Four Fools Jumpin' on a Bed

Summary:

What Tooru did know was that while he was in Buenos Aires getting tanned, learning to roll his R’s and playing for San Juan. While Atsumu Miya was there in Osaka with Iwaizumi Hajime getting all lovey dovey and rubbing his stupid, stinky Miya juices all over him.

And this was simply not okay.

And it definitely, one hundred and ten percent, without a doubt was not because Atsumu and Hajime being all cute with each other sent a lump down Tooru’s throat and released a case of butterflies into his stomach.

That wasn’t it at all.

In fact, that didn’t happen.

Tooru doesn’t know what you’re talking about.

OR: The sequence of events leading up to sakuatsuiwaoi's getting together.

Notes:

guys between the time that i procrastinated on this, the time i actually spent writing it, and underestimating how long it was going to turn out, this took me literal months to write. Like, i started this in January. This is my contribution to pride month, don't ask me for anything else

on another note: I am actually already working on 2 other fics.

This is my oikawa tooru playlist, its what i listened to throughout writing and based a bunch of parts of this fic on. have it. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/11bca8hJXoN8xzo3GLbVIL?si=cc8dfbe9a05e4e7e

Edit: should I rewrite this monstrosity

Chapter 1: I. Return of The Grand King

Chapter Text

IT BEGAN WITH A PICTURE AND SUBSEQUENT THREATS OF MURDER. One in which was sent to the Oikawa Tooru at what was, for him at least, the ass crack of dawn. It was a picture of Iwaizumi Hajime, an athletic trainer. Also known as longtime friend and crush of one Oikawa Tooru. Leaning into Hajime was Atsumu Miya, member of Japan’s “Black Jackals”  and old friend of Tooru’s. In the photo, Atsumu was depicted leaning into Hajime’s space and pressing a kiss to the man’s cheek. Hajime only looked to be exasperated.

This incriminating image was sent to Tooru Oikawa from Atsumu Miya with the caption, “with this cutie” And an unnecessary barrage of winky emojis. Tooru woke up to said message, having it been sent at five in the afternoon Atsumu’s time, Tooru didn’t receive it until he woke up two consecutive hours later at seven in the morning his time.

Oikawa Tooru’s long running, everlasting, vomit inducing puppy love for and pathetic crush on his best friend was apparent to everyone he knew. This much was obvious, this much Tooru knew. The only person who seemingly had a hard time understanding Tooru’s not-subtle-at-all feelings was the one he had feelings for. Iwaizumi Hajime.

Iwaizumi Hajime, however, was not an idiot…Hajime definitely knew. He was hyper-aware of it even. This, Tooru did not know.

What Tooru did know was that while he was in Buenos Aires getting tanned, learning to roll his R’s, and playing for San Juan, Atsumu Miya was there in Osaka with Iwaizumi Hajime getting all lovey dovey and rubbing his stupid, stinky Miya juices all over him.

And this was simply not okay.

And it definitely, one hundred and ten percent, without a doubt, was not because Atsumu and Hajime being all cute with each other sent a lump down Tooru’s throat and released a case of butterflies into his stomach.

That wasn’t it at all.

In fact, that didn’t happen.

Tooru doesn’t know what you’re talking about.

Then: Tooru sent it again. He wasn’t sure why. Maybe it was like how in the movies people try to show the murderers that they have lives so that the murderer feels guilty and won’t kill them.

Iwa!!1

Maybe that was just how Iwaizumi Hajime showed his love. Tooru shunned himself for a moment because despite being called shitty, a loser, and a brat (Read; lovingly.), Hajime always felt like home for Tooru.

“Atsumu.” Hajime says while clicking his phone off and setting it on the bench. It was dark outside by this time, their large gymnasium was lit by the bright, overhead lights that shone a dim yellow down on them. “Stop fucking with Oikawa and get to work.”

“I a’tually have no clue what yer talkin’ ‘bout, ‘jime.” And the faux blond gives Hajime a smile with a fake innocence lacing it. “I’m literally just sexting ‘Omi right now.” Hajime groans loudly halfway through Atsumu’s sentence.

“I didn’t need to know that, Miya.” Then: “If he’s feeling well enough to keep up with your sorry ass then tell him to get his sorry ass over here. Tomorrow.” Kiyoomi was currently away from practice as he sprained his ankle while trying to receive a new serve Atsumu was trying out. He got sick shortly after. Atsumu found it all very amusing.

Atsumu shakes his head in faux disapproval. “Always need somebody to be mad at.” He mumbles. Then he turns to Hajime with a grin as dark as the night. “What’d Tooru say to ya?” Hajime turns back to look at him with an unimpressed gaze, he’s standing then and stretching his arms over each other.

“That you were being mean.”

“Figures.” Atsumu smiles at his phone, “Dontcha figure you’re the real one bein’ mean, Iwa-chan?”

Hajime glares briefly but replies with a quint, “No.” Iwaizumi Hajime has perfected the art of deadpan delivery. No one does it quite like him. But, he doesn’t shake Atsumu off when he idly messes with the end of his shirt, leaning over on the hand he has stationed on the bench. Hajime crosses his arms.

“Hmm.” Atsumu hums, straightening out and switching his phone back on.

“What?”

“Hm.” Atsumu to Hajime hums again. He’s focused on his phone now. Hajime wondered if he really was “speaking” with Kiyoomi. He refuted that almost immediately. Atsumu was as much of a dumbass as ever. Almost as big of a dumbass as Tooru.

“Why are you ‘hm’ing me?”

“Mh.”

“I’m walking away.”

“Mhm.” Hajime doesn’t move an inch. Relenting, he sits back on the bleachers quickly, next to Atsumu.

“He asked if I missed him.” Hajime tells the other man. Atsumu smiles like he won.

“Do ya?”

“Who doesn’t.”

To: DO NOT REPLY

At least youre self aware.

Oikawa Tooru thought Sakusa Kiyoomi was kind of cute. Not Iwaizumi Hajime cute but his own brand of cute. Either way, Tooru could understand Sakusa Kiyoomi’s appeal. This Miya Atsumu and Oikawa Tooru saw eye to eye. Atsumu liked Kiyoomi more than Tooru did, however. Tooru spent his days thinking of how to rile up Atsumu’s bones.

From: DO NOT REPLY

To: you

Finish the heart kusa chan

Image.attached

Tooru sent a picture of his hand. His hand was pretty; tan and lithe and two of his fingers were curved into half of a heart. Kiyoomi received the photo from him at two in the morning and saw it later at nine in the morning along with his usual barrage of texts from Atsumu Miya and a few others from the team.

From: you

To: DO NOT REPLY

What are you getting at

From: DO NOT REPLY

To: you

Just finish the heart!!!

Sakusa Kiyoomi sent back a half-assed photo of his own hand doing the other half of the heart, his tiled kitchen floors in the background. Tooru still sent it to Atsumu.

The message was sent attached with a picture of Tooru smiling with his tongue out and holding up a peace sign with his index and middle fingers. Despite the innocent look and tone of Tooru’s message, when Hajime received it at five in the afternoon and saw it just moments later, it sent shivers down spine and made his stomach drop.

From: you

To: my dumbass

Tooru

What are you going to do?

And please dont say something stupid

Tooru responded with another picture. This time it was of a plane ticket. One from Buenos Aires to Osaka. One that left too soon for Hajime to do anything to stop it. One that was undoubtedly too expensive for him to even think about stopping it.

From: you

To: my dumbass

Twenty four hours ago, Iwaizumi Hajime couldn’t imagine how good it would feel to have Tooru in his arms again. To be able to smell him, and feel him, and see him, and to just know that he was there was something that he hadn’t realised he’d taken for granted all those years. Until now. Now that he had Tooru against him for the first time in years.  He stayed up all night trying to imagine what it would be like but nothing came close.

Hajime had his arms wrapped around Tooru’s waist, and Tooru around his shoulders. They stood there, in the overcrowded Osaka Airport, where they were probably being very rude and they didn’t give a damn at the same time. Because here he was. Tooru Oikawa. In his very flesh. Hajime leaned in, laying his head on Tooru’s shoulder and sniffling into his neck and he thought in that moment that he wasn’t very sure how he’d let go of Tooru the first time. And he wasn’t sure how he was supposed to let go this time.

He couldn’t imagine it. He hoped Tooru couldn’t either.

“Did you miss me, Iwa?” Hajime didn’t answer but he rubbed his nose into the warm skin of Tooru’s neck and it was all pretty obvious. Tooru’s extraordinarily quiet for a moment, but he’s tightening the hold he has around Hajime’s shoulders and sighing wetly. “Haa. I missed you too.”

Hajime releases Tooru but holds a death grip on his shoulders as he pushes him back to look at his face. “You are so stupid.” He gripes, “You can’t just leave in the middle of the season. Especially so close to the olympics.” Tooru smiles wearily.

“They don’t need me. I’m leaving for Japan anyway.” He sticks out his tongue. Hajime doesn’t care, he wouldn’t admit it but, he doesn’t. He’s pulling Tooru back in for a moment. Tooru sighs with a giddy smile and he wraps his arms around Hajime’s neck. “I missed you too, Iwa-chan~”

Hajime drops his hands from Tooru’s waist and moves to wrap one arm around his shoulders and scuffle him forward. “Let’s go.” Hajime tells him, he reaches over and pulls Tooru’s suitcase out of his grasp and pushes it himself.

“Iwa-chan, such a gentleman.” Tooru coos, he obnoxiously rubs his head against Hajime’s shoulder. Yup, annoying on purpose, like always. If there was in doubt in Hajime mind that this was actually Oikawa Tooru, there wasn't anymore.

“Actually, I was planning on holding it very loosely so that if someone tried to steal it, it would be an easy feat.” Hajime deadpans, “It’s a shame, all that Armani down the drain.” Hajime smiles towards Tooru then and he gasps, scandalised.

“Iwa-chan! I’ll have you know that is a harmful stereotype.” He tells him. “And I’m more of a Brioni kind of man.” Hajime scoffs. He then punches Tooru lightly in the side.

When they get to Hajime’s car, Tooru climbs into the passenger seat and Hajime into the driver's seat. As they are settling in and getting buckled up, Hajime asks, “Where are you gonna stay?” Tooru sighs as he clicks his seatbelt in.

“Probably with my mom.” He says, then he turns to Iwaizumi was a meek smile, “Or I was thinking, ya knowww...” Hajime starts the car and puts it in reverse to back out of the parking space, hand on the headrest of the seat Tooru was in.

“If you want to stay with me, just ask.” Hajime mumbles while twisting to look out the back window. He turned around to the front once they were successfully out of the parking spot without hitting anyone on their way.

“My dearest, beloved, cutest, most caring, sweetest, nicest, Hajime?”

“Tooru.”

“Please let me stay with you so that I don’t have to stay with my mother.”

Hajime gasps saying, “Tooru!” Mocking the thing Tooru does with his own voice. “You should love your mother.”

“Iwaaa.” Tooru whines, “Pleaseee.”

“I never would have said no, Loserkawa.”

“So, you’ll let me stay??” Tooru puts his hand on Hajime’s shoulder.

“Yeah. Whatever. You can sleep in the guest room if Kuroo isn’t already in there when you go to sleep.” Hajime tells him. Tooru smiles giddy, turning forward.

“I don’t mind cuddling.” He says and Hajime chuckles.

“I’m sure Kuroo won’t either.” Hajime tells him, “There’s always someone there, though. Usually one of my boys. They think ‘hey since its four am and I have a headache let's go to Iwaizumi’s to see if he has some magical cure’.” Hajime shakes his head, “I swear sometimes.” He trails off.

“Sounds like you love your job.”

Hajime glances at him a second, then turns back to look at the road. “Huh?”

“It,” Tooru stops, “You do this thing where you’re just so tired of something when really you love it. You do it with your mom all the time. Or did it,” He reiterates, “I don’t know. You were always like ‘fineeee mom’ and then three seconds later you’d be hugging her and telling her you love her.” Tooru explains. “I don’t know.” He says again. “You seem to do it with the team too.”

Hajime hums as he’s making a turn. “I never realized that. I guess you’re right.” He says.

They don’t say anything for the rest of the drive.

Tooru Oikawa had no idea what Hajime was talking about when he spoke so dreadfully of his place. Tooru thought it was perfect. Hajime’s apartment was homey. It was warm, a little bare, but welcoming altogether. The walls were a light shade of honey, and the curtains accented it with a navy and almost grey-blue. When you walked in there was the hall and immediately to the left there was a rack for shoes and slippers.

The main room was warm and comfortable. Hajime had a patterned couch that was about the same color as the walls and in front of it was a stand with a TV on it. Tooru found that room to be his favorite for one reason. On the TV stand sat a framed picture of someone who Tooru found to be very familiar. Himself. There were others too. Hajime’s family, Hajime and Tooru both, Hajime’s graduation photos from highschool and university. His PhD diploma was displayed on the wall next to the TV, along with a few other pictures.

It felt like home.

Hajime jumped in front of him the first time he caught Tooru staring, effectively blocking the view. Tooru just called him cute and moved him out of the way to ask about some of the pictures. Hajime didn’t mind telling him then.

There was also another thing that was fun. Free cuddles. Tooru never knew who he’d wake up in bed with. Hajime was right though, it was usually Tetsurou. Which he didn’t mind because at least he wasn’t a kicker. (Unlike Shoyou, who was way too tiny to have that much strength in his little body.)

Tetsurou does grab his ass a lot though.

“Kuroo.” Tooru mumbles.

“Mhh..” The man responds.

“Your hand is on my ass.”

“It’s a nice ass.”

“Thankyou.” Then: “Kuroo.”

“Yeahh?”

“Do you think you could, uh, remove it?”

Moreover, Hajime’s place was fun.

Except, sometimes Tooru would wake up to things like people crying, or panicked voices. Familiar ones sometimes. Like tonight, it was around two in the morning so Hajime was asleep but Tooru was still awake, scrolling on his phone and trying to compel his brain to feel sleepy when he heard some knocks on the door. Tooru stood from where he was laying on the bed and quietly left his room to head for the door and some more, louder knocks came. Tooru was trying to get to the door before it woke up Hajime but he wasn’t sure if he made it.

Tooru opened the door before they could knock again, it revealed one Miya Atsumu. He looked shaken up, shaking a bit and out of breath. “Atsu-chan?” Tooru asks quietly, “What’s going on.” He reaches out for the man and the man tenses up.

“I need to see Iwaizumi.”

“He’s asleep, is it something I can help with?” Tooru asks, “Are you dying??”

“I--um I just, needa,” Atsumu stops because he sees Hajime coming up from behind Tooru in the darkness of the hall, “Iwaizumi.” He starts. Hajime rubs Tooru’s back, telling him silently to move out of the way.

“Atsumu, what’s wrong?” He places his hand on Atsumu’s shoulder. Tooru backs out of the way as Hajime leads Atsumu into his apartment. “Are you feeling sick?” Hajime moves his hand from Atsumu’s shoulder to feel the temperature of the back of Atsumu’s neck.

“No, I...” His voice bleeds into the distance. Tooru closes the door then turns to follow them. “I don’t feel okay.” Atsumu tells him, “Somethin’ is wrong, Iwaizumi, somethin’ feels wrong.” Atsumu looked scared. It churned Tooru’s guts.

“Okay. Just breathe. I’m gonna go get you some water.” Hajime tells him, then he’s looking at Tooru. “Stay with him.” Tooru nods, he moves over to take a seat on the couch next to Atsumu. Tooru puts his hand on Atsumu’s arm to try and ground him.

“What feels wrong?”

“I-I don’t know, it’s just- I have pins and needles all over my body and-and,” Atsumu breathes deeply and exhales just as hard.

“Hm. Are you like, having any weird…senses or anything? Tastes, smells?”

“Earlier.” He tells him, “Like blood in my mouth.” Hajime was walking back with a glass of water and Atsumu says this, Tooru looks up at him.

“He could be having a stroke, Hajime.” Tooru tells him, still rubbing Atsumu’s arm softly, trying to keep him there with them. “Or a seizure.” Hajime sets the water on the TV stand and goes back to Atsumu. He looked terrified.

“What,”

“Okay. Can you lay down on the floor for me, Atsumu?” Hajime asks, voice soft. With creased brows and a shaky breath, Atsumu slides off the couch. Tooru was already on the floor, helping him lay down and waiting to hold his head. Tooru gently props up Atsumu’s head in his lap with shaky hands. Hajime was sitting on his knees by Atsumu’s legs.

“Breathe.” Hajime tells him. “In,” He breathes in for a few  seconds, nodding as Atsumu does the same, shakily. “Out.” Atsumu can’t breathe out without his body trembling.

“Atsumu. Breath in.” Tooru tries, Atsumu looks up at him and follows his notions, Tooru leans forward, getting closer to Atsumu, “Breathe out on my face.” Atsumu blows out his breath the best he could. “Good. Breathe with me.” They do it for the next ten to fifteen seconds, Atsumu still can’t breathe without quivering, however, he’s still able to breathe on his own. Tooru leans back, understanding that it isn’t helping and says,

“Raise your arms to me?” He holds his hands out, Atsumu cranes his head back to look at Tooru and slowly lifts his arms to reach out for Tooru’s hands. He successfully reaches Tooru’s arms and grabs onto them. “Good.” Tooru lets their arms drop, he moves Atsumu’s back to his side and holds his hands.

“What’s your name?” Hajime asks then, Atsumu's attention turning towards him.

“I know my name.” Other than his usual accent and the slight stutter of his nerves, his speech wasn’t slurred and he had no difficulty saying that. “Atsumu.” He responds quieter.  They kept Atsumu on the floor, head in Tooru’s thighs and continued to try and calm him down. It could be seconds to hours before he had a seizure, if that’s what this was.

“Do you usually have seizures, Atsumu?”

“When I was younger.” Atsumu says, “Sometimes. I guess. But I haven't since.”

“Okay.” Tooru rubs Atsumu's head and Hajime holds his hand.

“How about we play a game to calm down?” Hajime asks. Atsumu nods, raising his eyebrows as though to say sure.

Tooru smiles down at Atsumu, “Let’s play Never Have I Ever.” He chirps, “I’ll go first. Never have I ever…” Literal crickets can be heard.

Hajime snorts, “Are you trying to think of something you’ve never done, shittykawa?”

“Shut up, Iwa-chan.” He pulls on his eyelid, “Never have I everrrr... gotten a tattoo.” Tooru says then and he smugly eyes up the tattoos that cover Hajime’s arms.

“You have a tattoo too, Shittykawa.”

“UM.” Tooru chokes, “That doesn’t count.”

“Yes, it does.”

“Fine! Never have I ever gotten a stupid tattoo.” Atsumu put his finger down both times.

“You have a tattoo?” Atsumu asks.

“On my back.” Tooru tells him, “It’s a pirate ship. I adopted a dog that had lost an eye and we named her captain because it’s like she should wear an eyepatch. Yenno.”

“Did she pass?”

“Yeah.” Tooru smiles sadly. “But hey! What stupid tattoo do you have?”

Atsumu is sheepish, “Me and Shoyou got matching tattoos.”

“Of?”

“Each other’s names.” Tooru’s laughter was rambunctious, Hajime’s was quiet.

“Oh my gosh,” Hajime laughs, “Why??”

“Conversation starter.” Atsumu laughs breathily, “Imagine you’re in bed with me and you see the name ‘Shoyou’ on my back. You’d be like ‘whaaa...” Atsumu couldn’t finish his sentence before his eyes were rolling back a bit, his body began to shake erratically.

“Get him on his side.” Hajime immediately said. Tooru was quick to follow instructions, helping Hajime turn Atsumu over to lay on his side as he convulsed. Tooru quickly snatches a pillow from the couch and puts it under his head. Hajime moves to open Atsumu's mouth after he does. He was making sure Atsumu wasn’t biting his tongue.

Tooru moves out of the way as Hajime makes sure Atsumu is not choking and can breathe. Hajime settles after making sure Atsumu is completely okay and lets Atsumu seize. The man continues to shake for a good ten to twenty seconds. Other than its general worry, it wasn’t concerning and Atsumu wouldn’t have to go to the doctor. Atsumu faints after he stops seizing, lying peacefully on Hajime’s floor.

“Let’s move him to the couch.” Hajime grunts as he stands. Tooru stands too then, hand on his hip, looking down at Atsumu and Hajime who was lifting him.

“We should put him in bed.” Tooru offers, “I’ll watch him for the night.”

“Yeah?” Hajime wheezes almost, holding Atsumu in his arms the best he could. “Yeah, let's do that.” Tooru moves out of the way so that Hajime could carry Atsumu into the guest bedroom. The door was still open from when Tooru left. Thankfully, there were no bed bugs (Read: People who like to steal the bed from Tooru.) there that night. Hajime leans over and places Atsumu down on the middle of the bed, taking his arms back from underneath him. Whispering ‘there’ to him as he moves the blankets over top of him.

Tooru goes around the bed and slips in to lay over top the covers next to Atsumu. Hajime sighs and sits on the edge of the bed on Atsumu’s side. He looks at Tooru who was already looking back at him. “You did good.” He says. “Really good.”

Tooru just lays his head on the pillow and looks at Atsumu who was laying against the pillow that Tooru had been earlier. He was asleep, almost peaceful too. Tooru was just glad that the look of fear wasn’t littering his pretty face anymore. “Hajime.”

Hajime hums, “Yeah.” Looking back at Tooru.

“Lie down.” Tooru tells him. “You want to.” Hajime looks back at Atsumu and then does what Tooru says. He moves over the blankets, bunching them at Atsumu’s side and then lies down next to the blonde.

“You ever co-sleep?” Tooru inquires.

“Why would I ever have co-slept, shittykawa?”

“I did it with Takeru.” Tooru tells him with a shrug, “When he was younger. He had nightmares. Bad ones.  Got too nervous afterwards so I’d sleep with him.” Then: “He had seizures too…maybe I'll go see him later.” Hajime is quiet, not asleep but still and silent. He wraps an arm around Atsumu. “Do you think we should take the blankets off him? In case he has another one.”

“It’s cold.” Replies Hajime. Tooru hums. “Just get under the blankets with him.” Tooru maneuvers so that he could slip under the blankets too, the warmth from Atsumu spreading around him. He then moves closer to Atsumu so that he could wrap an arm around him too, his fingers searching for Hajimes back outside the blanket and grappling into fabric there when he finds it. Tooru’s chest is pressed into Atsumu’s and Hajime is almost against his back. And they're quiet like that.

“Neither of us are sleeping, huh?” Tooru whispers. Hajime’s quiet. “Do you guys have practice tomorrow?” Tooru asks afterwards. Hajime nods and closes his eyes.

“Yeah, but I won’t be there.” Tooru hums.

“Wanna come see mom and Takeru with me?”

“Sure.”

“Then go to sleep.” Hajime doesn’t answer because he knows he won’t win. “I’ll watch over him.” He unwraps the hold he had on the back of Hajime’s shirt to flick his nose and whisper ‘sleep’ to him and then tangles the hold right back where it was. Hajime closes his eyes.
