving a few feet between them in pictures, and only getting close when Moonzy did first. They were lucky, Moonzy thought, that they found that painfully endearing instead of annoying.
Whatever Ranboo did never made them feel unwanted, they made it up to them after all.
Late at night, after everyone had said their goodbyes and left for their rooms, a hand grabbed Moonzy's in the dark. They let it guide them through the barely lit hallways of their hotel, through a doorway, until they were both standing in front of a big window.
The ugly and gigantic Vegas sphere was looking back at them, and Moonzy tried to make a joke about the absurd thing that it was showing. But there was no response, not a verbal one at least.
Soft palms made contact with their jaw, guiding Moonzy's face upwards and they immediately closed their eyes. There were no fireworks, when their lips met, it felt normal, casual, as if they had done that a million times before. As if it was fated to happen by the universe.
More promises, this time whispered between open lips and soft sighs. Time continued to pass, this time without an ache on Moonzy's chest. One they didn't even realize was constricting their breathing until it was gone.
Flying all the way to London, kissing in the darkest part of the Brighton train station, falling into bed with them, choosing their matching outfits for the party, doing Ranboo's makeup, everything passed in the blink of an eye, but left a lasting memory in Moonzy's heart.
They have never felt this loved, not until then. In a room full of people that claim to love them, with the one that does love them. No matter what the future throws at them they are sure things will be fine, they will make sure of it.
Some are crying in the corner, others are cheering and celebrating but all they can feel is warmth and the rhythmic heartbeat on their nape. The one they love’s heartbeat, so close to them it mingles with their own.
A photo is taken, Moonzy smiles for the camera, a dazing grin that screams just how happy they feel in that moment. The arms around them tighten their hold on them once the phone doesn't show them their own faces anymore, their own reflections smiling back at them.
Time passes slowly now.
A countdown starts, but they couldn't care less about it. How could they? When Ranboo is slowly spinning them around in their arms? When their mouth widens into a smile as Moonzy takes off their mask?
The bell chimes for the last time, and Ranboo's blinding smile is suddenly pressed against theirs. They don't have to say it to know it. The hands resting on Moonzy's lower back mean ‘i love you’ The squeeze on Ranboo's shoulder does as well.
As the night passes and they walk towards Ranboo's house, hand in hand, the thought of going back home without them feels unbearable in their heart. But they will do something about that, sooner than later they will have their own house, with their own pets, all happy together.
They are sure of it, that everything will turn out fine. Especially when Moonzy wakes up a few days later to Ranboo telling them they are going to Paris the next day, and that they are tired of Brighton and want to leave as soon as possible. All in the same breath, but with a tone that felt like a promise.
Moonzy wants to propose, right then and there. But they don't, the thought etches itself into their brain. Someday, someday.
As Ranboo frantically packs for their surprise vacation, throwing clothes all over their room and even then, Moonzy is more and more sure of it. Things are going too fast, but they have been waiting for so long. They will be fine.
Time will pass, but at least they have each other now.
