Work Text:
The air in the country was different. It wasn't just cleaner, it was freer, filled with possibilities. Cressida secretly enjoyed the escape from London's relentless social season, which was a parade of expectations she could never quite live up to. She arrived at the Bridgerton estate expecting the usual tiresome company. Instead, she found herself increasingly drawn to the enigmatic Eloise Bridgerton.
At first, it was simply pleasant Eloise shared her distaste for the ton's superficialities. They bonded over late-night conversations in the drawing room, discussing literature, philosophy, and their dreams beyond what society expected of them. It was a refreshing change from the constant pressure to find a suitable husband.
As the weeks in the country wore on, Cressida noticed a shift in her feelings. She looked forward to their talks, the way Eloise’s eyes sparkled when she spoke passionately about something, the brush of their hands as they walked side by side through the gardens. It was more than friendship. Cressida felt an ache, a longing she had never known before.
Returning to London for the new social season, Cressida was apprehensive. The country had felt like a bubble, a safe haven where their growing bond was nurtured away from prying eyes. In the bustling city, it was harder to steal moments alone with Eloise. Still, every glance and smile they exchanged seemed to hold a world of unspoken words.
At the opening ball hosted by Lady Danbury, Cressida found herself watching Eloise from across the room. Eloise, with her quick wit and disdain for societal norms, stood out amongst the simpering debutantes. Their eyes met, and Eloise gave her a small, encouraging smile. Cressida’s heart pounded in her chest. She could no longer keep her feelings a secret.
Later that night, under the pretense of needing fresh air, Cressida slipped out to the garden, her nerves frayed. She had to tell Eloise. She could not endure another day of wondering and wishing.
"Cressida?" Eloise's voice broke through her thoughts. Cressida turned to see her standing there, illuminated by the moonlight, looking as beautiful and fierce as ever.
"Eloise, I..." Cressida's voice faltered. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "There's something I need to tell you."
Eloise stepped closer, her eyes searching Cressida's face. "What is it?"
Cressida felt a rush of fear and exhilaration. "I think I've fallen in love with you, Eloise. I can't stop thinking about you. I can't keep pretending that my feelings are only those of friendship when they are so much more."
For a moment, there was silence. Cressida feared the worst—that she had misread everything. But then Eloise smiled, a brilliant, heart-stopping smile.
"Oh, Cressida," she whispered, taking Cressida’s hands in hers. "I've been waiting for you to catch up. I've been falling in love with you too. I didn't know if you felt the same, but I thought.. I hoped..."
Cressida's breath caught. "Truly?"
Eloise nodded, her eyes shining. "Yes. And now that it's out in the open..." She didn't finish her sentence, instead leaning in to press her lips gently against Cressida’s.
The kiss was soft and shy, a gentle exploration of newfound emotions. Then it deepened, filled with the passion and longing they had both kept hidden for so long.
