Work Text:

A small, delicate fingered hand pushed the curls back from Sona’s face, fingers skimming along the edge of her Gearbreaker eyepatch.

Coal eyes met brown, and Eris sighed, winding her fingers in the other girl’s hair.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“I do.” Sona said, leaning her head into the warmth of Eris’ palm. “It is the only way.”

“You’re not some tool to be used, Glitch. You’re-”

“Human?” Sona felt her lips twitch in some semblance of a smile, as much as she could in the moment. “You know that’s not true, Eris. I am a tool. I was made to be one. A blade they could pluck off the shelf and wield how they saw fit.”

Eris scowled, tugging her hair harshly. “You’re not theirs, Sona. Not anymore.”

“Which is why I’m doing this. I’m the only one who can.”

“We can find another way.”

Sona paused, staring calmly into the Gearbreaker’s eyes, seeing the rage she saw so often in herself, hardly buried beneath the surface. “You do not want to, though.”

Eris flinched.

“You want them gone, just as much as I do. It is like Jenny said.” Sona bared her teeth in a grin, her eye wide and probably a little manic. “I am a weapon.”

“A weapon to be used against Godolia.” Sona said.

Eris let go of her hair, roughly untangling her fingers and pushing herself away. Her fists clenched, and the scar on her forehead stretched into view as she scowled deeper.

Sona pressed her back to the wall of Eris’ bedroom, watching the other girl pace, and spoke again. “Do you know what the Windup’s are named after?”

Eris stopped pacing, throwing her a confused glance before resuming. “Gods, I presume.”

“Children’s toys.”

At her words, Eris froze in place. “What?”

“There used to be a kind of toy, before the wars, where you could put a small key in it’s back and wind it up. Once wound, it could speak, walk, play music.” Sona’s hand drifted to her right arm, fingers skimming over the groove in her skin. The panel. Gingerly touching her very own Gearbreaker tattoos.

“Godolia took these toys, and made them into weapons. Killing machines. Something that once brought so much joy, instead designed for destruction. They were not the first, no. But the difference is…” She grimaced. “A person always has to wind up the toy for it to work.”

“Glitch-”

“I am not the Windup, Eris.” Sona said. “I am the key.”

Sona watched as Eris processed her words, her fists clenching and unclenching at her sides.

Eris kicked the bedpost, and cursed.

“I want them to burn.” She said, her voice low and dark.

“With me in that Archangel, they will.”

Eris stared at her, an emotion behind her eyes that Sona couldn’t identify before it was gone.

The air in the room seemed to freeze when Eris took her gloves from her pocket, fiddling with the straps for a moment before she set them gingerly on the rickety bedside table.

“Okay.” She nodded, pushing her now free hands back through her short hair. “Okay. One thing first.”

“You Gearbreakers, always wanting something more.” Sona teased, smirking to disguise the pounding of her heart as Eris stalked closer.

The other girl fisted the front of her shirt, pulling Sona down so they were eye to eye. “Don’t forget, Glitch. You’re a Gearbreaker now, too.”

Eris’ coal black eyes dropped to her lips, and Sona’s heart raced.

Her own breath came out in a huff and she grinned daringly at Eris. “Yes, Captain.”

Eris grinned dangerously back at her. “You’re something else, Sona Steelcrest.”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you.” Sona said.

“Oh, shut up.” Eris groaned, yanking her forward and crashing their lips together.

Sliding her arms around Eris’ waist and pulling her closer, Sona grinned against her lips.

For the Frostbringer, Eris Shindanai was truly full of fire.

And Sona yearned to be burned.
