Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

When Jay collapsed during practice, no one initially thought much of it. Exhaustion after days of almost nonstop dancing wasn't unusual in the perfectionist world of K-pop. But then, something unexpected happened—Jay started crying. It wasn't loud or dramatic; he just lay there, hugging his knee, his arms trembling as small gasps of pain escaped his lips.

"Hey, is everything—" Jungwon began, his voice tinged with worry. But then Jay looked up at them, his face wet with tears, his lips trembling, and his hair disheveled. The most alarming thing was his eyes; they were filled with pain and fear, a raw vulnerability that left everyone stunned. They were at a loss, unsure whether this was just a serious injury or something more alarming.

After what felt like an eternity, Heesung rushed to Jay's side, gently pulling him into an embrace that Jay quickly sought comfort in. His sobs quieted, but the distress in the room was palpable. Before they could ask any questions, the manager stepped in and began guiding Jay away.

"Just for some checkups. We'll be right back," the manager reassured them, even as Heesung hesitated to let go of Jay.

Silence fell once Jay and the manager left for the hospital. The remaining members exchanged worried glances. Niki seemed on the verge of tears, while Jake already had tear stains on his cheeks.

"What just happened?" someone finally whispered, voicing the confusion and concern they all felt.

The practice room felt hollow without the usual lively banter and music. The members were scattered, each processing the situation in their own way. Niki paced anxiously, his sneakers squeaking against the polished floor. Sunghoon sat cross-legged, staring at his hands, while Sunoo pulled his hoodie tighter around himself, eyes glistening with unshed tears.

"He seemed so... terrified," Sunoo finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. His gaze was fixed on the spot where Jay had collapsed, as if expecting to see him there again. "What if it's worse than we think?"

Jungwon, the de facto leader in moments like these, took a deep breath. "We can't jump to conclusions. But whatever it is, we need to be there for him. He needs us now more than ever."

The room fell silent again, each member lost in thought. Time seemed to stretch on forever until the door finally opened. Their manager walked in, his expression somber, followed closely by Heesung, who looked drained but resolute.

"How is he?" Jake blurted out, the words rushing out in a breathless whisper.

The manager sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Jay's stable. He's dealing with a chronic knee issue that's been exacerbated by overwork and stress. The doctors have recommended a significant period of rest and treatment. It could be several weeks, maybe even months before he's back on his feet."

The gravity of the news hit them like a wave. Sunghoon clenched his jaw, holding back the tears that threatened to spill. Jake, who had been holding it together, felt his resolve crumble as a tear slid down his cheek. Niki looked away, blinking rapidly.

"What about the tour? The comeback?" Niki asked, his voice cracking. They all knew how much was riding on their schedules, the expectations from fans, the pressure from their agency.

"We'll have to make adjustments," the manager replied. "We'll take it one step at a time. The priority is Jay's health."

Heesung, sensing the group's rising anxiety, stepped forward. "Guys, listen," he said, his voice steady despite the tumult inside him. "Jay's strong. He's one of the toughest people I know. We'll get through this together, as a team. No matter what happens, we have to support each other."

Jungwon nodded, trying to inject some positivity into the room. "He's right. We're a family. We'll visit him as soon as we can, and in the meantime, let's focus on what we can do to help."

With a plan in mind, they decided to head to the hospital to see Jay. They wanted to be there when he woke up, to reassure him that they were with him every step of the way.

Later that evening, they arrived at the hospital, a palpable mix of fear and hope in the air. The sterile smell and the low hum of fluorescent lights made everything feel surreal. They approached the room where Jay was staying, their footsteps quiet against the polished linoleum floor. As they reached the door, they hesitated, exchanging worried glances before stepping inside.

Jay lay on the hospital bed, his leg encased in a brace, his face pale but calm. His eyes flickered open as they entered, and he managed a weak smile. "Hey, guys," he rasped, his voice hoarse from crying.

Jungwon was the first to speak, forcing a smile. "Hey, Jay. How are you feeling?"

Jay chuckled softly, though it sounded more like a pained sigh. "Like I danced too hard and forgot to stop." His eyes grew serious, the smile fading. "I'm sorry, everyone. I didn't want to worry you."

Heesung shook his head, walking over to the bed and placing a comforting hand on Jay's shoulder. "Don't apologize. Your health is more important than anything else. We're just glad you're okay."

Sunghoon leaned against the wall, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. "We were all scared, man. You scared us." His voice softened, revealing the depth of his concern.

Jay looked down, tears welling in his eyes. They had never seen him like this before. So fragile and small. "I hate this. I hate that I might have to sit out while you all keep going."

Jake stepped forward, wiping his own eyes. "Jay, we're a team. We're not leaving you behind. We'll figure out a way to make this work."

Niki, usually the most energetic, was uncharacteristically quiet. He approached Jay, his expression serious. "You always push yourself too hard, hyung," he said softly. "But you need to rest now. Let us take care of you for once."

The room was filled with a quiet, comforting solidarity. They spent the next hour sitting with Jay, sharing stories and jokes, doing their best to lift his spirits. The tension eased as they laughed together, even if the laughter was tinged with sadness.

As visiting hours drew to a close, the manager gently reminded them it was time to leave. Heesung lingered, his hand still resting on Jay's shoulder. "We'll be back tomorrow," he promised. "And every day after that. You're not going through this alone."

Jay nodded, slightly hugging him from the side, small, grateful smile playing on his lips. "Thank you, guys. I really appreciate it."

As they left the room, their manager pulled them aside. "This is going to be tough, but I know you all can handle it. We'll work with the company to adjust the schedule. Just focus on supporting Jay and each other."

They nodded, a new determination settling in. They knew the road ahead would be challenging, both professionally and personally. But they were ready to face it together. As they walked out of the hospital, the air felt a little lighter, the weight of their worries lessened by the strength of their bond.

For the next few days, they visited Jay regularly, bringing him meals, games, and news from the outside world. They worked on their performances with an intensity fueled by their desire to make Jay proud, even in his absence. And slowly, they began to see a light at the end of the tunnel, a hope that Jay would recover and rejoin them on stage, stronger than ever.

In the meantime, they stayed connected, their group chat filled with messages of support and encouragement. They knew that no matter what challenges came their way, they would face them, united in their love for each other and their passion for the music and performances that brought them together.

And in the quiet moments, when the world outside seemed distant, they found comfort in the knowledge that they were not alone. They had each other, and that was enough to get through anything. Right?
