Yes, M’Lord

Summary:

In the Sol Empire, many powerful families exist beneath the Emperor and his family. These other families are often feuding over political gains and territory. There are two factions, the Nouveaus and the Royals. Miguel O’Hara, the loyal guard dog of the Emperor and only Duke of the kingdom, heads the older, Royal faction. The leader of the Nouveau Faction is Count Jon Arakel whose only aim is to dethrone the younger Duke O’Hara from power.
Count Arakel had a daughter, and the young Duke and Emperor devise a plan to keep Count Arakel in his place. The young lady of House O’Hara had no motherly figure, so why not hire a nanny? By forcing the daughter of Count Arakel to become the Nanny of Duke O’Hara’s daughter, they are able to prevent house Arakel from gaining more power by marrying his daughter off. Begrudgingly, the house of Arakel sends their only daughter, a woman sought after by many young, wealthy bachelors to work under the Duke.
Lady Arakel hates Duke O’Hara, and he feels the same about her…but after living together and caring for the same child, do they really hate each other? Or was it just bitter feelings from their families?

Chapter 1: I Hate This Man

Chapter Text

I let a long sigh slip past my lips as I glanced at myself in the mirror, a soft smile sat on my face. I had spent the whole day with Duke Miguel O’Hara’s only child, Lady Gabriella O’Hara. We had spent the morning making flower crowns for each other in the estate’s garden, something she was much better at than me. Lady Gabriella was sweet and was quite the young socialite, in contrast to her father, who abhorred the idea of being around other people–me included– and spent most of his time in his study pouring over documents or with the emperor of the nation. Though he was uptight and always scowling, he was a genius. His sudden summoning of me to work under him as his daughter’s nanny was quite alarming.

I, myself, came from a prominent and wealthy family as well, my father being Count Arakel who was actually a political enemy of Duke O’Hara. The hiring of me was a way to keep my father and his power in check and prevent him from marrying me off to the Marquis’ son. I didn’t understand politics too well, but I didn’t want any part in it. So, when I was summoned to work for the Duke, I fought quite ferociously to maintain my freedom. A freedom that was snatched from me quickly, unfortunately.

I let out another sigh, glancing up at the flower crown adorning the top of my head. Lady Gabriella had given me many over the past week, and I cherished each of them. She was such a brilliant and kind child, I was willing to set aside my distaste for young children and spend most of my time with her. I carefully removed the flower crown from my head and set it on a small, ivory table next to the mirror. Much like the rest of the decorations in the Manor, it was garnished with gold and other beautiful little trinkets. It was over the top, but it oozed old money and power.

I glanced around the room once more, taking a deep breath. I had to head to the Duke’s study to discuss the education plan of Lady Gabriella. Etiquette, the history of the empire, basic math and writing skills were a few of the things I knew I had to cover; however, Duke O’Hara wanted a more advanced study plan since he proclaimed the young lady to be a genius that should not be educated at the same level as other noble children. Though I found it arrogant, I couldn’t help but agree with his view of his daughter after this past week.

I exited my room and made my way towards the Duke’s study. It was easy to get lost in such a large estate, it made my father’s mansion seem like the toy house that Lady Gabriella used to play with her dolls; however, the extensive tours given by the young lady helped me get around easier. Duke O’Hara had also given me a tour himself…a tour in which we quickly learned of our distaste for each other.

I quickly arrived at the study, hesitating before I knocked on the door. Before I could knock, the door opened and the tall, bulky figure of Duke O’Hara stood in front of me, looking down at me. I looked up at him and stepped back, curtsying and introducing myself.

“Good morning, m’lord O’Hara, this humble-,” He held a hand up in my face, signaling for me to stop my greeting. He scoffed and rolled his eyes, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning against the open door frame.

“I already know who you are and I don’t care what else you have to say. Let’s just get this over with so you’ll leave me alone for the next few months.” His tone was flat and held no emotion, if there was any, it was simple irritation.

I understood his frustration and it was a mutual feeling. I clenched my jaw and rolled my eyes as well as soon as he turned his back to me to retreat back into the study. I followed after him, closing the door quietly behind me. He had returned to his seat behind his lavishly large desk before I returned my attention to him. I approached his desk, my hands at my side and my eyes down.

“My lord, I think it would be best if we do in fact give the young lady a more complicated education plan. You were right about her intuitive abilities and her intelligence.” I said quietly, glancing up at him for a moment and taking in his sharp features in the dim candle light.

“I know. I already told you that. Dios mio…it’s like talking to a brick wall.” Miguel sighed heavily and looked up at me through the half-moon glasses he had put on after taking a seat. After a moment, he returned his gaze to the numerous documents sitting in front of him, busying himself with work.

“Then I’ll make a plan for the young lady and send it to you for approval.” I muttered bitterly as I turned away from him and started to make my way towards the door.

“What a royal pain in the ass…” I said under my breath when I made it to the door. Before I could open it, a large hand slammed against it just above my head. My breath hitched in my throat and I glanced over my shoulder. There he stood, leaning over me and looking down at me menacingly in the dim light. His shadow covered me completely, shrouding me in darkness.

“What was that, Ms. Arakel? Did you have something to say?” His breath was hot on my face, I could tell he was angry. It made a shiver run down my back and a scowl quickly made its way to my face.

“My apologies, my lord. I was not aware you could hear me! I seem to have offended your honor, Sir…however could I make it up to you…?” I retorted sarcastically, practically spitting my words at him.
He let out a curt laugh, using his free hand to pinch the bridge of his nose and shaking his head. I could tell he was beyond just irritated by how his shoulders rounded and his eyebrows furrowed. I gulped quietly, suddenly regretting my sarcastic tone.

“If you just do what I say…” He paused for a moment, sighing heavily once more and removing his hand from above my head. After what seemed like an eternity, he continued to speak.
“I’ll pretend this transgression didn’t happen as long as you keep Gabi happy. You really are testing my patience, you’re lucky you’re a fantastic political advantage for me.” He grumbled as he withdrew from his position behind me, returning to his position behind his desk.

I nodded meekly, trying to avoid his incredibly cold gaze. I failed to voice a response quick enough as I turned to open the door.

“Answer me, niñita.” His tone was stern and I could feel his burning gaze on my back. It felt threatening, and made me feel inferior.

“Of course, My lord. Thank you for your forgiveness.” I quickly stepped out of his study and stealthily closed the door behind me, hoping Miguel was satisfied with my response. I quickly made my way down the hallway, making it back to my room and shutting the door behind me. I slid down the door, back against it and I hugged my knees and let out a shaky breath.

I hate that man. I hate his house. I hate his personality. I hate his goals. I just hate him.

He’s lucky he has a cute daughter.
