Helium

Summary:

Uzi Doorman, an angsty ‘leave me alone’ type, ends up moving with her dad to a new town for her first year of college. There she ends up finding a job that leads a curious schoolmate to be intrigued by the girl.

Chapter Text

The wind twists and turns through the air causing the flowers in front of Uzi’s new home to sway quickly, but gracefully. Uzi watches the lovely purple-flowered salvias and golden marigolds as they dance together despite the air almost being at the lowest of temperatures to kill the beautiful plants.

It’s going to snow in a few days according to the weather forecast, which sucks. Not that Uzi hated the cold weather, in fact she loved it, but the plants will get damaged and wither away. Even so, that’s usually how nature works and she can’t do anything about it.

It’s a cycle that never ends.

That’s a bit angsty, isn’t it?

Uzi jumps as her father interrupts her thoughts by slamming a box behind her unexpectedly. She turns to see a hint of disappointment in his eyes.

”Uzi, I’d very much appreciate it if you help your old man out here with your stuff instead of staring at silly flowers.” Khan frowns. It earns an eye roll from the girl.

”Sorry dad, and for the record they’re not silly.” Uzi mumbles as she grabs the box. She finally steps through the door of her new home and halts.

This place is nice..

A lil’ too nice.

Uzi is slightly in awe as she checks out the kitchen.

“There’s a fucking island?!” She whisper-screams to herself as she witness the mighty kitchen island.

She continues looking around, carefully trying not to miss a step on the stairs from the kitchen that leads directly to the sunken living room. She does a quick spin to look around before heading towards the main hall.

She walks through the halls and looks at each of the rooms. Once figuring out which room she likes best, she finally sets her box down.

Now to bring the rest in.’ Uzi thinks before groaning to herself.

The purple haired girl drags herself outside only to see her father talking to a familiar face.

She shuffles awkwardly towards them.

”Auntie Alice?” Uzi asks, tilting her body.

”Uzi, dear!” The ginger smiles with her arms out wide. The woman goes to hug the younger, only to get met with a dodge.

”Wh- What are you doing here?” Uzi asks with a brow raised.

“Oh, Zizi-” She starts, brushing off the fact her niece rejected her hug, ”I came to help! You just moved here after all.”

Khan makes a thumbs-up with a smile to top it off behind the woman in signal for Uzi to just roll with it, which the younger does.

”Cool. Thanks then?”

It came out more like a question than statement.

Alice hums happily before turning to Khan and going back to helping.

Uzi shuffles her feet awkwardly before grabbing the rest of her stuff.

This is gonna be a while.’ She thinks to herself.

Uzi was right, and she kinda hates being right.

She leans on the newly brought in couch. The poor girl is tiredly fighting the need to close her eyes. She yawns and tries to focus as she’s being forced to sit and listen as Khan and Alice catch up properly.

She completely tuned out, not realizing she’s currently being called to as she stares at her mothers favorite vase.

”Uzi?”

She stares blankly still.

”UZI!”

The girl jumps, “Huh? What?!” She asks confused.

”I was asking if you’d like to work at a café near here and the college you’re going to!” Alice smiles.

Uzi makes a face.

”Working? Already?” She tilts her head.

”Well, you are an adult. I can’t buy everything for you. Especially college tuition.” Khan fake laughs.

Uzi feels her eye twitch.

”What’s the café called? I’ll check it out tomorrow.” She mumbles, giving in.

”The Elliott’s Starlight! Such a wonderful and delightful place. A young boy your age works there. I believe his name was Thad? I don’t remember but you’ll love it there!” Alice smiles widely. Khan also smiles raising thumbs up at Uzi once again.

Uzi resists the urge to groan and gives a fake smile.

”Sounds.. great.” She states unenthusiastically.

”Wonderful! I’ll take you tomorrow then.” Alice states as she gets up.

”You don’t have to, I can drive ther—“

”Nonsense, Zizi. I’ll take you around 4 so you can meet the manager I was talking about. He’s a very nice gentleman.” She giggles before heading for the front. Khan follows closely behind.

”Well it was really nice catching up, Khan! Glad seeing you again, Zizi. My time here is up though so I must be going now. Love you both!” Alice states hugging Khan and blowing a kiss at her niece.

Gently, Khan closes the door giving a wave goodbye.

”That went great!” He says loudly to himself.

“Yeah, for you.” Uzi frowns from the living room.

”What was that Uzi? Did you say something?” Khan genuinely asks, now leaning on the kitchen railing.

Uzi scoffs before getting up to set the rest of her new room up.

Khan frowns, watching his daughter in confusion and slight sadness before shrugging it off.

Just Uzi being Uzi.

Speaking of which, the poor girl flops herself down onto her new mattress. They weren’t able to deliver the bed frame in time, so it just rests on the floor shiny wood floor.

Uzi doesn’t really mind, it’s not bad or anything as long as she can sleep.

She groans into the mattress before opening her boxes. She tugs out some blankets and pillows, her laptop, and her pajamas.

She also leaves out clothes for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a major day..’ She thinks looking at the vanity mirror her dad bought for her.

First getting set up in her new college then a job search.

Yikes.

The young adult sighs before changing out to her pjs.

Her dads right. She needs a job. She can’t always depend on him, especially with her mom gone. He’s already in pressure of his own work and dealing with mourning.

If it’s a job she needs, it’ll be a job she’ll get.

She can do this.

It won’t be like her last town.

She won’t let it.

She can’t handle that again.

Uzi drops herself onto the mattress once more before wrapping herself into a cocoon.

With one hand she opens her laptop to pull up her music. She quietly puts her playlist in shuffle and lets it run as she closes her eyes.

Tomorrow is another day, Uzi Doorman.

Lets make it worth it.
