A Quirk is an Intimate Thing

Summary:

Bakugo and Uraraka get hit with a Quirk on patrol that swaps their Quirks. Now they have to learn how to live with an unfamiliar Quirk while waiting—and hoping—for the effects to wear off and their Quirks to swap back. It seems simple enough—Uraraka has to learn how to control her sweat production and explosions, Bakugo has to learn how to navigate in Zero Gravity and not get nauseous. They're two pros, they can handle this.

But spending so much time together starts to get confusing.

Chapter Text

KATSUKI

Katsuki stormed up the stairs and down the hall to Uraraka’s apartment, raging at being a fucking errand boy. If Uraraka would just answer her damn phone, Kamui Woods wouldn’t have sent him to track her down.

He pounded on the door and waited impatiently for her to answer. “Cheeks!” He hollered and pounded again. A second later an unfamiliar man opened the door. “Who the fuck are you?” Katsuki demanded without missing a beat.

“Excuse me? Who are you?” The man responded before suddenly the familiar recognition dawned on his face. “Wait, are you Dynamight?!” He asked excitedly.

“‘Course,” Katuski snapped and shouldered past the man. “CHEEKS!” He yelled again once inside her small, sparse apartment.

“Hi, Bakugo!” She greeted casually as she strolled out of her bedroom. “What’s up?”

“Who the fuck is this extra?” Katuski snapped with a nod towards the man that had answered the door.

Uraraka rolled her eyes. “Don’t be so rude, Bakugo,” She said with an exasperated sigh. “That’s my boyfriend, Nakano Hisoka.”

“HAH?!” Katsuki shouted. Boyfriend?? Since when does she have a fucking boyfriend?

“Yes,” Uraraka snapped, “Why are you here anyway?”

“I wouldn’t be if you would answer your goddamn phone. Kamui Woods called us in…well, me because I actually answer my fucking phone.” Katsuki offered up a smirk with the dig.

Uraraka rolled her eyes again and began looking around her apartment. “Where is my phone?” She mumbled to herself.

“You left it on the counter, babe,” the extra said, making his presence known again.

BABE! Katsuki raged at the pet name.

“Yes! Thank you,” Uraraka smiled at him and gently touched his arm as she passed him. The small gesture rubbed Katsuki the wrong way. He’d always wished she would touch him that way. “Oh, here it is!” She picked up her phone and scrolled through the missed calls and texts. “Jeeze, what’s so important?”

“Wisteria was injured this morning, we have to pick up their patrol. Let’s go, Round Face!” Katsuki huffed.

“I have to head to work anyway. I’ll see you later, Ochako,” the extra said and Uraraka skipped over and pecked him on the lips.

“Have a good day, Hisoka!” She called as the extra stepped out the door, closing it behind him.

Katsuki was ready to set the table next to him on fire at the two using their given names. He wanted to call her Ochako.

“Hurry the fuck up, Round Face,” he snapped.

“I hate that nickname,” Uraraka grumbled as she grabbed her bag and her keys before pulling on her sneakers.

“Hah?”

“‘Round Face’ is what you use when you’re annoyed with me.” She shrugged as they stepped out and she locked her door.

Katsuki didn’t know what to say. He didn’t realize he even did that.

“Is Wisteria okay?”

“Unconscious right now with healers working on her. I guess she got knocked pretty good by some strength Quirk,” Katsuki grumbled as they walked. He fumed for a few more steps, his hands shoved deeply in his pockets before he got up the nerve to speak again. “Since when do you have a boyfriend?” He finally asked, feeling his heart clench. He hated that feeling, it made him feel so weak, but after so many years he was used to it.

Katsuki fell in love with Uraraka Ochako the moment he watched her faint from exhaustion during their fight in their first Sports Festival. It was a weird, delayed ‘love at first sight’ kind of moment. He’d noticed her in class before, she was cute after all, but Katsuki had no time for weaklings. But that moment was when he realized she wasn’t weak or frail or anything else some of their classmates had said about her. She was incredibly strong and determined. He respected it. Not to mention she tried to drop an entire fucking stadium on him and almost succeeded. She challenged him in a way he never expected from someone so small with such round, pink cheeks.

Back then he was too much of a pussy to do anything about his feelings and she ended up dating Deku through most of their high school years. That fizzled out within 6 months of them all graduating though. Deku got too busy and put being a hero before Uraraka and she wasn’t going to take that, so they broke up. Katsuki had been privy to the whole thing since he and Uraraka both ended up at Kamui Woods’ agency after UA. Over the last few years, he had watched her go on various dates, but he could never get up the nerve to ask her out himself. Mostly because he knew the answer would be no. They had grown closer in the three years since graduating and were pretty good friends at this point, but Uraraka had never shown any romantic feelings towards Katsuki.

“Seriously, Bakugo?” Uraraka said, bringing him back to the present. “I’m sure I’ve mentioned Hisoka before. We’ve been dating for, like, five months.”

Katsuki made a noncommittal hmph as he thought back over the last few months. Realization suddenly dawned. “Is this that boring PR person from Mirko’s agency that Alien Freak set you up with?”

Uraraka laughed. “Yes, but he’s not boring! I mean yeah, our first date wasn’t great, but I decided to give him another chance and I’m glad I did. We really hit it off.”

“Tch.” Katsuki gave his signature scoff. “Sounds boring to me. A Public Relations Manager?  You can do better than that, Cheeks.”

Uraraka snorted. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Katsuki just shook his head in response. If he answered, he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from spilling his true feelings for her and how incredible he thought she was.

OCHAKO

Bakugo didn’t answer her last question and it left Ochako feeling a little disappointed. He was always good for a pep talk. He was one of the few people that never doubted Ochako’s strength or ability to be more than just a Rescue Hero and never hesitated to remind her.

Ochako glanced over and found Bakugo walking silently beside her, his hands shoved deep in his pockets, shoulders hunched up a little bit, and his face set in a weird mix of pissed off and thoughtful that only Bakugo Katsuki could pull off. It was a look she’d become very familiar with over the last few years, but had trouble pinning down exactly what it meant. She always had guesses, though. This morning she thought maybe he was frustrated he wasn’t actually on patrol yet, since it had been held up by her.

Bakugo stepped up to the front door of Kamui Woods’ agency and yanked open the door before stepping to the side and waving Ochako through. He used to do it back at UA and it startled her at first and made her feel a little uneasy having Bakugo clomp through a door behind her. Over the years—as she got to know him better—she found that Bakugo was a very good person. He could be polite, but chose not to most of the time. He could be chivalrous, or as Kirishima always called it, ‘manly,’ but again, chose not to most of the time. He wasn’t as scary as she used to think back in their first year at UA.

Ochako stepped through the door, smiling at Bakugo. She noticed his harsh features soften ever so slightly before sharpening again. Never one to show much emotion besides anger! She chuckled to herself.

“What’s so funny, Pink Cheeks?” He grumbled behind her as he followed her to the elevators.

“Nothing,” Ochako sang back to him with a smile.

“Bullshit,” Bakugo snapped. “You laughing at me for holding a door open for you? Cause I can stop.”

“Please don’t!” Ochako said as she pressed the button for their floor and turned around to face him. “I like when you’re nice to me.”

Bakugo grumbled something Ochako couldn’t hear as he looked away. She swore she could see a dusting of pink on his cheeks. It shocked her that they had been working together for three years now and she still found moments she could somehow embarrass Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight. Once upon a time, she didn’t think he was capable of being embarrassed.

The elevator dinged and opened, beckoning them into the fluorescent cube. Bakugo leaned against the back wall of the elevator, casually crossing one leg over the other and pulling his hands from his pockets to cross his arms over his chest. The position made his button-down shirt stretch threateningly in all the right places. Ochako quickly looked away before she embarrassed herself thinking about Bakugo’s chiseled body. She remembered how flustered she would get training with him after high school when he started to bulk up.

They finally reached their floor and the doors opened into the main lobby of the agency. They quickly made their way to the locker rooms to change into their Hero suits.

“Tree Fuck wants us in his office to go over the route we’re covering,” Bakugo said as he turned towards the men’s locker room.

Ochako rolled her eyes. “That is our boss, Bakugo,” she called before entering the women’s locker room and wrestling into her pink and grey bodysuit.

When she finished she wove her way through the bustling Hero floor to Kamui Woods’ office and knocked tentatively on the closed door before opening it.

“Good morning, sir,” Ochako greeted pleasantly.

Kamui Woods was seated at his desk and looked up when she entered. “Uravity,” he greeted with appraising eyes. “What happened this morning?” He asked calmly.

“I apologize, sir. I was getting ready to come into work for my patrol, but I left my phone on my kitchen counter, so I wasn’t hearing your calls or texts. I will be better about keeping my phone on my person.”

“Good, because as you know, sometimes you need to come in earlier for a meeting, to cover a patrol, or sometimes you just need to be on call. Being a Hero requires a degree of sacrifice and is not for the faint of heart.”

“I know, sir,” Ochako nodded, solemnly as Bakugo shoved the door open and kicked it shut behind him.

“You seem chipper,” Kamui Woods commented with a smirk.

“Don’t start,” Bakugo grumbled. “Can we get this over with so I can go on patrol?”

Kamui Woods looked like he was going to taunt Bakugo a little more before he changed his mind and briefed them on the patrol route and the incident that injured Wisteria this morning.

As Ochako and Bakugo stepped outside and turned down the street to begin their patrol, Ochako turned to Bakugo.

“What do you think of the possibility of a Quirk enhancing drug?” She asked, referencing the hunch that Kamui Woods had just shared with them.

“Wouldn’t be a surprise. It’s not the first time drugs like this have popped up and the way Tree Fuck explained it, it definitely sounds like a Quirk enhancing drug.”

“We better be on our toes,” Ochako said, curling one hand into a fist and getting herself mentally prepared for battle.

“Tch. We should always be on our toes, Cheeks,” Bakugo mocked.

“Well…yeah. I just mean we should be extra observant.”

“We should always be extra observant on patrol,” Bakugo commented with a smirk as he glanced down at Ochako.

She rolled her eyes. “Whatever, Dynamight. You know what I mean.”

“Sure,” he grumbled a bit sarcastically as they walked down the street.

KATSUKI

They walked down the busy streets, keeping an eye out for any kind of illegal activity. Katsuki hated that 90% of the time, patrols were boring. You walked your route, you helped old ladies cross the street, and then you filled out a shit ton of paperwork back at the office. He wasn’t naïve enough to think being a hero meant he’d be punching villains every day, but he did think the ratio of boring days to villain-punching days would be more even.

As they walked, citizens called out their hero names. Katsuki ignored them, like he always did. Uraraka seemed eager to always smile and wave at every ‘Uravity’ that was called out to her. Katsuki rolled his eyes and glanced down an alley as he passed. Something caught his attention and he paused, taking a few steps back to look down the alley again. There was nothing there, but his gut told him that wasn’t true.

“Dynamight?” Uraraka asked, looking back at him from a few steps away. He locked eyes with her and nodded towards the alley. She nodded back and joined his side once again.

Together, they entered the alley, keeping their eyes open for anyone hiding in the shadows of the alley.

“I told you I saw a fucking hero! Give me some of that shit!” Katsuki heard someone whisper aggressively up ahead of him. It sounded like it was to the right, probably right behind the dumpster that he was about two meters from.

Katsuki nudged Uraraka and she nodded, confirming she had heard it too. They took up more defensive positions as they continued through the alley. Suddenly a man with a Ram Quirk jumped out from behind the dumpster, his body seeming to bulk up and morph before their very eyes. His horns doubled then tripled in size and though his body was also bulking up, it seemed like his horns were too heavy for him and he started losing control as he sprinted at Katsuki and Uraraka.

Katsuki got ready to square off with the villain charging them as he heard Uraraka talking into her Comms to request police backup.

Katsuki lit off a small explosion in the ram’s face as soon as he was close enough. Uraraka had finished calling for backup and now stepped around Katsuki. She reached out, touching five fingers to the ram’s shoulder while he was still off balance, making him weightless before hurling him into the brick wall of the building beside her. She timed it perfectly and tented her fingers, removing anti-gravity as he hit the wall with the full force of his weight. The throw knocked him out.

Katsuki turned away to see who else might be here with them. As he stepped forward, a solid mass flew towards him and hit him square in the stomach before he could react.

“Dammit!” He grumbled as he caught his breath. He looked down at what had hit him and it almost looked like a garbage bag had been compressed into a ball about the size of a volleyball.

Another villain jumped out from behind the dumpster, reaching in and grabbing a bag of garbage from inside the dumpster. Katsuki watched as he smushed it into a solid ball and threw it again. Just like he had assumed. This one was aimed at Uraraka and she easily ducked it, having just watched Katsuki get hit. She made herself weightless and jumped towards the man. Katuski quickly followed suit, lighting off explosions to propel himself forward.

The man kept grabbing garbage bags or other junk from around the alley and compressing it to throw at them. Katsuki and Uraraka closed in and faced off with the man. Katsuki dodged the compressed weapons being hurled at him and used small explosions to keep them from hitting Uraraka. He was trying to act as a decoy so she could get closer to be able to touch him and make him weightless.

Somehow a third villain appeared right beside Katsuki and Uraraka, startling Katsuki. His speed was impressive and he hadn’t shown himself until this moment. He smirked and quickly touched them both. Katsuki swung his fist towards the villain, but he ducked so Katsuki changed tactics. He tried not to light off large explosions when other heroes were right next to him, but he was desperate. He suddenly wondered how many villains they were facing if they hadn’t even known this guy was here. He aimed an AP shot towards the villain and…

Nothing happened.

“The fuck?” Katsuki grumbled to himself. Why hadn’t the villain done anything other than touch them both? The villain laughed and sprinted away from them, grabbing the other guy by the arm, and tugging him along. Katsuki started to give chase before he suddenly felt a burning sensation on his hands.

No, not a burning sensation, he was used to that. This felt like the skin of his fingertips was tearing apart. What the fuck had that villain done to him. He tried to ignore the searing pain in his fingers as he sprinted after the villains when out of nowhere a circle appeared on the ground and a woman’s head poked through the solid ground before disappearing again. The villains Katsuki was chasing both jumped into the circle and disappeared into the ground. Then, the circle disappeared like it was being erased.

“Fuck!” Katsuki shouted. The fucker got away, but at least they had caught an accomplice. Judging by the way his body had morphed and bulked up, his horns tripling in size as he charged them, he must have taken some kind of Quirk enhancing drug. It had clearly been too much for him to handle though and he was easy to take down.

The police were just starting to arrive and slapped Quirk blocking cuffs on the Ram fucker, hauling him into a van, still unconscious.

Katsuki flexed his hand, at least his fingertips had stopped feeling like they were tearing apart. He was about to pull his gloves off and examine his hands when he heard an explosion and a shriek behind him. He whipped around to find a smoking hole in a dumpster and Uraraka standing beside it looking between the dumpster and her hand, shock and fear coloring her features. He ran towards her wondering what had just happened.

“Dynamight!” She shouted, as if she couldn’t hear the volume of her own voice. She turned her hand to face Katsuki and he saw that her trademark fingerpads were gone and a layer of sweat was coating her palms.

“Oh fuck,” he said, pulling off his gloves. His normally sweaty palms were dry and at the tips of his fingers were squishy, pink pads, exactly like Uraraka had always had. Uraraka went to wipe her sweaty palms on her uniform and Katsuki reached out grabbing her wrists, “wait! Don’t do that. I think our Quirks were swapped.”

“WHAT?!” Uraraka shouted. Fuck! She can’t fucking hear. She noticed her trademark fingerpads on Katsuki’s fingers and her eyes widened. “I think our Quirks are swapped!” She yelled.

Katsuki rolled his eyes as he dropped Uraraka’s wrists and started putting his gloves on her hands, careful not to use all five fingers on each hand as he had seen her do all these years. He was suddenly wondering if her Quirk was always active. He had no clue how it actually worked.

“These will help stop you from accidentally exploding anything,” Katsuki said, hoping she could at least read his lips and understand.

“They don’t fit!” She shouted.

“It’s fine,” Katsuki said and turned towards the police before pausing and looking back at Uraraka “Don’t touch anything,” he added, not knowing if she could even hear him, but needing to say it anyway. As a child first learning his Quirk, he had exploded too many things to keep track of. Clothes, toys, his bed, the couch, the list went on. Katsuki strode over to an officer and pulled him aside, keeping a finger raised. “We were hit with some kind of Swap Quirk by a villain that escaped. I need you to put Quirk blocking cuffs on us and take us discreetly back to Kamui Woods agency.”

“A Swap Quirk?! So…Uravity has your Quirk and you have Uravity’s?”

“Yes, that’s why the Quirk blocking cuffs are necessary. Hurry the fuck up before the media arrives,” Katsuki snapped.

The officer scuttled away to talk to another and the two of them hopped in a cruiser and circled the block, appearing at the opposite end of the alley that they were in. Katsuki walked over and grabbed Uraraka by the arm to lead her away, but she started floating in his grasp, her eyes wide as she tented her fingers out of habit.

“FUCK!” Katsuki shouted. Uraraka quickly wrapped her legs around Katsuki’s body to anchor herself and grabbed his hands clumsily in her oversized gloved hands.

She positioned his fingers together and shouted, “think about releasing the zero gravity!”

“That makes no fucking sense!” He shouted back as frustration and nausea boiled within him. How does this fucking work, she’s going to float off into space. Release! Release! Add gravity! Katsuki angrily thought when suddenly he felt Uraraka’s weight return to her body. He had no clue what he’d done for this to work, but he didn’t care. The nausea hadn’t subsided though and he immediately vomited. “Are you fucking kidding me,” he grumbled while Uraraka laughed behind him.

They joined the officers waiting for them. “We have the cuffs,” one of the officers said as they snapped the cuffs on Katsuki and Uraraka.

“Good. Let’s get back to Kamui Woods’ agency. Discreetly,” Katsuki added with a pointed look at the officers who both nodded and helped them into the cruiser.

Halfway back to the office, Uraraka spoke up, finally at a normal volume. “How long do you think this will last?” She asked Katsuki as the officers drove them back to Kamui Woods’ agency. He glanced over with a look of surprise. “My ears finally stopped ringing. How do you manage this all the time?”

“Why the fuck do you think I’m half deaf?”

Her eyes widened for a moment in surprise. Before she collected herself and asked her question again. “How long do you think this will last? Do you think it’s permanent?”

“Don’t know. We need to see if this Quirk was ever registered. Maybe the healers back at the office can make a guess.”

“What if he was using that Quirk enhancing drug?”

“Yeah,” Katsuki mumbled. Start with finding out if the Quirk was ever registered to get a base idea of what the person was capable of. “Hey, go to the back, there’s a loading dock and a service elevator we can take up,” Katsuki instructed the officers.

The service elevator unloaded into a rarely used hallway that just so happened to have a door to enter the office space right next to Kamui Woods’ office. Katsuki managed to pull his badge from a pocket despite being cuffed and swiped them into the office before speed-walking to Kamui Woods’ office. The door was open so he strode in and kicked it shut behind the last officer to enter.

Kamui Woods looked up from his desk and startled at the sight before him. “What the hell have you done now?!” He demanded as he stood up and came around his desk.

“Wasn’t me this time,” Katsuki snapped. “We were hit with a Swap Quirk. The cuffs are necessary. Uraraka blew up a dumpster and I almost floated her into space.”

Kamui Woods was silent for a moment while he processed this information. He finally turned to the officers, “Can you leave the keys for these behind? I’ll return them with cuffs when we’re done. I trust you understand the necessary discretion required right now.”

“Yes, sir,” the officers nodded, and one handed a key to Kamui Woods before they left, closing the door behind them.

“Okay so you currently have each other’s Quirks?” Kamui Woods asked. Katsuki and Uraraka both nodded. “Is that why you’re wearing Dynamight’s gloves?” He asked, turning his eyes to Uraraka. She smiled sheepishly.

“I don’t know why I’m wearing these. I couldn’t hear anything Bakugo was saying to me at the time,” she explained and Kamui Woods’ raised an eyebrow.

“The explosions are loud and hearing loss is a side effect. I put the gloves on her so she wouldn’t get flammable sweat on everything. Do you know how fucking dangerous my Quirk is without control?” Katsuki barked.

“Okay, calm down. I’ll call the medical department. We’ll see what we can figure out,” Kamui Woods said as he sat behind his desk again and called the receptionist. Katsuki and Uraraka sat down across from him. “You said a Quirk swapping Quirk?” He asked, looking over at them after hanging up the phone. Katsuki nodded. “Okay, let’s search the registry, maybe there’s something there.”

One of the doctors that Kamui Woods employed stepped into his office and took in the sight before her. Other than being cuffed and dirty from a fight, both Katsuki and Uraraka were in good shape.

“Thank you for coming to my office, Iwasaki. These two were hit with a Quirk swapping Quirk.” Kamui Woods explained. Iwasaki’s eyes widened.

“So, Uravity has explosions and Dynamight has zero gravity?” She asked as she stepped forward and looked them both over, she moved her hands around their bodies, hovering a few inches from them as her hands glowed, using her Quirk to x-ray them. “No injuries, just the Quirk swap. Can I take the cuffs off to see how the Quirks are reacting within your bodies?”

Katsuki hesitated before looking over at Uraraka, “Don’t touch anything . I’m serious.”

She smirked back at him. “Keep one finger raised at all times unless you want to bounce off the ceiling.”

Katsuki rolled his eyes in response and Iwasaki removed the cuffs to continue her examination.

“There is nothing wrong with either of you. No serious injuries from the fight and no side effects of the Quirks.”

“Other than a lack of fucking control,” Katsuki snapped. “Can you tell how long this is going to last?”

“I can’t. Your bodies aren’t reacting like it’s temporary.”

“I did find a Swap Quirk user. The last time the registry was updated, this individual was 10 years old and could swap two Quirks for up to a week.” Kamui Woods spoke up from behind his desk.

“So, a week?” Uraraka asked.

Katsuki shook his head, “He could have gained more control since then. The person we fought today had to be in his mid-twenties.”

“Right.” Uraraka nodded, “Plus the added possibility that he was on that Quirk enhancing drug. That other villain definitely was.”

Kamui Woods looked between them, “You think you also encountered a Quirk enhancing drug?” Katsuki and Uraraka nodded and Kamui Woods hummed to himself. “It’s possible we have a ring starting up in the area. I’ll have to bring this up with the police. In the meantime, I’m putting you both on leave for at least a week. We’ll revisit at that time and determine if more time is necessary if you don’t have your Quirks back yet.”

“What?” Katsuki roared. “I can fucking work!”

“You said yourself you almost floated Uravity into space. Neither one of you has control of your borrowed Quirks right now and I will not have that liability on my shoulders. Figure out how to survive the next week with a Quirk that’s not yours and we’ll revisit.”

“What if this lasts longer than a week?” Uraraka asked quietly.

“Then you’re on leave longer,” Kamui Woods responded calmly.

“What if we can learn to control ourselves until the swap wears off?” Katsuki asked.

Kamui Woods raised an eyebrow. “If you can learn to control zero gravity, Uravity can learn to control explosions, and you can safely perform your jobs, then yes, I guess you could come back to work.”

Katsuki nodded, accepting the challenge and looked over at Uraraka who was watching him with a look of suspicion. “What are you planning?”

“Let’s hit the gym.” Katsuki smirked back at her.

“You’re impossible,” Kamui Woods sighed, “Dismissed. Don’t ruin my gym.”

“Yes, sir,” Katsuki and Uraraka said in unison as they filed out behind Iwasaki.
