Chapter 1: unknowing

Chapter Text

There came a single thought to Kaoru, one mellow afternoon while he was taking a walk around the Seisoukan Dormitory. It was one of those thoughts that randomly appeared to you when your head had nothing else to think about. A shower thought, but not really.

Kaoru was heading out of his dorm for the day, Nagisa and Yuta were out doing god knows what, maybe idol work, maybe lounging around for the day, it was artist’s interpretation at that point. Their remaining roommate, Kaoru, had absolutely nothing scheduled for the day, which was rather surprising considering how he was always busy as one of the main attractions of UNDEAD. No matter how many times he checked his phone, there was nothing.

Zilch , he realized. Not a single job offer, not a text from Anzu about a magazine to model for, not even a bothering text from Koga who would usually tell him to pick his ass up and get to practice—which their unit didn’t have today, it was an off day for the group. It was one of those days where Kaoru had free reign over his decisions, and could go do whatever and wherever his body wanted to take him.

And so, he did in fact pick himself up, and got ready for the day at 7:26 in the morning. He did a usual morning prep; a few stretches then a morning run, with a cup of yogurt and some fruits beforehand. After taking a lap around the entirety of Sky Garden, he returned to his dorm to shower and freshen up, changing into his new casual clothes he’s been sporting recently, a fresh change from his old, loose white tee. He sprayed on cologne and wore his watch, heading out to see what he might encounter today.

After the entire routine, he checked the time on his watch which now read 8:31. That was good, he still had plenty of time in the day to see what he could do. Kaoru decided to relax around the dorm’s lounge area, watching a few shows before he got tired and took a small cat nap.

Now, the time read 10:48. Unfortunately for Kaoru, time was going really slow. He woke from his nap, stretching before looking around to see if anyone was around. To his not so shocking surprise, it was still deserted. Perhaps it was a busy day, but he really expected to see at least one person today besides the security guards outside or whatnot, maybe even one of his juniors. He fished for his phone in his pocket, his mood dropping even more when he realized nobody even texted him.

Sure he appreciates not actually being bothered on his off days, but he still would very much rather have company than stay isolated with his thoughts all day

It was time he actually got to searching for someone to talk to, or bother depending on who he finds. Sitting up and stretching again, it feels like he was rising from bed like it was deja vu or something. Neatly rearranging the pillows on the couch, Kaoru decided to head for the rooms again to see if anyone was also lounging around just in the comfort of their dorms.

Picking out of random in his head, the roulette in his mind stopped at the third floor, so up the stairs he went to see who he could possibly find. Recalling the dorms at the third floor, there was a good amount of people there that he knew, like almost everyone in the marine club, and a few others too.

Kaoru smiled, there was bound to be at least someone there that he knew and could definitely share his company with. He was finally going to get rid of his lonely boredom.

During his ascent of the stairs, he distracted himself with a few thoughts from the burning pain in his legs after climbing so many steps. Why didn’t he just take the elevator? It was right there, maybe he could have caught someone in there too and stayed with him. Has he eaten enough breakfast yet? He only had a cup of yogurts and some fruits, nothing too sustaining. Kaoru took note that he should eat a more filling lunch today to make up for what he missed.

And then came that random thought.

Do I even know how to kiss someone properly?

“..What?” He blurted out loud, stopping in the middle of his ascent to genuinely ponder about that random question. However the more he thought about it, the more he realized that—fuck—he really didn’t know how to kiss someone. Okay, sure, he’s flirted with many girls before and took them out on dates, but it’s not like those relationships ever flourished into anything more to the point where he made out with one of them. He’s only ever gotten so far as pecking a girl on her lips, and that was it. None of that intimate, closed distance and holding each other in their arms type of kissing.

Kaoru had yet to experience that, anyways. Still, the more he climbed the stairs, the more his chest filled with a heavy embarrassment that he just couldn’t get rid of no matter what he tried thinking of.

And just as he was about to, he made it to the third floor. Hopefully he can find someone who could take his mind off such a silly thing. Approaching the first door, he forgot who was housed here but decided to try anyways, who knows who he could strike a conversation with.

He rapped his knuckle thrice on the wooden door, then waited.

“Hello? Is anyone in here? Excuse my intrusion~” Turning the doorknob, Kaoru peered inside to see whose room this was exactly.

“Mm? Ah, Kaoru-kun, come in, it’s a pleasant surprise for you to visit.”

“Rei-kun? Ahaha, so this is your room? How lucky of me~”

Welcoming himself in, Kaoru closed the door behind him, taking a seat next to Rei who seemed to be working on composing a new song for UNDEAD at the table off to the side of the dorm. Rei offered a smile, scooting closer in order to let his partner take a peak at what he was writing.

“And what do I owe the pleasure to, Kaoru? It’s not everyday you seek my company in particular.” Rei muttered casually, a bit focused on the writing at hand in order to not lose his rhythm he had in mind. A carefree chuckle from Kaoru came from his throat as the blond watched his buddy work.

“Boredom, really, I had nothing to do today, so I thought I’d stop by a few dorms to see who would be willing to keep me company, and I found you, Rei~” His eyes followed Rei’s hands as they wrote, it enticed Kaoru, but to be honest, what part of Rei didn’t?

“By the way Rei,” He glanced around the room. “Where’s Aira and Tenshouin?”

Continuing his pace of writing, Rei answered simply. “If my memory serves me correctly, I believe Tenshouin is out for a trip with fine. Shiratori is out with Oukawa, a date perhaps.” He chuckled lightly, and Kaoru smiled.

“A date, huh? Sounds so youthful~” Rei stopped composing temporarily to steal a glance at Kaoru, giving him a knowing grin.

“Familiar, Kaoru? May I remind you to not forget about your own days of youth.” The latter rolled his eyes and playfully scoffed. They shared a laugh before Rei averted his attention back to composing, humming the rhythm to see if it sounded good.

Kaoru silently observed the other for another few moments, basking and relaxing in the other’s company while time passed. This was normal between the two of them, Kaoru noticed. No matter what one of the two may or may not be doing, the duo would often find themselves with each other. Whether they talked for hours on end or not, or little to no words were muttered, they always enjoyed the presence of the other man, and before they knew it, the day would have already broken into dusk. Even then, they’d silently invite each other to watch the sun set, and observe as the sky was engulfed by the starry sky they’d so often see together.

And now, even during small little things like watching Rei work, Kaoru realizes that he does, in fact enjoy having company with him. He could never be isolated and alone for a long period of time. He realizes he longs for not just anyone’s company.

Kaoru’s heart sped up for a bit, he stole a glance at his unitmate who was still focused on composing. They’ve seen each other’s ups and downs, highs and lows, and have grown up together in UNDEAD. Rei Sakuma, who was the leader of former unit DEADMANZ, now the leader of UNDEAD, and as his partner, one of the two main attractions. Rei Sakuma, who has done nothing but make Kaoru feel warm and welcome, like the gentle embrace of the tides splashing against his legs on lonely nights when he longed for his late mother. Rei Sakuma, who would always be there even when he had his own family issues, always thinking of Kaoru and everyone around him even if he had a condition that made him significantly weaker during the day.

Rei Sakuma, the man he truly longed for.

“..Rei, do you know how to kiss someone?” He blurted out suddenly.

Pausing his thought process and placing his pen down, he completely turned towards Kaoru’s way with an expression that the blond was unable to discern right away.

“What was that? I couldn’t quite hear you.” Kaoru hit him lightly.

“Oh shut up, I am not repeating the question Rei. I know your ears are sharp. You know what—forget I even asked!” The latter chuckled, shaking his head as he rested his chin against his hand in amusement, watching his beloved friend pout and turn away.

“Haha, alright, I jest. You wonder if I know how to kiss someone?” The older narrowed his eyes on Kaoru, who hesitantly reverted his gaze back to Rei.

“..Yeah. Don’t ask why. Just curious, okay?” Kaoru realized he was getting defensive, hoping that Rei wouldn’t answer his own question with another question.

“..Does Kaoru himself know how to kiss someone, then?” There it was, along with that stupid shit eating grin Rei had whenever he knew he had the upper hand. It pissed Kaoru off, so the blond let out a groan.

“I said don’t ask why, and I definitely am not letting you answer my question with a question! Just say yes or no Rei, this is embarrassing enough for me.” Rei only laughed, it was a hearty one, a laugh that could only be described as sweet vanilla to Kaoru.

“Then yes, I do know how.” He answered honestly.

“Okay, cool.”

“Is that all?”

“Yep.”

Kaoru knew he was in deep waters. He was just hoping Rei wouldn’t ask again.

“Now, to ask Kaoru in return. Curiosity plagues me so.” He groaned. Rei only chuckled in return.

“..Just say it.”

“Do you know how to kiss someone, Kaoru?”

“You know, I have the right to not answer that.” Kaoru crossed his arms in defense.

“Kaoru surely owes me an answer, you are indebted to me after all, since you had originally asked me a question in which I replied truthfully.”

Fuck.

“..Fine, okay? I’ve.. I don’t know how to kiss someone properly.” That earned another amused look from Rei, who seemed completely engrossed in teasing Kaoru, his music sheet and notes long forgotten on the table.

“Is that so?”

“Yeah, that is so. Can we drop this—”

“Do you want to learn how?”

..

“..What?” That was the second time today that Kaoru was left speechless. Did Rei really just ask..?

“Did you want me to repeat it? I was asking if you wanted to learn—”

“Ah! Okay, stop, stop ! It’s embarrassing enough Rei!” Kaoru was now flustered heavily, the blush on his face visibly growing as he couldn’t even look at the other in the face. All these years that Rei knew him, and he never knew until today that his overly flirtatious partner doesn’t even know how to kiss someone properly. All those dates with girls, and the thought of Kaoru being unable to lip lock only makes Rei chuckle more.

“May I?” Kaoru’s eyes widened.

...

..

“N-No way, what?! I’m not kissing a guy, I—” were the last words stammered out of Kaoru’s mouth before he was silenced by a pair of soft ones pressing against his own. Both their eyes fluttered shut as Rei scooted closer, his hands trailing up to cup Kaoru’s face to help him relax. They lingered there for a bit before Rei pulled back slightly.

“Allow me to take the lead and show you, then you can try.” Kaoru nodded, letting Rei kiss him again, their lips pressing together again in a soft tandem. It started off sweet and gentle, their lips simply offering pecks before Rei pushed a little harder, their kiss deepening.

Kaoru’s shoulders relaxed visibly, his hands resting on Rei’s hips as they made out gently. The kiss was soft. Unrushed. It felt like the kind of thing that didn’t need to prove itself—gentle and sure, like the other had nothing to run from. For his first makeout session with someone, Kaoru found it undeniably enjoyable as he shared the warmth of Rei’s mouth with his own.

After what seemed like an eternity, they pulled away slightly, their eyes filled with a new passion, and their eyes never breaking away. It was as if they knew they wanted more, and Rei’s heated gaze only made Kaoru realize that they both needed another kiss, now

Then in an instant, lips touched lips again, this time deeper and with heightened passion as Rei only tilted his head to give Kaoru more access. Wrapping his arms around Kaoru, Rei shifted over to his lap, closing the distance to capture and savor more of Kaoru’s taste. The two only grew more desperate, their tongues brushing and dancing against one another, tentative then certain as the noises only served to make it more heated.

Rei had parted his lips with a sigh to catch his breath, only for Kaoru to take full advantage to slide his tongue back in with a slow, deliberate motion that only made Rei shiver. Hands roamed. Rei gripped Kaoru’s shirt with what could only be discerned as a small, needy whimper that the other hungrily swallowed. His hands on Rei’s hips gripped tighter, pulling the man in his lap flush against his chest as he only kissed Rei more and more.

“Kaoru—” Rei gasped, but even for a split second that their lips parted, Kaoru only dove back in for more, craving Rei’s taste on his tongue the entire time. When one pulled away for air, a string of saliva connected their tongues before Kaoru would intertwine them again, winning the constant fight for dominance.

After what seemed like an eternity of making out with one another, they finally pulled away, their chests heaving before Rei felt his body being lifted, and in the next second he was in his bed.

“You’ll teach me about your body now, right Rei?”
