Work Text:
Both Wednesday and Enid cherished every memory they created with their family.
The twins were growing up fast— they were already five years old— and time wasn’t going to slow down, unfortunately.
So, both women knew they had to make the moments last while they could.
Whilst Wednesday saved tender moments in her mind space for safe keeps, Enid was the type of mother to photograph and frame it if she really wanted to savior it.
Tonight was a night that neither mother would forget.. however, if they could? They’d loved to forget this nights events and never look back.
But that just wasn’t possible.
“I thought mommy was the strong one!”
Wednesday rolled her eyes for what felt the one hundredth time that night. She was currently carrying Sunday, their rather rambunctious daughter, on her back.
She was also mentally cursing whoever created the concept of this so called “piggy back riding” as it was downright ridiculous.
Seriously? The shit kids found entertaining would never cease to blow her mind..
But, it also meant that they’d arrive at their desired destination much faster verses waiting for Sunday’s little legs to catch up— so, that factor was a plus, she supposed.
Where were they going?
No where in particular, not exactly.
It was late at night and the family of four were currently walking through the thick woods that surrounded their family home on the outskirts of gloomy Jericho.
Nothing like a picnic under the rising full moon as a family! That was most definitely an Addams family thing to do.
Enid and Fang were up ahead on the trail, making process much easier than Wednesday and Sunday, in all brutal honesty.
Fang was peacefully on top of Enid’s shoulders, hands on her head— giggling as he had to duck under low hanging branches of the trees they passed here and there.
Hell, Enid was even carrying their blankets and rather heavy basket of late night snacks.
Whilst Wednesday was.. admittedly.. struggling to carry just their little daughter.
“Silence is preferred, bebíta..”
Sunday giggled in response to her mothers weak comeback, she knew her mother was struggling to carry her and it was hilarious. Wednesday always carried herself like she was untouchable and perfect but here she was— lagging behind on their little hike.
“Honey? Are you alright back there?”
Enid called from up ahead, looking back at the two girls— was Wednesday seriously sweating? Enid fought the urge to laugh.
Wednesday glared at her wife half-heartedly.
“We’re perfectly fine.”
Still, seeing the distance between them? Enid decided to stop for a second and let them catch up. She knew her werewolf strength was an advantage and that Wednesday was probably secretly envious of said advantage.
It took some time but eventually Wednesday and Sunday caught up and when they caught up— Wednesday made the decision to change their little arrangement. She took Sunday off her back and opted to carry her on her hip.
Sunday didn’t mind, she giggled throughout the transition and hugged Wednesday’s neck when she was seated on her hip.
“Mama’s old.” Sunday teased.
Fang tried not to giggle but couldn’t help it.
Enid wouldn’t deny that Wednesday was sorta acting like an old woman, it was pretty funny but still she loved sleeping in their bed and didn’t wanna be exiled to the couch later that night so she did her best not to laugh.
“Your mama is far from old.” Wednesday defended herself, “Simply.. just less..” Her eyes traveled to the side and glanced at her wife’s exposed, muscular arms, “Physically inclined.. as others.”
The she-wolf took the opportunity to flex just to mess with her wife only to be met with an annoyed blushed face— God, Wednesday was far too cute for her own good sometimes.
“Not too much further, grumpy.” Enid giggled, leading her wife and children a little father up ahead until they came to a big clearing.
Once in the cleaning, where the full moon above shined brightly down on them, both Wednesday and Enid knew they only had a few minutes to explain what was going on.
Tonight would be special..
It would be the first night that Enid ever showed her children her wolf form.
Sure, Sunday and Fang knew their mommy was a werewolf but they had never seen it. They had just turnt five and both women had decided that it was an appropriate time to introduce the twins to the sight of her form.
One big thing Wednesday and Enid wanted to strive for was that they didn’t want their children to be afraid. Werewolves were a part of their blood, just like humans were.
At the time, no one knew if either of the twins were gonna be a wolf or not. Only time would tell. Yet, Enid was and tonight? They’d see it..
“Help mama unpack, yes?” Wednesday finally set Sunday down and gently instructed the twins on how to lay out the blanket in the clearing and set up the food.
Fang was eager to help like always. He had no idea what was going on but he was happy to be there with his mothers and sister.
Enid was a little anxious. She could feel it in her bones a transformation was coming.
Above them, the full moon was still covered with a few clouds but they’d pass shortly.
“Babies?” Enid spoke up— ready to explain. “You know mommy has a special power..”
Sunday and Fang were now seated on the blanket on either side of Wednesday— looking over curiously and confusedly as Enid spoke. Wednesday wrapped an arm around each of them, pulling them close to her sides, sitting in the middle of the two young children.
“You’re a big doggy?” Fang guessed.
“With razor sharp teeth.” Sunday added.
Wednesday let herself smile the ghost of a smile at the innocent commentary of her children. They really were polar opposites.
“Yes.. and yes.” Enid nodded, “Well.. tonight? Your mama and I—“ She said, “—we thought we’d show you what I look like.. as a werewolf.”
Honestly? They weren’t sure how the twins would react to the news. Instantly Sunday was on board with the idea of seeing something different, new and maybe even a little scary. Meanwhile, Fang appeared a little distressed.
“Hell yeah!” Sunday celebrated.
“Sunday..” Wednesday and Enid said in unison— both immediately correcting her use of profanity.. where did that word come from?
The little girl was too hyped up to care.
“But.. you..” Fang mumbled, a little nervously. He looked away and fidgeted with his fingers.
Enid frowned at her sons clear anxiety. She was worried about this.. she looked at Wednesday with concern. Fuck— he was scared, what were they gonna do?
Wednesday saw the silent look and took over the conversation for the time being.
“Take a breath.” Wednesday said to him, kissing the side of his little head, “What is it?”
Fang took a second, breathing and calming down form his initial fear and nervousness.
“Does it.. hurt mommy?”
Oh.. this sweet boy.
He wasn’t scared of seeing a werewolf. He was scared of seeing his mommy in pain.
Enid immediately felt better.
It was one of her biggest fears that her children would ever be afraid of her. Hearing this? It just made her heart swell a little.
“Oh, no baby boy.” Enid chimed in, reaching out and cupping his little freckled cheeks, “It doesn’t hurt mommy anymore.. not really.”
Wednesday nodded, playing along.
“Mommy is strong. She’ll be okay.” She added, helping her wife to sooth their little boy.
Learning this, Fang was more relaxed and most certainly alright with the idea now.
Shortly after the announcement was made— it was time. The clouds above had moved east and were no longer blocking the clear full moon. So, Enid took a few steps away from her wife and children, giving herself space to allow the inevitable change that was coming.
She always got a tingly feeling in the tips of her fingers when a transformation was close.
Enid basked in the moonlight, exhaling and shutting her eyes tight— feeling her bones begin to snap and her limbs begin to grow.
As her body changed, Wednesday and Sunday watched with identical looks of awe.
Fang quickly covered his eyes and hid his face into Wednesday’s side. He couldn’t watch this part. Wednesday didn’t make him. She just silently held him close and rubbed his back without looking away.
The full transformation only took around a minute and when the change was complete? Enid stood on her wolf’s hind legs and let out a very loud, ear piercing howl. She couldn’t help the instinct. It happened every time.
“Beautiful..” Wednesday commented under her breath. Her wife was a hairy beast with razor sharp teeth and claws. She was perfect.
There was a tense moment of silence that fell shortly after the transformation. Until a certain little girl’s excitement got the best of her.
Sunday stood up when her mother had finished transforming. She was beyond enthralled by the new sight!
Fang anxiously uncovered his hidden face and moved away from Wednesday’s side just a little. Okay.. that wasn’t too bad. His mommy was just a really, really big dog. Yeah, no big deal at all he tried to tell himself.
Enid, in wolf form, could no longer verbally communicate with her wife or children. So, she dropped to all four legs, walking over and crouching down to seem less intimidating.
Wednesday moved from her sitting position to stand up, pulling Fang up with her and keeping him a little bit behind her just so he didn’t feel too far out of his comfort zone yet.
All the while, Sunday wasted no time approaching her mother in her beast form. She showed no sign of fear or distress.
“Mommy..” She giggled, running up to her.
Sunday held her little hands out and stood in front of Enid. The wolf was blonde— no longer having blue and pink highlights in her fur. Over the years, Enid had grown a lot and so had her wolf. She towered over her little family.
Enid knelt down further and her huge nose nuzzled Sunday’s outreached hands. Her ears flopped and her tail wagged happily as her daughter bursted into another fit of giggles. Hearing her children laugh was always instant serotonin. The twins had identical dimples to Wednesday whenever they laughed or smiled.
“So cool..” Sunday commented with genuine happiness, squealing as Enid’s nuzzling turnt into licking at her with her huge tongue.
Fang heard his sister laughing and watched Enid play with her. Sunday seemed okay.. alright.. maybe this all wasn’t too bad?
Wednesday slowly turnt and picked up her son, not moving too fast to scare him. She picked him up and brought him close to Enid’s form, showing him it was okay. It was all safe.
“Mommy would never hurt you. See? It’s alright..” Wednesday reached out and gave her wife’s huge furry snoot a gentle pat. “You mustn’t be afraid. There’s no reason to be.”
Enid melted into the touches like a big touch-starved puppy, tail still wagging and everything. Fang watched and observed for a few more seconds, before he couldn’t help the smile that spread on his face.
Slowly, Fang reached out to give his mother a pet too and Enid obviously let him.
“Mommy.. can you play fetch?”
Of all things their son could’ve suggested? Of course it had something to do with her wife turning into a huge puppy.
Wednesday pretended to hate it.. but deep down? She secretly loathed herself for loving the display.
For the next hour or so? The twins and Enid switched between games.
For awhile, it was a good game of fetch.
Each twin would take turns throwing a stick, watching as their mother caught and returned the stick with ease. That game died pretty quickly though as the stick would get broken or get way too slobbery. Wednesday personally ended that game when said slobbery stick accidentally touched her.
Then? The whole “piggy back riding” was taken to a whole new level when Enid let the twins ride on her back and she ran through the woods around the clearing.
All the while Wednesday stayed on the comfort of the blanket and kept watch over the snacks, just observing her family being chaotic.
Call her paranoid but watching the twins ride on her wife’s back and nearly fall multiple times made her a little anxious. Damn.. since when did she become such a helicopter mom?
The sound of their children’s happiness and giggles was something both mothers wanted to always remember. As they grew up? Their laughter would too. They wouldn’t always be so innocent and pure. Their growth was inevitable. So, they’d cherish it.
It was what happened next that made the night take an unexpectedly grave turn.
The next events were what made both Wednesday and Enid long to forget it all..
After an hour of rough housing, Enid finally laid down beside the picnic blanket, panting like a dog and trying to rest up a little.
It was getting late but none of them wanted to head in just yet. So, they stayed and Wednesday let Fang lay his head in her lap whilst Sunday laid against her other mothers furry wolf body, nuzzling into her.
They were talking about innocent things— such as school or hobbies. Sunday liked archery, Fang was interested in music, both twins were doing well in school too.
But all that innocent small talk and bonding was interrupted by the sound of a twig snapping— shortly after? Enid growled, loudly and stared off in the darkness of the woods behind them.
Hearing her wife growl in front of the twins made Wednesday’s eyes narrow.
“Enid.” She said lowly, sharply.
Wednesday wasn’t a wolf so she couldn’t smell what Enid did and naïvely figured the growl had came out of instinct or something random— so she got on her for growling in front of twins for what looked like no valid reason from her human point of view.
Enid had locked eyes with something though and she didn’t break contact, even when Wednesday spoke to her.
After realizing her werewolf wife wasn’t letting up, she let her own gaze follow Enid’s and finally— she saw what Enid saw and her blood ran cold within seconds.
Meters away, standing in the darkness was an orc.
They were dangerous, unpredictable creatures that lived in the woods and came out at night in search of food. They ate anything that moved and had no concept of emotion. All they thought about was their next meal.
The orc itself was huge and hideous. It stood tall— much taller than Enid’s wolf— and was bald and a grayish blue color with a set of dark yellow, sharp teeth that ranged in size.
Wednesday had read about orc’s before and knew to move slow. She knew to stay calm but how was she supposed to keep her children calm? There was quite literally a monster in the woods just a few meters away.
Enid let out another growl, louder this time. This growl sounded more feral.
Not once did Wednesday’s eyes leave the beast. The orc let out a guttural groan, it was loud and monstrous. Wednesday knew it was some form of calling. The bastard was calling more of its friends. In just a few minutes? They’d likely be surrounded..
Wednesday watched her wife stand up and slowly moved in front of them.
By now, the twins had caught onto to the fact that something was most definitely wrong.
“Mama.. what is it?” Sunday asked, getting up from where she’d been. She’d been sitting close to Enid, now she moved to Wednesday.
“Shh..” Wednesday shook her head, reaching over and gently but firmly pulling her daughter close to her, her other arm going around her son. “Stay quiet and still, keep close to me.”
Sunday didn’t understand.
What was happening? Why was her mommy growling? Why was mama holding her so tight?
Regardless, she kept still.
Fang held onto Wednesday tightly and as more orcs began to appear from the tree line, that’s when the little boy finally laid eyes on the monsters himself— finally, realizing the danger they really were in.
His eyes widened and a strangled gasp left his mouth. Wednesday acted fast and moved to cover the boys mouth, trying to muffle the noise but to no avail.. the sound had been heard. Wednesday wasn’t mad, she could expect no less from a terrified five year old.
The orcs ranged in size and shape but some of them were big and threatening. Some of them even had makeshift wooden weapons.. but all of them were hideous.. and hungry.
Very, very hungry.
“Enid..” Wednesday wished desperately that her wife could verbally communicate. She wanted to know what the plan was— wanted to know what was going on in her head.
The wolf obviously could say nothing, but she looked over her furry shoulder— locking eyes with her wife as the orcs let out horrid battle screeches and began to charge..
Her primal, beastly eyes said it all.
Enid wanted her to run.
Take the children, seek shelter.
Wednesday didn’t want to. Despite being a mere mortal, she knew she’d be able to handle her own. She wanted to help Enid and not leave her wife here to fend for herself..
But the twins..
She shut her eyes and felt her jaw tighten as the weight of the decision sat heavy in her chest. They needed to run.. right now.
There wasn’t even time for a goodbye.
“D-don’t you dare die in battle, mutt.”
Wednesday tried to keep it together and did a pretty good job but there was still a shake to her tone that she accidentally let slip.
If Enid possessed the ability to do so in her form, she would’ve met her wife’s words with a smirk.
She wouldn’t die.
Sunday too noticed the orcs around the same time Fang did— her breathing hitched and she gripped Wednesday’s shoulder. Not a lot scared the little girl.. but she was only five.
As the beasts charged them, Wednesday picked Sunday up, along with Fang.
The little girl quickly realized they were leaving without Enid and of course, began to protest.
“No! Mommy! We can’t leave her!”
Fang wrapped his arms around Wednesday’s neck, burying his face in her chest. Tears of fear began to seep out as he hid. He heard his sister began to cry and scream which only made him more upset. He was terrified.
“M-mama! Please, go back!”
Wednesday didn’t answer her daughter. She only tightened her grip on the little girl when she felt Sunday punching at her shoulder, clawing at her and trying desperately to break free to run back to Enid.
The sounds of the wolfs snarl and the orcs attack echoed through the woods as Wednesday took off running.
Sunday’s fussing came to a small halt when she suddenly felt frozen with fear— watching as the orcs swarmed and attacked her mother, circling and lunging from different angles.
Wednesday wasn’t the strongest person— not physically— but she ran as fast as she could while carrying both her children.
“Your mother will be fine.” Wednesday forced herself to say, making an attempt at reassurance when they far enough away.
God, she wanted desperately to believe that.
Enid was strong.. she’d faced a Hyde.
Yet, that was years ago and it’s not like this was only one orc— it was many and no matter how strong she was, Enid was only one wolf.
Yet, Wednesday wouldn’t dare fret.
Not in front of their children. She swallowed and suppressed the lump in her throat and kept running. The sound of leaves and twigs crunching under her boots filled the air.
Sunday let out small cries into Wednesday’s shoulder, seeming to have given up in her attempts to get away, simply succumbing to the sadness she felt in her chest. She wanted her mommy— she wanted Enid back with them. Fang wasn’t any better off, he hadn’t looked up once since they started running but hearing all the sounds of anguish and battle where enough to make him stiff.
Wednesday ran until she physically couldn’t anymore and had to have at least ran a mile, at least she hoped she’d put that kind of distance between them and the battle.
Her lungs burnt and her legs begged for rest. So, she— with a heavy sigh— let the twins down from her hold and kept them close. She leaned against a nearby tree and felt herself covered in her own sweat. She felt disgusting.
“W-why’d we leave mommy?” Fang asked, being placed on the ground. He stood beside his other mother and gripped her pant leg, “How i-is she gonna find us, mama?”
Wednesday dismissed his worries and woes.
“Your mother is a strong woman, Fang.” She said, through labored pants, “If there’s anyone who can win that battle, it’s her..”
Again.. if only she could believe herself.
She wasn’t the type to lie, not even to her children— especially not to spare their feelings or to make them feel better. Wednesday believed in blunt honesty even when it came to her parenting and although her words were yet to be confirmed as lies.. she didn’t feel like she was telling the truth either, unfortunately.
It was as if her words came with a nasty aftertaste each time she practically promised Enid’s safety. Reality was? She couldn’t guarantee anything.. and that was terrifying.
Fang nodded at his mothers words but his tears were still present. Sunday came to Wednesday’s other side and had a somber expression on her face. There were tears in her eyes too but she said nothing.
Wednesday then took the time to pull both of the twins close to her in a tight embrace. She normally didn’t like to be the one initiating physical contact but this time? She made an exception considering the circumstances.
“Both of you, pull it together.” She said softly but seriously— planting a single kiss to each other their foreheads, “I’m here. You’re safe. Your mother will join us soon.. we’ll go home.”
The twins exchanged glances and as best as two five years old could in their situation, they did their best to pull it together..
Wednesday didn’t know how long she and the twins stayed there— in that same position, huddled up close beside a tree. They stayed there and waited. Waited and listened. Listened and.. prayed. Hoped. Longed all for Enid to be okay. To join them soon..
But that never happened.
Enid never arose from the clearing in the woods. She never let out a howl in the distance to let her wife know she was okay.
It had been over an hour since the orcs appeared and since they’d separated.
Wednesday didn’t want to think of the worst outcome but as more time passed, she had to be realistic.. and the reality of the situation was beginning to really weigh on her.
Enid..
She might not have made it.
And the harsh, cruel reality was?
Enid probably hadn’t made it.
It hurt so bad to admit that, even just internally. Wednesday wanted to be stubborn and wanted to be optimistic for once in her life.. but how could she when the odds weren’t in her favor? She had two little children to protect. She couldn’t just go off in a search either. It was a hopeless losing game.
Wednesday remained seated by the tree. By now, she’d taken off her coat and had given it to the twins to share as a blanket. The night was already chilly but as it got later it only worsened as temperatures dropped.
Both twins snuggled into her sides. Sunday on the left and Fang on the right. Neither of them could close their eyes and sleep. It felt impossible. Wednesday didn’t blame them.
“Mama..”
Fang’s little voice broke the silence.
“Yes, darling..”
Wednesday hid the growing devastation in her tone well, putting on a front that she still believed Enid was okay.. when she really didn’t. No.. not anymore, unfortunately. Too much time had passed for there to be a happy ending. Enid.. probably wasn’t going to be coming back.
“When’s mommy coming back?”
His voice was innocent. His eyes were unknowing and still full of hope.
It shattered Wednesday’s black heart. So much so that she had to break eye contact. Something she never did with her children.
Sunday didn’t say a word. She knew.
Only five years old and she knew. Her mommy was more than likely gone. Her mama was trying to keep it together but the walls she’d built up to give them shelter were falling..
They were breaking down.
Fang didn’t like not getting an answer.
His little heart began to race as he devastatingly began to put the pieces together; Wednesday’s somberness, Sunday’s silence, the fact that Enid hadn’t come back yet..
No.
No..
Fang shook his head.
“Mommy’s fine, isn’t she?” He asked.
Wednesday couldn’t look at him. She only tightened her grip on each of her children, bangs fell in her face as she looked down.
N-no answer. No response.
A large lump began to form in the little boy’s throat. Why wasn’t he getting an answer?
He didn’t like not getting an answer.
“Y-you promised!” Fang suddenly said— much, much louder than before. “You lied!”
Wednesday only looked up now to quiet him. She had no idea where the orcs that were still alive were and noise would only attract them.
“Fang, silence..” She spoke lowly, seriously.
He shook his head. Fang was sobbing now. Sunday tried not to cry either but she couldn’t help it. Her tears flowed silently instead as she buried her face into her mama’s shoulder.
“Where is she!? She’s not dead! I want mommy!” Fang said hysterically, “Mommy! Please, come back!”
Wednesday didn’t know what to do.
She moved her arms out from around each of the twins and reached forward. She tried to put a hand over his mouth again— from behind— she swore she could hear a twig snap— but Fang was having none of it, being too frantic. He began to squirm against her touch.
Sunday curled into herself now that Wednesday no longer had her arm around her. Her tears felt warm against her freckles cheeks, she remained silent as her brother went through the horrid realization that their mommy was probably gone. Probably dead.
“Fang, I beg you, be quiet! The monsters will hear you!” Wednesday pleaded, trying her best..
But it wasn’t good enough.
The next thing that happened.. happened all too quickly.
It may be hard to believe but everything leading up to now wasn’t even the worst of it. What was about to happen is something that still haunts even the likes of Wednesday Addams to this very day. What happened next still gave Wednesday nightmares. Bad nightmares. Not the kind she enjoyed having.. horrific nightmares.
She was preoccupied with Fang, trying to get him to both calm down and be silent.
Sunday was off to the side, unprotected because she no longer had an arm around her like she had.
Wednesday’s back was turnt and both her hands were on Fang. She didn’t see the monster approach them from behind and the sounds of Fang’s crying blocked out any indication that a lone orc was even close by. These factors meant she didn’t have time to act or prepare..
All she heard was her daughter’s scream.
A horrific, bloody, bone-chilling scream.
Wednesday always liked hearing those sounds. To her, they were oddly soothing.. but there was nothing soothing, or even close to it, about that scream.
An orc, the biggest, most ugliest, one out of the whole army of them, had hunted them..
He’d found them.
And now? He had Sunday.
The orc had came up behind the tree they were hiding behind— his huge shadow ominously covering them in a new shade of darkness— he’d reached down and picked Sunday up by the hood of her coat like it was nothing.
It really was nothing to such a beast.
And for the first time in her fucking life?
Wednesday Addams felt helpless.
“Sunday!” She cried out. “No!”
The mother then immediately pulled Fang into her chest, a hand of hers moving to the back of his head to shield him and to keep him close. It was all she could do..
Sunday struggled and kicked, squirmed and fought as best she could but she was just a little girl in the clutches of a monster. What damage could she do?
Wednesday felt the foreign feeling of a lump begin the form in her throat as she watched the display in front of her closely. She slowly stood up, holding Fang tight.
She’d likely lost her wife already tonight..
Loosing a child would likely kill even her.
“Release her and take me, you beast!”
Wednesday’s voice had never been filled with such a venom. In all her years, she’d never been so angry.
The anger she currently felt was almost scarier than anything else occurring. Wednesday felt out of control. She was ready to kill. She always knew she loved her family dearly but she had never been in a position to where she had to protect them all at once.
She was truly willing to die for her children.
J-just like Enid likely had tonight..
Oh, brave, poor.. innocent Enid.
Wednesday tried not to think about it. About how this monster had likely been the one to kill her wife.
It only fanned her internal burning flame.
That thought only added to her rage.
“Let my child go, this instant.” She repeated, “Do as I say or I will send you to the darkest, hottest of hells.”
There was a tension-filled pause.
Then? The beast had the audacity to grab Sunday by the torso instead— squeezing her like some toy.
It caused the little girl to scream out of pain and punch the hand of the orc, trying to free herself.
“Mama!” Sunday cried out desperately. “Mama!”
“No! No! Take me! Damn you! Take me please!”
Wednesday cried out once more, pleading desperately and distraughtly so, taking a step forward out of instinct but then taking a step back cautiously to where she was. She had to be smart. She couldn’t charge a monster, not while she was holding onto the last family member she felt as though she could keep safe tonight. As much as she wanted to fight, she was smart enough to know she was only human. She would not win. She would die. Her children would too.
Fang had been forced into silence. His tears were still falling as he held onto Wednesday for dear life and didn’t dare look up but they fell silently now. This was all his fault wasn’t it? He felt guilty.. all the noise he made must’ve been what gave their location away.
Wednesday’s bottom lip quivered. She’d never been so upset and terrified before. She could handle a lot more than the average person could but not even she could handle what was unfolding in front of her.
The orc had had enough playing with his food. He ignored Wednesday’s pleas and screams and raised Sunday up as high as his lengthy arms would reach. He opened his disgusting, drool-oozing mouth of sharp teeth and was about to lower her in to take a bite..
“N-no! Let her go! Let my baby go!”
Wednesday’s voice cracked for the first time in years.
Sunday screamed once again, clearly terrified.
“Please!”
But.. just as all hope was lost.. just as Sunday was about to meet her demise.. that’s when a new player entered the field, ready for round two from earlier.. They ran out to the scene on four legs and were covered in fur, ready to punish the beast for daring to mess with their mate and pups.
Enid Addams.
Wednesday watched in both horror and relief— in both awe and fear— as her wife pounced into action, standing in front of her and Fang. She stood in between Wednesday and the beast that had their daughter.
“E-Enid..” Wednesday said breathlessly.
The wolf looked back at her mate. She was covered in blood and yet, still gave her a softer look. It wolf’s could smile? Enid was definitely sending her a fangy smile.
She was given intense déjà vu from all those years ago back in Nevermore. The night in the woods Enid had come and saved her from Tyler’s Hyde.
Now, here they were decades later with their own family and Enid was still coming to save her when needed. She was still giving her that soft look.
Everything went full circle.
Enid had suffered a lot of damage from the battle beforehand. Her wolf form was battered and beaten to hell. A chunk of her left ear was gone and her wolf appeared to be limping pretty bad on her right side.
Wednesday wanted to check on her.. she wanted to run to her and make sure she was okay— but this monster still had their daughter and Sunday was first priority.
The shorter girl tightened her grip on her son and felt her heart drop as the orc once again squeezed Sunday. That bastard was hurting her! Her little body couldn’t take that kind of treatment! He needed to let her go!
“Enid!” Wednesday said again, her tone fearful.
Her tone said it all; their daughter needed help.
Enid was on it.
She turnt back to the beast and snarled dangerously, predatorily, practically foaming at the mouth.
Finally, the orc got the message. He gave Enid his attention instead, figuring a wolf would be a much better meal than just a small, scrawny child anyways.
The orc proceeded to throw Sunday as if she was nothing. He threw her into a nearby tree and she hit the bark, sliding down onto the leave-covered ground, unconscious from the hit.
Wednesday’s eyes widened, a shaky hand leaving Fang’s head to cover her mouth. She felt a single tear roll down her face as she immediately ran towards her daughter.
Enid was here now. She could afford to run over.
“Sunday!”
Wednesday set Fang down but kept him close. She crouched down to her daughter, looking her over intently and gently for any sign or form of injury.
Sunday was breathing. She was alright. Her heartbeat was steady. She’d just been knocked unconscious and her small body sustained a few bruises.
“Amor.. mama’s here, stay with me.” She cooed, failing to hide the shake to her voice at this point. Wednesday moved to cradle Sunday against her chest, pressing a small kiss to her daughter’s freckled forehead.
Enid, even in wolf form, was just as concerned for their daughter as Wednesday was. The werewolf turnt her head to look at her wife, cradling their daughter and keeping their son close by. Her ears were bent back, a whine suppressed in her throat. She walked over, leaving the beast high and dry for the time being.
Wednesday held Sunday tighter as Enid came over and sniffed Sunday’s head with her large black nose.
“She’s okay, Cara Mia.. perhaps, a concussion at most.” Wednesday said, but then glared deathly behind her wife’s form at the beast who had done this. The monster that had dared to hurt one of their pups.
Enid turnt back around after checking on her family. She was an apex predator but even then, she always hunted and killed with mercy when she had to.
But not right now..
Mercy was the last thing on her mind.
Her eyes narrowed and she snarled a snarl not even Wednesday had ever heard before. It was as ferocious and monster-like as any other beast in the forest..
Enid was a kind creature with a pure heart but at that very moment? She attacked without a single lick of hesitation. Her paws took off before her mind could even register what was happening. It was like Tyler, all those years ago, when she’d fought to save Wednesday’s life.
Now? She wasn’t just fighting to save Wednesday.
She was fighting to save her whole family.
Enid wolf’s was fast and had the agility of the wind. She was swift and light on her paws. She dodged many hits and did a lot of damage herself.. but it’d be a cruel lie to say the orc wasn’t stronger than her. Of course, he was.
The orc put up an astounding fight.
He, at one point, had nearly snapped Enid’s neck. He hit her with rocks and beat her with his fists.
As much as Wednesday enjoyed the sight of blood, even she had to look away— it was her wife on the receiving end of those deadly blows, after all. Never had Wednesday felt so useless and helpless as a mere human. If she could, she wouldn’t have hesitated to jump in and help her wife. She wished she could’ve.
Why hadn’t she had a vision that predicted this would occur? Her one girl hadn’t even came of use..
The fight between the two beasts lasted a whopping ten whole minutes before a victor reigned superior..
Enid delivered the ending blow of their messy bloodshed. Her already blood-stained muzzle ripped into the orc’s throat once she had him on the ground for the finale time. The sound of ripping flesh filled the air— followed by a mighty, loud howl of everlasting dominance.
Throughout the fight, Wednesday shielded both their children, covering their ears and hiding their faces in her body, trying to protect them from the sight.
It was a gruesome sight no child should see..
But Enid had won.
They could go home now, couldn’t they?
“Enid..” Wednesday finally spoke, after the battle ended. She was confused as she watched her wife..
The blonde was walking— limping— away.
“Hey, Enid! Where are you...” Wednesday started to ask, but her words trailed off as Enid walked far out into the distance— now, she only appeared as a speck.
She wolf looked over her furry shoulder once she was far enough away and Wednesday felt her heart drop..
The wolf proceeded to collapse.
Wednesday couldn’t see it well, but she could see it enough to know Enid had fallen down.
Immediately, she got up.
“Mama?” Fang whimpered, taking hold of his sister and laying Sunday’s head in his lap.
“Stay here and watch your sister..”
It wasn’t a request. Fang knew better than to protest.
The little boy nodded and looked down, creasing some of Sunday’s dirty blonde bangs out of her face.
“O-okay, mama..”
Fang longed for both Wednesday and Enid to come back soon.. he wanted Sunday to wake up. He just wanted his family to be back together and happy again.
Was that too much to ask for?
“Enid, where are you?!”
Wednesday was running yet again tonight. Leaves continued to crunch under her shoes and twigs snapped.
She had taken off in the distance Enid was last seen and was currently searching for her but it was at times like this when all of the forest looked the same in every direction. Typically, the thought of being lost in such a dark place would excite Wednesday but right now?
It absolutely did not.
“Cara Mia, answer me!”
Enid did not answer..
But the sound a familiar whimper did catch her attention.
Wednesday’s head snapped in the direction of the sound and surely enough? Her dark eyes landed on Enid’s battered, beaten and bloody, now human, form.
“Oh, God, Enid..”
She ran to her wife’s side, falling to her knees beside her, quickly going to shrug off her light zip-up jacket she’d had underneath her trench jacket from earlier.
Enid opened her mouth to say something but no words came out— instead.. only blood spilled out..
Her wounds were far from good..
“Shhh.. don’t speak, I understand..”
Wednesday tried to remain calm. She wrapped Enid’s hurt, bare body in her jacket the best she could. Her heart practically broke in half when she heard her wife cry out a strangled cry of pain at the movement.
“I know, I know..”
And before she knew it?
Wednesday Addams was crying..
She hadn’t cried in years. Yet, here she was.
Enid’s face was completely covered in blood and scratches. Her neck was darkly bruised and her torso was in far worse shape than anything else.
The blonde was loosing blood rapidly.
Wednesday moved to cradle her in her arms.
“H-hey, hey..” She sniffled, “Enid.. honey, please, you stay with me, okay?” A small sob, “Please, mi loba..”
Enid wheezed in response..
A shaky, bloody hand reached up to cup her distraught wife’s face. One of her broken nails creased the freckles she loved so much.. the same freckles that had been passed onto to their two adorable, innocent children.
The thought of never seeing her children again hurt Enid’s dying heart so much. She felt her own tears form.
Suddenly, everything made sense..
Wednesday realized that Enid must’ve known she was going to die. It’s why she forced herself to walk so far away— so Sunday and Fang wouldn’t have to see it. The reason she stood so still and looked back?
It was supposedly her last look at her family..
That realization made Wednesday sob harder.
The sobs that left her were raw and guttural. She’d never cried like this before— not once in her life.
It was awful. She felt as though she couldn’t breathe. The pain she was currently feeling— her wife dying in her arms— it was unlike any pain she’d ever felt before.
“Enid, please..” Wednesday choked out. She didn’t even sound like herself anymore, “I.. need you..”
Wednesday Addams never wanted to admit it.. but she did need Enid in her life. In her dark, twisted, scary reality— Enid was her light and her joy. Her reason.
The mother of her children.
Enid was supposed to be here.
“Y-you did so good..” Wednesday praised in between inevitable sobs, “Y-you always come and.. save me..” She rested her forehead against Enid’s bloody forehead, “I.. I need saving a lot, don’t I? It’s r-ridiculous..”
She desperately tried to joke.
Enid wanted to— but she couldn’t laugh. All she could do was give Wednesday a weak, shaky smile.
“W.. ens.. day..”
Enid managed to sputter out.
“I’m here.” Wednesday sniffled, “I’m right here, mon amor.. you’re not alone.. I’ve got you, okay?”
All Enid could do was nod as her eyes began to get heavy but she was afraid to close them. She was scared she’d never open them again. Never see Wednesday again.
Through the tops of the trees? Both women could hear the song of birds. The sky above was a beautiful orangish, pink. It was a gorgeous sunrise.
And as Enid laid there in her wife’s arms— her breathing getting heavy and vision becoming blurry— she realized that this was a good way to die. In the love of her life’s arms, watching a beautiful sunrise, knowing that both of their children were safe and were going to be okay..
It was tragic.. but perfect, in it’s own way.
“I..” Enid gasped suddenly, “I.. don’t..” Each word took so much energy out of her, “..like the d-dark..”
Wednesday’s bottom lip shook, tears still pouring down her face. God, those words were like salt in the wound.
Enid was scared.
“Oh, amore mio, shh, shh..” She shook her head, planting a kiss to Enid’s forehead. “It’s not dark.. there’s no darkness, I promise.. I swear.” Wednesday looked out towards the sunrise, the colors glistening off her teary eyes perfectly, “Look.. l-look out there, it’s beautiful.. it’s almost as beautiful as you are. You see? See the colors.. Enid, you.. you love those colors, don’t you?”
Wednesday would truly say or do anything to make her wife feel better in that very moment. However, it became apparent that her words could only do so much..
“T-those are your favorite colors..” She sniffled, “You a-adore obnoxious shades of pink.. orange.. yellow. Anything. Anything bright.. isn’t that true, my dear?”
When her looked back down at her wife after not getting a response for a good while, tearing her eyes away from the sunrise, she.. saw that Enid had become still.
The blue eyes that she fell in love with all those years ago were left open. Blood still trickled out of her mouth. The hand that had been on her face fell limply to the side and.. that’s when Wednesday knew..
Enid was gone.
“No..”
Wednesday didn’t want this to be true.
“No, Enid.. please..”
She tried to shake her a little, but Enid’s eyes remained open— staring at the sunrise like instructed. Her body only limply reacted to the shaking, moving slightly.
“Oh, no, no, no..” She refused to believe this, “Enid, my baby, my l-love.. wake up, please..”
Wednesday cradled Enid’s body even closer to her own now, her heart breaking as she did. She held her passed wife’s head in the crook of neck and held her. She didn’t wanna let go. She didn’t wanna do anything else but hold her.. that’s all she could do in her current state..
“I love you.. I love you.. please..”
That was the most Wednesday Addams ever cried in her life. The day her wife died in her arms.
“Sunday! No running, seriously.”
No matter what Wednesday told her daughter, it seemed Sunday had other plans she was set on.
Since that night, Sunday had been doing well. She was back to her old, rambunctious and hyper self.
Fang was still very shaken up. He had pretty bad separation anxiety ever since that night and Wednesday had recently enrolled him into therapy because of it.
Wednesday did her best but things just weren’t the same without Enid around their home, keeping everything and, most importantly, everyone in line.
But everyone had to adjust. Change had to happen sometimes in life even when it wasn’t wanted, right?
Fang walked alongside his mother. A stuffed wolf plush and a bouquet of flowers in the other.
Wednesday was too preoccupied with making sure Sunday didn’t stray too far away to carry anything aside from the basket of snacks she’d brought.
The building was lively and smelt of chemicals like all hospitals did. Wednesday always loved hospitals..
Though this time was more bittersweet than anything.
Sunday led the way through the ward, her baby doc martens hitting the tiled, checkered floor rapidly.
She knew exactly where she was going!
Wednesday couldn’t contain her and blamed it on the eagerness to see her mother— definitely not on the sugar-filled lollipop she’d gotten from the receptionist.
“What are we going to do with your wild sister?”
A rhetorical question Fang didn’t have an answer to.
All he could do is giggle up at his mama.
The pair lingering behind Sunday made their way into the all-too familiar hospital room they’d been visiting everyday for weeks now. Never a minute late.
Enid was propped up in bed with pillows. Weeks ago, she was hooked to countless machines and was even on life support at one time, but now? Only a single IV and heart monitor were needed at her bedside.
It was massive improvement.
Sunday had already made her way onto her mommy’s bed and was currently snuggling with her.
“Oh, my baby girl..” Enid sighed, her voice raspy and still weak after the attack, “Mommy missed you so..”
Sunday nuzzled her blonde mother, giggling.
“Mommy, you can talk again!”
Due to the damage, Enid’s voice had been nearly inaudibly hoarse for the past few weeks.
Enid smiled, “Yeah, exciting, isn’t it?”
It was.
Fang came into the room soon enough and he too made his way up onto the bed, claiming a spot on the other side of his mother, snuggling into her instantly.
“Hi, Fang, sweetheart, oh my boy..”
Enid planted kisses all over his head and made sure to give Sunday her fix of smothering as well.
They were twins, it was only fair.
“For you, mommy..”
Fang offered his mother the bouquet of flowers and wolf stuffed animal they’d picked up from the gift shop.
The flowers were orange and pink— like the sunset.
“Wow, thank you, my babies. These are perfect.”
Enid smiled big and accepted the gifts, using it as an excuse to snuggle and kiss all over her children once again. Not like she needed an excuse to do so.
Wednesday took a moment to stand in the doorway, admiring the sight of her family. The family she never thought she’d have as a gloomy teenager.
Oh, if only her sixteen year old self could see her now.
She walked over and leaned over the side of the bed, planting a kiss to Enid’s new scars and right on her soft lips— savoring the warmth and comfort of them.
“Hey, Willa..” Enid greeted, “You look pretty..”
Truthfully, Wednesday looked exhausted but that still fell under the category as beautiful in Enid’s book.
Wednesday gave her wife a faint ghost of a smile.
“I dearly missed your voice, Cara Mia..”
It had been a long few weeks.
But things were finally looking up.
Enid had her arms around the twins. The stuffed wolf plushie was on her lap and the orange and pink flowers were sitting on the nightstand, lighting up the room.
Wednesday pulled up a chair to her wife’s bedside and set the picnic basket in her lap, opening it up.
The smell of sandwiches, fruits and homemade jam filled the air. It put all the sugar free jello and chicken broth Enid had been eating the past while to serious shame.
“I figured it’d be an appropriate time to finish our family picnic that was rudely interrupted before, no?”
The twins spared each other a glance and were happy to nod and agree. They loved having picnics anyways!
Enid smiled big. Her usual, bright smile.
“I’d like that, Wens..”
