Chapter 1: The Figure

Chapter Text

“Get out of my sight. Such a useless, pitiful child has no place here. Not anymore.”

The words of the orphanage’s headmaster reverberated in Atsushi’s hunger clouded mind as he lay motionless in the desolate alleyway. He had just turned 18, and as luck would have it, he’s on the brink of starvation. He hadn’t lived a very good life until this point, in fact, it wasn’t much of a life at all. Kicked out of the orphanage that never wanted him in the first place, by a man who relentlessly tormented him for years, only to end up in a dark alleyway halfway starved to death. Well, at the very least, it wasn’t too violent a way to die.

The exhaustion and hunger was weighing heavily on him and he was beginning to feel like he could no longer keep his eyes open. As the vision in his golden-violet eyes began to cloud, a dark figure suddenly towered over him, glaring down at him with deep red eyes that seemed to glow faintly.

“Such a pitiful creature” the soft yet sharp voice of the figure was almost comforting to Atsushi. Could this be an angel of death?

“…I know. I know I am” his voice came out weak and strained.

The exhaustion and hunger felt like gravity was crushing him and he was struggling to see the figure clearly. All he could manage to see were the blood red eyes staring down at him. Suddenly they weren’t staring down at him anymore. They were now directly in front of his face, level with his own heavy and strained eyes.

“What is your name, human” that voice again.

“Nakajima-Atsushi Nakajima…” He was surprised he had the strength to even say his own name.

“Atsushi Nakajima…I see”

The figure, with its eyes still fixed on him, extended a ghostly white hand, placing it on the side of Atsushi’s face. The cold bony white fingers felt as if they were piercing through his skin and if Atsushi wasn’t in his current condition, he might’ve flinched away from it.

The deep red eyes seemed to move even closer now, its cold breath hitting his skin. He suddenly felt a sharp sensation on his neck.

This truly was an angel of death sent to claim him, wasn’t it?

Atsushi smiled faintly, his eyes half-lidded. He was finally going to die. This was it.

His vision finally fades to black, losing consciousness as the figure slowly pulls back from his neck to look down at him again.

“No…I don’t think this one’s blood will be of any use to me…”

The figure stands up, abandoning the white haired boy where he lay, unconscious, but not dead. It only walks a few steps forward before stopping and turning to fix its glowing eyes on the boy again. It crouched down next to Atsushi, extending its hand to touch his face. The figure drew his long fingers across Atsushi's warmer skin, studying his features as he lay unconscious.

The figure sighed

"I suppose I cannot just leave you here, Atsushi Nakajima."
