Work Text:

When I flipped on the radio that night, I couldn’t believe the voice I heard coming through the speakers.

“Vince, are you there?” A panicked voice said through the static, my hand turning up the volume dial and the voice was muffled to my ears as I come to a realization.

“Naelian?” I stammered into the radio, sitting up from my seat.

“Vincent!” I hear Naelian say, and his voice was filled with excitement and relief. It was that soft voice, always soothing to my ears. I almost felt relieved, but that quickly faded and the smile I once had dropped to a thin line.

“You aren’t real,” I muttered into the radio, and I heard Naelians confused noise over the distortion which only made the pit in my stomach become all the more overwhelming.

“Vincent, its me! Naelian,” The man exclaimed into the equipment, desperate to have me understand but I knew the truth. This wasn’t the man I knew, I would never be able to have such a pleasure where I was.

I turned off the radio, throwing it onto my bed and sitting on the comforters with my face in my hands. I felt the tears run down my face as I choked up a sob. My body racking through my cries as I tried to wipe away the tears but all I could do was cry.

The man I knew wasn’t alive anymore. A faded memory in the back of my mind that was once so clear faded into the blurs of my memories. He was gone, swallowed by the scorching fire and eaten by the rotten flesh of our beings. I was a fool, betrayed by the nature I once called my home.

Naelian was taken from me, and I wouldn’t see his smile again. I wouldn’t hear him laugh again, would never see him again. Those thoughts only made me sob harder and I wanted to scream but I couldn’t have the hordes hear me. How cruel it was to have that mans soft murmurs mocked by our radio.

I moved my face from my hands, muffling a sob as my hands grab the radio once more and turn it on. A bright blue screen blurred by my tears and the static once more filled my ears. All I wanted to do was hear him one more time, even if it was cruel. Even if it wasn’t him, I needed to hear his soft words once more.

“Vince, are you there?” I heard in that voice once more, and all I could do was smile through my tears as I heard my lover once more over our radio.
