Work Text:
“Jinnie, I know I’m just supposed be a passenger princess, but I swear this isn’t the way home..”
Felix says with a bit of concern in his voice directed toward his boyfriend of four years. They two had just left the movies (they saw Barbie) for their weekly date night and caught the latest showing since they’re both night owls.
It was around 1:30am and Felix could tell they weren’t taking the normal route to their shared apartment, wondering why the hell his boyfriend was going a different way this late into the night.
“Oh, it’s not? Huh…guess I took a wrong turn somewhere..”
Felix rolled his eyes at his boyfriend’s response, the tone in his voice obviously hinting at the fact that he did this intentionally. He huffed, crossing his arms before sighing and starting dramatically out of the window.
Hyunjin shook his head fondly at the younger’s antics seeing as how his own dramatic habits have rubbed off on him. Hj placed one of his hands on Felix’s thigh, squeezing it gently before turning the volume of the radio down with the buttons on the wheel.
“See, we’re here already you big baby~”
Felix clicked his tongue, about to to argue with the other that it’s too late be somewhere random in the city but his word immediately caught in his throat once he looked through the front window.
Hyunjin had parked the car near the edge of a cliff, the view from the lit up city able to be seen easily. The mix of reds, whites, yellows and blues flickering along the roads, the luminous building signs towering over the people who walk the streets during the night. The glowing lamp posts littering the sidewalks almost resembling shimmering stars from how far up they were.
But nothing could compare to when Hyunjin let up the sunroof, exposing the naturally bright night sky. The constellations scattered across the dark void as the moon was being covered my the tree branches, almost like a blanket.
“Jinnie, oh my god, this is- how the hell did you even find this place?”
Felix looked at the taller, wide eyed like he had just seen the secrets of the universe.
“I came across it one day after I had to stay back for work…probably about 2 months ago?”
“Why are you just now showing me??”
Hyunjin could only chuckle softly at his lovers eager curiosity, turning the car engine off before shrugging.
“No time ever really felt right, I guess. But now did.”
“God, you’re such a sap.”
Felix said flatly with a dramatic sigh but Hyunjin paid no mind to it. The faint blush on his boyfriend’s smiling cheeks was worth anything and everything he could possibly say.
They sat in a comfortable silence, Hyunjin letting Felix admire their surroundings for a few minutes before unbuckling his seatbelt and getting out of the car.
Felix looked at him with a confused expression as the taller made his way over to Flx’s side of the car. Hyunjin opened his car door with a small smile, signaling for him to get out and offering him his hand.
The brunette reluctantly unbuckled his own seatbelt, taking Hyunjin’s hand and closing the door behind him.
“Alright, up we go~”
Felix looked at the other with a confused expression once again but had no time to ask what he meant before being abruptly lifted by his waist and being placed onto the hood of the car with a small yelp.
“Hyunjin, what the hell- you’re seriously going to give me a heart attack, you know that?”
“Oh, hush. You’re fine, princess.”
Hyunjin rolled his eyes at the other before hopping onto the hood of the car himself. He scooted backwards until his back hit the front window, patting the spot beside him for Felix to come back next to him.
The younger carefully moved back as well, trying to make sure not to damage the hood of the car, not that Hyunjin seemed to mind anyways.
Once there, Felix let out a long sigh as he rested the side of his head on the ravenette’s shoulder, looking up at the stars once more.
“You know what these remind me of?”
Hyunjin asks quietly as he points up to a certain string of constellations above them, taking Felix’s hand in his to point him the right direction.
“What..?”
“These stars right here..”
The taller brings his hand down to place it on the side of Felix’s cheek that’s not resting on his shoulder, caressing the soft freckled skin with his thumb.
Felix’s brain seems to malfunction a bit at his words, shaking his head as he tried to bury his face into to the crook of Hyunjin’s words. The older may be a sap, but Felix is so weak for his sappiness and Hyunjin knows that.
Hyunjin only laughs lightly at his lover’s actions, wrapping his arm around Felix’s shoulder before taking out his phone and scrolling through it to find something.
“What’re you looking at..?”
Felix isn’t trying to pry or be nosey but he can’t help wanting to know what his boyfriend could possibly be on his phone for when he’s the one who brought him to this place.
“Just hold on, baby.”
He says absentmindedly, causing Felix to frown a bit but not pushing any further, deciding to just look back up at the stars as Hyunjin does whatever he’s doing.
After a couple of minutes Hyunjin places his phone on top of the car roof. Felix looks at him with a raised eyebrow but before he can question it, a familiar melody starts to come out of the speaker of the phone.
A flock of birds, hovering above. Just a flock of birds that’s how you think of love.
“Hyunjin..”
Felix looked at his lover who wore an unreadable expression on his face as he kept his gaze on the stars above them. He could usually tell what Hyunjin was thinking, especially after being around each other for almost a decade now. But this time he couldn’t.
And I always…Look up to the sky, pray before the dawn. Cause they fly always..
The brunette remembers the first time he introduced Hyunjin to this song. It was their first live on tiktok together after one of their Maniac concerts. He remembers reading so many of their shippers tiktok’s and tweets about the live and laughing about it with the taller.
But what stuck was how they looked at each other. Felix was always looking at Hyunjin whenever and wherever. The man’s presence almost like an anchor for him. But at the time, he didn’t realize that Hyunjin was always looking at him too.
He rewatched that live over and over and over, completely in a trance every time he saw the look in Hyunjin’s eyes when he looked at him. Hyunjin was always looking him. So why wasn’t he looking at him now?
Sometimes, they arrive…sometimes they are gone. They fly on..
Hyunjin remembers the first time Felix played this song for him too. He didn’t understand every word at the time, but after their live he replayed the song over and over and over until he could recite it in his dreams.
Something about the lyrics, the melody, the feelings behind the voice, made it feel like the song encased any and every feeling he had for the younger male. Said and unsaid.
A flock of birds, hovering above.
Into smoke I'm turned and rise following 'em up. Still, I always…Look up to the sky, pray before the dawn. Cause they fly always..
Hyunjin finally removed his gaze from the stars, looking down at the one beside him.
“You remember this song, princess?”
“Of course I do, dummy. How could I forget..”
One minute, they arrive, next, you know they're gone. They fly on…
Hyunjin chuckles softly at the younger’s response, leaning down to kiss his temple before digging through his hoodie pocket with his free hand.
Fly on, on…
After a few seconds he pulls out black velvet box, laughing lightly as he sees Felix’s eyes widen in shock.
“I’m not proposing yet, don’t worry.”
“Ah..”
’Yet’. Even though they’ve talked about this many times before, that one word still rings through his body. The tips of his ears go red as he brings two fingers up to his neck to check his pulse. A cute habit he has yet to break.
Hyunjin gives the box to Felix, allowing him to open it himself, thinking to himself that it’ll give it more significance.
Upon opening the box, Felix’s breath hitches, hands shaking as he examines the contents. It’s two pairs of black and white homaika rings. An exact replica of the ones they lost so long ago.
“H-Hyunjin…what-? How did you-? Didn’t they stop making these?”
The endless questions roll off of the brunettes tongue, small hands still shaking even as Hyunjin takes the box back from him.
“I made a few…a lot of calls. But it was really nothing. Nothing’s too much for you.”
Felix can feel the inevitable tears pricking at his eyes, cursing himself under his breath for still being able to cry so easily.
“I don’t know what I did in my past life, but I swear I must’ve been a saint…”
The freckled male barely manages the to get the words out, his voice shaking a bit as Hyunjin takes his hand and slides the fitted rings onto his pointer finger, exactly where they belong.
“Lee Felix. My Yongbok. My sunshine, my world, my princess…the love of my life. Being able to give you these rings is my promise to you to love you and care for you for as long as my heart beats. I can’t imagine my life without your beautiful smile waking me up everyday or the brownies that I just know you laced with something..”
Felix laughs quietly at his boyfriend’s teasing, letting the tears fall freely now as he listens intently. His hands squeeze the others as he talks, subconsciously trying to move impossibly closer to Hyunjin and soak up anything and everything he has.
“…but whatever you did, it worked. You’re the most kindhearted and pure soul I know and you deserve the world. I promise I’ll do my best to give it to you everyday.”
So fly on, ride through. Maybe one day, I’ll fly next to you.
Hyunjin lets go of Felix’s hands to place them on his cheeks, wiping away the falling tears with his thumbs.
Felix sniffs quietly, looking up at the other like he just hung the moon and the stars, trying to pull himself together before grabbing the box off of Hyunjin’s lap.
He takes out the other pair of rings, taking one of Hyunjin’s hand off of his face and slinging the rings onto his ring finger before looking back up at him with his tear rimmed eyes.
“Hwang Hyunjin…my Jinnie. My moon, my prince, the love of all my lives…My reason to live. I promise to be my best for you everyday, to wake you up with a smile and be your energizer. You are my rock and you keep me grounded. I promise to always keep you above water and love you and everything that comes with no matter what.”
Fly on, ride through. Maybe one day, I’ll fly next to you..
Hyunjin’s eyes start to gloss over as well, only able to nod his head as he feels the emptiness on his ring finger finally being filled once more.
He swiftly pulls the younger onto his lap, both of them looking at each other with unfallen tears. Speaking so many words without saying anything at all.
Like a purely magnetic force, they lean in at the same time, everything feeling back balanced in the world once their lips finally connect. Felix wraps his arms around Hyunjin’s neck, begging to be closer to him as the latter wraps his arms around his waist.
There’s nothing lustful behind the kiss. Just raw, unadulterated love for each other, more than they even know what do with. Their tears mix on their lips, both tasting the salt of it but not finding it in them to care at all.
Felix only pulls away after several seconds to reluctantly take a breath of air and Hyunjin can’t help but laugh at their flushed and wet faces. He places a hand on the back of Felix’s head, pulling him down till their foreheads are resting against each other.
“I love you. More than any three words could ever convey.”
Fly on…
Felix sighs happily as they bask in each other’s embrace, eyes fluttering closed as he feels the warmth radiating from the other.
“Jinnie, when I think about you…all I can see is us in every lifetime. Thank you for loving me. I love you more than you could ever, ever know.”
Fly on.
