Work Text:
It was a slow, quiet Saturday at UA. Nothing interesting was happening, everyone was off doing their own thing. A couple of the girls were painting each other's nails. You would've joined if you hadn't already done yours the night prior. Poor timing on your part.
Most of the boys were crammed around a new video game, shouting too loud and being generally obnoxious. Others were tucked away doing homework or just staying out of the common room entirely. Effectively leaving you bored out of your mind.
With nothing else to do and the weather being particularly nice, you decided on a walk. Late spring had finally hit, warm with a slight breeze it was perfect walking weather. Stepping outside the dorm doors, you immediately walked into something hard, catching a glimpse of red eyes and blond hair as you stumbled back to find your footing.
"HEY! WATCH WHERE YOU'RE WALKIN', LOSER!" Bakugou barked.
"Maybe if you weren't sitting in the middle of the walkway, I wouldn't have walked into you. Sheesh," you replied evenly.
He scoffed, turning back to his phone.
"What are you even doing out here? All the guys are inside playing that new game. Not your thing?" you asked, brushing invisible dust off your pants.
"Nah. It's just some stupid fighting game. Not really my thing," he muttered, still tapping away on his phone.
"Really? That's surprising, coming from you, Mr. Competitive," you teased, carefully walking down the steps, this time making a conscious effort to not trip on Bakugou again.
He looked up, ready to spit something back, but you were quicker. "Boo! Don't get your panties in a twist you know I'm right. Anyways, I'm going for a walk. Wanna come? Maybe stop by the convenience store too?"
Turning to face him as you walked backward, you caught the way he looked like it would be the most annoying thing in the world, but he stood up to join you anyway. You let out a little "yay," earning an even more annoyed look.
The walk started in comfortable silence, something you'd both come to enjoy. A much-needed peacefulness given the chaos of the dorms.
You try not looking at him knowing if he caught you staring, he’d blow you to oblivion. So, intend you admire the scenery around you. Everything around you were green and alive, the air clean and fresh.
Bakugou was the one to break the silence. "What's with the sudden walk? Don't you usually go in the mornings?"
You blinked, surprised he noticed. Gathering yourself, you answered, "Usually, yeah. But I wanted to sleep in today. Plus, I had something I wanted to do." You yelled the last bit as you cut in front of him and jogged across the street toward the convenience store.
"And you're dragging me along because?"
He crossed the street leisurely while you waited for him on the sidewalk.
"I'm not dragging you. I invited you. You came of your own free will," you said, nose in the air as you turned toward the store.
He rolled his eyes but followed you inside.
"If you want a drink or anything, I'll pay," you said over your shoulder. "Just nothing expensive, yeah?"
"Tch. I don't eat junk food. Shit slows you down and makes you fat," he grumbled, shoving his hands in his pockets, but paused when he noticed where you were.
"The hell do you need cat food for?" he asked, confusion taking over his features.
You kneeled in front of a display of wet cat food, smiling sheepishly. "You'll see," you said, grabbing six cans.
You make a quick stop to the fridges to grab 2 drinks before going to the register, you quickly pay for your goods and leave the convenient store with a wave and smile to the store clerk. Bakugou following, still confused and grumbling.
"Where the hell are you going with all that cat food?! You better not be doing some weird shit."
"Just shut up and follow me," you said, your tone sharper than intended.
You sped up just enough to walk beside him, leading the way through familiar streets until you hit a small park.
It was a little busier than usual, but you navigated the trails expertly, finally stopping at a small bridge over a river.
"We're here!" you chimed almost a little too happy.
"The fuck you mean, 'we're here'?" he scowled. "You dragged me out here to look at a sad bridge?"
"No," you said, matching his tone. "It's what's under the bridge."
You vaulted over the small fence, landing neatly in the grass below. Bakugou swore and tried to grab you but missed.
"What the fuck is wrong with you, you idiot—" he started, but was cut off by a soft meow.
You ignored him and disappeared under the bridge, leaving him no choice but to follow. Muttering curses, he hopped the fence easily and found you kneeling, surrounded by six hungry cats.
"You've gotta be kidding me," he muttered, sounding almost disappointed. "This is what you waste your money on? Feeding strays?"
"Quit being a dick and help me," you snapped, opening cans for the mewling cats.
"No way in hell I'm touching those disease-filled rats," he said, stepping back dramatically.
You gasped sarcastically and covered the ears of one of the cats, who leaned into your hand for more pets.
"Watch your mouth, mister. It's not their fault," you said, faking offense.
He scoffs and rolls his eyes at you but doesn’t respond. Instead, he takes a few steps forward and just watches you.
Under the bridge the sun can’t reach you making the atmosphere perfect. It’s warm but not horribly and there is a nice breeze going under the bridge blowing the hair off your face. You had small smile on your face, as you tuck a stray strand of hair behind you ear, petting any cat that would let you as. And you just couldn’t look more content.
It pissed him off how much such a small thing can make you so happy.
It was only recent that Bakugou realized he liked you. He was in complete denial at first and brush it off as nothing.
It pissed him off, just when he started his journey to achieve his dream to become the #1 Pro Hero you had to come along with your stupid fucking smile, and your stupid laugh, and that stupid look you would give him, it drove him insane this was the last think he needed.
But there you were with that stupid smile, talking to the ugly cats like they’d respond or something. He cringed internally for even thinking gushy shit like that. But his actions betrayed him as he subconsciously mimics your expression, and absentmindedly walking closer to you.
A high pinched meow and something fuzzy on his leg snapped him back to reality. Putting an all to familiar scowl on his face he crouches down and half-heartedly pet the fluffy black cat.
You huffed a laugh, catching his attention. "Don't be rude. I think she likes you." Moving a little closer to him and scratched the cat's head affectionately. "I call her Olive. She’s one of the more friendly ones. Her, that one over there” you point to a larger black cat “I call him Fig, and that one” directing his attention to a similarly sized gray tabby “I call him Skittles, they are the friendliest. The others are a bit skittish but we’re working on it.”
Bakugou just listened as you rambled about your strays.
After the cats had eaten their fill, they find a sunny spots to curl up for a nap. Standing up from your spot beside him and walking a little further under a tree.
"I don't just come here for the cats, you know," you said, plopping down and getting comfortable. Bakugou opting to lean against the tree.
"It's quiet here. Hidden. I usually come if I need peace and quiet," you continued. You shot him a playful glare. "So don't go telling people about my spot."
"Then why are you telling me?" he challenged.
You hesitated, looking away. "I don't know," you said quietly. "You looked like you needed it. You know after everything. "
He stiffened, caught off guard, quickly looking away. "I don't need your stupid pity. I'm doing just fine on my own."
"I'm not pitying you," you said, rolling your eyes. "I just… get it." Hugging your legs a little tighter to your chest, and resting you chin on your knees.
He studied your sudden silence, only humming in response.
Changing the subject, you pulled out the two drinks, tossing one to him. He caught it easily, frowning at the label.
"The fuck is this?" he grumbled. "I told you I don't want your handouts."
"Just take the stupid drink and shut the fuck up. God, have you ever let anyone do anything nice for you?" you teased. "Besides, you have to drink it. I won't. Those taste like shit." Pocking a straw in your own drink.
Caught off guard by your boldness but opens it regardless. The pop of the can as he opens is like music to your ears solidifying the smile on your face.
"Tch. Whatever. How'd you even know I drink these?"
"I'm supposed to be a Pro someday. Gotta be observant, right" you said with a shrug.
"And your practicing on me? Leave me outta your stupid schemes," he muttered, sipping the coffee anyway.
"You're stuck with me until graduation," you said brightly. "Might as well get used to it."
Bakugou only frowns into the can before tilting it up to drink. Just another stupid thing about you.
After sitting in peaceful silence, finishing your drinks and enjoying the view, you stand up and start gather all your trash and the scattered now empty cans of cat food.
"I've gotta start heading back. It's my turn to make dinner," you said, crouching to say goodbye to the cats.
"You can stay if you want. But don't stay too long we've got a curfew," you teased with a wink and turn to leave.
Only slowing as you hear him sigh and follow.
"No way I'm letting you cook alone after last time," he said, snatching the bag from your hand. "You burned the shit outta your hand just browning tofu." Turning to look at you with an accusatory look.
"Aww, Bakugou, you do care!" you teased, hiding behind your hands dramatically.
"No!" he snapped. "I just don't wanna find a finger in my food!"
He jumped the fence back onto the main sidewalk, you following close behind, grinning like an idiot.
"Sure, man, whatever keeps your boat afloat," you teased. "I'm thinking paninis for dinner. What do you think we should add?"
All the way back to the dorms, you planned out dinner, Bakugou muttering suggestions under his breath, pretending he wasn't invested but you knew better.
