The captain’s still-bleeding body is spread out on the floor in the captain’s quarters, final shrieks of suffering having finally fallen silent. Ned’s violin is resting on the desk, bow dripping blood down to the wood below. The silence is deafening.
Ned stares at the object in his hands, turning it over gently. He’s never quite seen something like this before. It’s a small Christmas tree made of blown glass. It’s exquisite, much like one of his symphonies. He touches the tiny bell at the top with his fingernail, making it jingle. The sound is almost as beautiful as screams.
