Chapter Text
During the car journey with her father from Busan to Seoul, Haechan found herself haunted by a painful scene that insisted on replaying relentlessly in her mind.
Desperate for distraction, she tried to observe the scenery out of the window, flip through a brochure handed to her by a lady at the traffic light, listen to music with headphones at full volume, and even draw on the window fogged up by the cold wind. However, nothing seemed to dispel the anguish filling her chest, echoing in the emptiness around her, perhaps amplified by the gray sky and melancholic wind.
The idea of living away from her mother and siblings, Yangyang, Lucas, and Sungchan, was overwhelming. Despite the hardships caused by their difficulty in understanding their parents' decision, Haechan considered them her family, and that would never change. Geographical proximity wouldn't compensate for the absence of constant presence, filled with playful moments and shared experiences.
Reflecting on her parents' divorce, which happened a month ago, Haechan realized the transformation in her life. The jokes and smiles persisted in public, but at home, without the mask of her unreal world, the sadness was more intense. The desire to cry surpassed the ability to easily smile, while eating habits became a reflection of the slow and painful deterioration of a part of her.
Even facing the challenge of accepting reality, Haechan did not allow herself the illusion that it would be better if her parents stayed together. She acknowledged that if they were truly happy, they wouldn't have chosen divorce.
Exhausted, with her head resting on the fogged-up car window, Haechan saw the day turn into night. She recalled family dinners, collaboration in the kitchen, and TV sessions before bedtime. The feeling of having lost everything was overwhelming, and she needed to accept that the good memories would remain, but hope needed to be left behind.
While the past no longer promised a future, the unknown approached without a clear instruction manual. It wasn't the past that frightened Suh Haechan, but rather the uncertain future unfolding before her.
