Work Text:

Since Oikawa could remember, him and Iwaizumi would stick to eachother‘s side. No matter what other people thought of them, they were happy in eachothers presence. And since Oikawa could remember, he was in Love with his childhood friend.

It all started back then, when he was just six years old, he sat on the floor at the small town‘s playground. There was other children trying to gather Oikawas attention, as he was already, at the young age of six the most popular boy in his class. But his attention wasn’t on them. He could only find himself starring at the slightly smaller boy with short black hair on the side of the Playground, tossing a Volleyball against the wall. He quickly got up, ignoring the other kid’s protests. As he arrived next to the boy he greeted him with a big smile, showing his teeth.

„Hello you! Can we play?“

The shorter boy turned to face him, looking slightly irritated.

„Uhm, I dont even know you, my mother told me not to talk to strangers!“

„Im Oikawa Tooru, And who are you?“

„Iwaizumi Hajime…“ There was still a small sight of worry on his face.

„Hajime!“

„It’s Iwaizumi.“

„Well… Iwa-chan then!“ Oikawa smiled even brigther now.

„Can you toss me the ball?“

„Do you even know how to play?“

„Of course i do!“

Oikawa did in fact not know how to play, which in the end lead to him getting a volleyball thrown into his face. Iwaizumi looked rather proud than sorry. As he started crying Iwaizumi sighed.

„Dumb Oikawa, cmon let’s go home.“

Oikawa kept crying the whole way home. He only stopped as they were infront of his House.

„Thank you Iwa-chan for walking me home! Where do you live?“

„I actually only live about five blocks away, which means i have to see your stupid face again.“

„Mean Iwa-chan.“

„Get over it, see you soon.“

As he got home, Iwaizumi told his mother about the new friend he made today. To his surprise his mother knew the Oikawa family and Invited them over for dinner some days later.

As the doorbell was ringing Iwaizumis mother told him to let the guests inside. Just as he opened the door Oikawa jumped into his arms hugging him

„Iwa-chaaan, i missed you!“

„We’ve only met once and you’re already clinging to me!“

Iwaizumi let go of Oikawas grip just to hide behind his mother which now showed up at the front door. As they went to eat dinner Oikawa and Iwaizumi grinned stupidly at eachother pulling faces. After a while Oikawa’s parents got up to leave, but he just sat there looking at his parent with big eyes.

„Can i stay over pleeeeeease?“

„Hey don’t you want to ask me first?“ Iwaizumi objected.

„Iwa-chan! You are so mean.“

Oikawa started crying. Iwaizumi looked at him trying to figure out what exactly was so mean about him asking for this. He didn’t know Oikawa for long, but he somehow knew that this boy would be on his side for while now. He didn’t mind having to care for someone tho, he liked this boy.

When they were 13 years old, Oikawa wouldn’t leave Iwaizumi’s side. They were going to the same middle school now, Playing volleyball together, working out together, even going to the same classes. It seemed like nothing could separate them. But just as things were going really well, they lost their first match against a well known team.

This was Oikawas first interaction with the great Ushijima Wakatoshi. Things started going downhill from then on. Oikawa distanced himself from Iwaizumi, Playing Volleyball day and night, his grades dropped in school, he was no longer the perfect A Student. Nobody thought anything serious of it, except his best friend Iwaizumi Hajime. He knew something was off. Weeks passed without Oikawa telling anyone what was wrong. Each time Iwaizumi asked him what was wrong and how he could help him, he would put on his fake smile again, saying everything was fine.

Things did not get better when the new first grader Kageyama Tobio joined the Volleyball club. He was an extraordinary good and gifted setter, almost at the same level as Oikawa. This only lead to Oikawa training even more. He would miss the classes he thought weren’t important enough to go to just to play volleyball, just to work even harder.

One day, when Iwaizumi once again walked home alone, he messaged Oikawa asking him how long he was gonna stay to practice, due to it already being 9pm. As he got no answer he got worried and decided to go back to the Kitagawa daiichis gym, just to find Oikawa laying on the floor inside the gym, the net still up, A bunch of volleyball’s on the floor.

„Oikawa, what the hell?“

As he got no response, he kneeled down, grabbing Oikawa by his wrist.

„Please say something, Oikawa don’t scare me like this.“

He still got no response, Oikawa was shaking beneath him, it seemed like he was unable to breath, so Iwaizumi didn’t hesitate to call an Ambulance.

As the Paramedics arrived to take him with them, Iwaizumi refused to leave Oikawa’s side. He felt tears streaming down from his eyes as they quickly took him inside the ambulance.

That night, Iwaizumi stayed with Oikawa the whole time, holding his hand.

As Oikawa woke up the next day he felt a weight on his stomach, as he looked down he saw Iwaizumis head resting on him, he fell asleep on a chair right next to the Hospital bed, his hand on his waist. Oikawa remembered every detail of what happened, he felt ashamed of himself, not listening to his body, not listening to Iwaizumi. He felt Iwaizumi lifting his head, just to slowly look at Oikawa, seeing him awake made him sigh and putting his head right back to rest on him again.

„Dammit Oikawa, i was so scared of loosing you, do you know that?“

He lifted his head again to see Oikawa’s eyes water.

„Im sorry, Im so sorry.“

„im glad you’re okay, Tooru.“

Iwaizumi only called him by his given name in situations like this, In emotional moments only they were able to share together.“

Oikawa’s hand found it’s way to Iwaizumis head, removing a strand of hair from Iwaizumis forehead.

„Thank you for staying.“ He whispered

„Where else would i go?“

„You have everywhere to go, Hajime.“

„Not when i can be with you.“

Oikawa was Iwaizumi’s best friend for as long as he could remember. They grew up togehter, they went to the same school, played the same sports, but it was this moment which made Iwaizumi allow his feeling for his childhood friends. It was this moment where he allowed himself to love him.

The years passed, They were now 16 years old, in their first year of highschool. Oikawa was the best Setter of the year, already in the top 5 best Volleyball players of his league. Iwaizumi admired him even more now, seeing his best friend getting stronger, better and more handsome each day. It almost looked like everything was perfect, but Iwaizumi felt his heart ache everytime Oikawa talked to one of his Fangirls. Yes- he did reject each of them to his surprise but he wished to just have Oikawa to himself. One time they were walking to school when a bunch of fangirls approached Oikawa, just to gift him flowers, chocolate and some love letters. Oikawa took the gifts, thanked them and even read all of the them. Iwaizumi got more frustrated than he already was.

„Hey Iwa-chan you want some chocolate“

Oikawa offered him the chocolate the fangirls just gifted him, and the best part was he said it loud enough for them to hear.

„That was mean“

„I know, but im really not interested in any of them to be honest?“

„why is that so? You’ve rejected basically all of the girl confessing to you?“

„I guess im more interested in the other side.“

„ What do you mean by that?“

Iwaizumi's heart started beating faster, he knew what was about to come.

„Im kind of more into boys…“

„Oh, thats- Well alright“

„Are you homophobic iwa-chan?“

„No but you just never told me so it came out of the blue, but already speaking of it im also not into girls, just so- you know“

„Oh“

„Well I guess at least we’re not gonna fight over some girl“

„Stupid Oikawa, we would’ve never done that in the first place because all the girls wanted or still want you.“

„Naw Iwa-chan got jealous of everyones attention being on me, dont worry you got my attention tho!“

Iwaizumi felt like his heart could burst out of his chest any moment.

„Idiot“ Iwaizumi felt himself blushing.

A year passed, they now both were 17. Christmas started getting closer. It was cold outside and it was snowing. On December third, the temperatures reached -8 degrees.

„Iwaizumi Hajime, i demand you to watch Movies with me tonight.“

Oikawa knew he was down already before even hearing his answer

„How could i say no to you Shittykawa?“

„Mean Iwa-chan!“

It was already late at night when they finished watching a three hours long movie. It was their favourite one since they were kids. It got even colder and Oikawa started shivering.

„Iwa-chan it’s really cold!“

He was whining whilst curling up under the soft blanket Iwaizumi leant him. Iwaizumi sighed, grabbing a sweatshirt laying on the side of his bed giving it to Oikawa.

„Aww Iwa-chan cares so much about me!“

„Iwa-chans gonna punch you if you don't shut up“

Iwaizumi smiled softly, not enough for Oikawa to see. He saw Oikawa putting on his sweater, It fit him really well, Iwaizumi didn’t notice it was his favorite hoodie he let Oikawa borrow.

„Iwa-chan it’s your favourite hoodie!“ Of course Oikawa knew.

As he layed down again, he got closer to Iwaizumi, resting his head on his shoulder, hugging him around his waist. Iwaizumi was overwhelmed from the sudden contact. He felt safe whenever Oikawa did this. They did not often share physical contact, even tho Iwaizumi wouldn’t mind hugging him more.

„You’re so warm Iwa-chan“

He rested his head on Iwaizumis chest now, Iwaizumi just allowing it.
He looked so peaceful, cuddled up against Iwaizumi with closed eyes just holding onto him. Iwaizumi didnt hesitate to wrap his hands around Oikawa, pulling another blanket over them.
The following Nights Iwaizumi couldn’t sleep. He thought about Oikawa a lot. He wished for him to lay in his arms again, being close to him.

18 years old now, they both waited to graduate from high school.

It was their last day of school when Iwaizumi and Oikawa walked the way to school together one last time. Iwaizumi suddenly stopped walking.

„Tooru, it’s been so long, were finally graduating.“

„Time flies my dear Hajime…“

Iwaizumi decided this, this was the perfect moment for him to finally say what he’s been wanting to say. Maybe it was even the last moment he was able to say it.

And suddely nothing else matteres, it didn’t matter that they were standing on the side of the road just looking at eachothers eyes. It didnt matter that the people walking past them looked at them weirdly. Everything got quiet and it was just them. Just them in this exact moment knowing what’s to come.

„Oikawa Tooru, the person i will always go back to.“

He took a step closer to Oikawa, putting his hand on his cheek.

„Oikawa Tooru, the person that has been my best friend for ages.“

Iwaizumi looking into his eyes, smiling softly.

„Oikawa Tooru, the person i should’ve told sooner that i love him.“

And with that, he broke the last inched between them, placing a Kiss on his mouth. Oikawa slowly pulled Iwaizumi closer to himself, placing his hands on his waist. It wasn’t a needy, but a passionate kiss. A kiss saved with all the hidden emotions they couldnt express all these years. Iwaizumi slowly broke the kiss.

„I love you Tooru.“

„God i love you too, i have for so long.“

Oikawa pulled Iwaizumi into a hug. They held onto eachother for a long time. Neither of them wanting to let go.

„Hey, Hajime, let’s do this. Let’s graduate together.“

And with that Iwaizumi took Oikawas hand and for the last time they walked the way to aoba johsai highschool, the place they made a lot of memories in, but more importantly the place they learnt to accept their love for eachother.
