Work Text:
The hospital was quiet, always so damn quiet, the sight of Max so still on the stark white sheets. He wasn’t sure why it took so damn long to work up the courage to come here alone. A shallow grunt leaving his hips as he lowered himself onto the unoccupied chair, the only sound in the room the beeping of the machines keeping her alive. “I hate you. I hate you so much and I need you to know that.”
The silence continued, his voice low as it all spilled free. “You fucking promised. You fucking promised me that you would protect her. You swore on it. I hate you. I hate you more then words can describe.” A sob broke free from the other side of the room. Tear-stained face lifting to meet his stare. His expression stone cold. “I need you right now man you can’t just-” He moved, the shattering of glass loud in the room as tears started to spill, saltiness obscuring his vision as he surged to his feet, hands slamming into the closest wall. “You fucking promised me that she would be okay, and you fucking lied to me!”
Silence descended once again agony filling every grove in the room as he swallowed back a scream of despair. “I won’t ever say I wish it was you in that bed. Never. I refuse to let you cop out by agreeing with me. Just know that you failed. You failed to protect her and for that you deserve every razor blade that feels as though its filling your lungs. Choke on them and suffer.” With every word said a pained whine left the other occupant, leaving the room with the door shut silently behind him as more tears trailed down his cheeks. Lucas’s sobs filling the room behind him as he hobbled away from Max’s room for the last time, his hat sat delicately on the bedside table beside her still form.
