“Mari, I'm home!” Luka called, slipping off his boots. “And I have a surprise!”
Marinette poked her head out of the bedroom. “What kind of surprise?”
Luka smiled. “A snacky surprise.”
Excitement lit up her face and she shuffled down the hall, rubbing at her rounded belly. “Your son has been practicing Mirakung-fu all day.” She grumbled.
His face softened and he placed his hand comfortingly on her belly, receiving a soft thud to his palm. He chuckled and kissed Marinette before holding up a bag. “Maybe this will make up for it.”
Marinette snatched the grocery bag, pulling out the bag of chips he had worked with Gina to track down. When she realized what it was, she gasped and tears started to fill her eyes.
Had her food cravings changed again?
Luka smiled nervously. “Are we happy? Or are we frustrated?”
“Happy.” She smiled brightly at him. “I can't believe you found these.”
“You want creamy mushroom chips, you get creamy mushroom chips.” He shrugged. “It's the least I could do while you're doing the lion's share with our little guy.”
He led her to the couch and pulled her into his lap, his hands resting on her belly.
Marinette popped a chip into her mouth and groaned with delight. “You are an angel, Luka Couffaine. I'm a lucky woman.”
Seeing his wife's joy over a simple snack and feeling their little one’s enthusiastic movements beneath his palms, he couldn't help but think he was the lucky one.
