Work Text:

“Throwing logic out the window” is a strange phrase to Logan, mainly because logic is not a physical item that can be thrown. And why specifically a window? According to Merriam’s Dictionary, the idiom “throw (something) out the window” means to stop using or thinking about something. The window is in reference to the need to escape. So throwing something out the window is to be able to dismiss and flee from the situation by throwing it away.

So, to say, “Throwing logic out the window” means to stop using logic. Which is Logan’s worst nightmare. The world functions on some basis of logical thinking. Even flawed logic is still a form of logical reasoning—just based on incorrect information caused by miscommunication or deception.

Now sadly, there is more to this idiom. To any normal human being, this is just a harmless phrase. However, for a figment of Thomas’ imagination, being the embodiment of Thomas’ logical thinking, the phrase holds more weight.

Luckily, it’s not as violent as getting ejected out the nearest window. Even if that would be the literal translation of the idiom. Instead, he disappears. A ghost is a good comparison to Logan’s experience. To be utterly invisible to everyone else. Unable to interact and help stop the conflict.

Like this one, where Thomas got his heart broken, and everyone was losing their figurative minds, Logan tried his best to calm them down. He tried to ease Roman’s ego, Patton’s heartbreak, and Virgil’s panic, to break Janus’ denial, and to quiet Remus’ intrusive thoughts. Logan tried. But emotions were too high, and no one was listening.

And so, Logan doesn’t exist. He just gets to stand there and watch as everyone has an emotional meltdown. He’s powerless, helpless, useless. He’s failed to help Thomas. Thomas can’t hear him. All he can do is watch and wait for them to calm down on their own.

How fitting is it that this happens? Logan doubts they ever notice. They’re too caught up in their emotions to realize Logan is gone. Then when he’s back, it’s just like he decided to show up.

Sometimes, Logan can’t take watching anymore and sinks into the subconscious for peace and quiet. He’ll get shot out once he’s needed again. He’s a core function of Thomas’ overall well-being. He can’t disappear forever. He’s not a feeling. As he once pointed out. They can repress him all they want; he’ll be back. And Logan will continue to do his job because that is what he was made to do.

Logan sees what happens repeatedly when the others shove him away. When he’s not there to help. It’s absolutely chaos. They need him, if they admit it or not. They can throw them all they want, but maybe Logan is like a boomerang. He always comes back.

Just a little thought piece about how idioms could affect the sides.
