When You Remember

Summary:

Kai has dreams that are more like nightmares. A man torments her in them and she wonders what they may be about. When she received an odd call at work with a woman calling her Rin she follows her instructions to find out who she really is.

Notes:

Hello dear readers. Here’s an odd little story that popped into my head, a Rin/Sesshomaru story where they are secret agents or spies.

I have no idea where this is going so hopefully some of you will join me to find out.

Enjoy!

Chapter Text

”Please, don’t do this!”

”There is no other way.”

”There’s always another way. Please, please.”

“I’m sorry Rin.”

Jarring herself awake Kai clutched the sheet to her sweat clad body. Breathing heavily she sighed in frustration. It was that dream again. In it the fear she felt was unlike anything she could recall knowing.

It pervaded every pore on her skin and left her, in the dream, feeling paralyzed with the knowledge that she was trapped in a corner by a very dangerous predator.

It made her wonder if it were a message coming to her subconscious, a part of herself she couldn’t access reaching out to her from the recesses of her mind.

Reaching for the glass of water she kept by her bedside she gulped down half of it and dipped her fingers into the cup to swipe some across her forehead to rid it of the stickiness the sweat had left in its wake.

Lying down she was too afraid and wound up to rest. She had kept a journal for some time by her bed but didn’t have the mental strength at the moment to write anything down, besides it was always the same.

The space she was in was dark and confining. She was scared out of her wits and she believed to be hurt. There was a man looming over her but his features were shrouded in darkness as he spoke to her, always saying there was no other way as she begged him not to do whatever it was.

The man who called her Rin.

It wasn’t a name she was familiar with, a name she had never heard before but yet didn’t seem unnatural in her dream to be called that by him.

‘Maybe it’s a memory from a past life.’ She thought to herself wishing she had an answer and wanting it to stop.

Dozing off into a dreamless slumber, thankfully, she woke up with her alarm to begin her morning routine.

“Another day, another dollar.” She muttered as she sat up slowly.

Taking her glass with her to the bathroom she showered and dried off, wrapping her towel around herself. Brushing her teeth she rinsed and swiped the mirror to stare at her reflection for a moment. Pulling slightly at the dark circles under her eyes she shook her head, they appeared purple and baggy.

“Maybe I should get a sleep aide.” She said to herself before moving to the bedroom to dress, causally in black slacks and a nice long sleeved top.

Sitting on the bed to brush out her hair she checked her phone to swipe away the work emails that would be waiting for her when she arrived to the office.

Checking her purse in the kitchen she made herself a coffee and dipped her toes into her flat shoes. Pulling her hair back in a low ponytail she wanted nothing more than for the day to be over and she could curl up on her couch to play games on her phone.

Walking the few blocks to work with her coffee cup in hand and her purse secured at her side she mentally prepared herself to be in work mode.

The last thing she wanted to do was smile and play nice all day.

Entering the building she scanned her badge to plop herself behind the reception desk and set up her head set to answer the phones. Tossing her purse under the desk by her feet she set her coffee down and greeted the night security as they let the first few employees in to go to their respective floors.

Turning on her computer and monitor she sat setting to work on company messages and memos, sending them out to the different departments. As the night guards were relieved she smiled and waved at daytime security. Sighing she put her head set on at seven thirty in the morning and began the day.

Greeting people and checking them in to their appropriate meetings, turning people away who didn’t have one. Answering the phone lines and replying to endless streams of emails.

“Thank you for calling Shima group, this is Kai, how may I direct your call?” She answered automatically as she typed.

“Rin, listen to me very carefully, there isn’t much time.” A woman’s voice said over the line. Her heart stopped dead in her chest and her fingers paused over the keys.

“I’m, I’m sorry, there is no Rin here.” She replied shakily.

“Fine then, Kai. Your cover has been blown, you need to do as I say if you want to live.” The woman said sounding impatient.

“I’m calling the cops. We do not take pranks lightly here.” She retorted angrily, was this person threatening her? The feeling she had in her dream began to creep into her stomach and she felt frozen in her chair.

“The police can’t help you Rin. Do as I say and you will be just fine. Do not let on anymore than you already have. You are going to casually leave, just drop your stuff and walk out.” The woman ordered firmly.

“I…I can’t do that.” “You have to, look I promise this will all be explained. Right now you have to leave. There’s a black car waiting for you outside. Get in it.” The woman said before the line went dead.

“Hello? Hello?” She whispered into her head set feeling her throat begin to close on her. Taking it off she gripped her hands together as they shook.

She had never told anyone about the dreams or the name, closing her eyes she felt pinpricks raise goose bumps on her arms as the hair stood straight up on her neck. There was something bad about to happen. Getting up she left her purse and coffee walking out the front door. She heard one of the guards ask her if everything was alright as she exited onto the street.

Parked in front of the building there was a black, nondescript vehicle. Taking a breath she had no idea what she was walking into but wanted answers. If something had happened to her, or this ‘Rin’ person, she needed to understand what it was.

Opening the back door she climbed in and the car drove off. There was a tinted partition separating her from the driver not allowing her to see into the front seat. Knocking on it she received no answer. Sitting back she felt incredibly tired and despite her best efforts she fell asleep.

“You’re coming around. Don’t fight it, just let it happen.” A muffled voice pervaded her unconscious state. Groggily she opened her eyes a crack. “Hey.”

Forcing her eyelids open she tried to sit up only to feel her head swim. “Not so fast, the knock out gas we dosed you with packs a nasty headache.”

“Knock out?” She mumbled.

“Yeah, sorry about that.” Rubbing at her eyes she was able to get a better look at the woman as she sat on the bed she was on. She had dark black hair and round blue eyes. She wore a white top and red pants. “My name’s Kagome.”

“You’re the one who called me.” She answered.

“Yeah, that was me. You’ve been compromised, we had to recall your deep cover.” Kagome said.

“What?”

“I know you don’t remember but you will Rin. Promise.”

“Am I a government agent? Or work for some underground company?” She questioned.

“Sort of. Get some rest, you’ll be briefed soon.” Kagome assured. Standing she went to the door. “I’m really glad you’re back Rin, I missed you.”

When Kagome left the room and closed the door her uneasiness came to her tenfold.

‘What am I involved in?’ She wondered meekly. ‘Maybe this is a dream, if I close my eyes it will end and I’ll wake up.’

Doing so she was grateful it eased the dizziness somewhat as the room was dimly lit and actually fairly comfortable.

“Rin.” Jolting awake she breathed heavily. Her eyes scanned down to the end of the bed to reveal a tall figure standing there.

“It’s you.” She managed out as her throat tightened almost painfully.

“Do you remember me?” The man questioned sounding almost hopeful.

“Get away from me.” She commanded in a whisper. “You…you hurt me.”

“No, never.” Walking closer to her she jumped off of the bed.

“Stay away!” Feeling behind her she felt the wall and pressed herself against it. “Go away!” Pressing her hands to her head she squeezed her eyes shut tightly. “This isn’t real, it’s a dream, this is a dream!”

“Sesshomaru! You shouldn’t be in here. She hasn’t had her memories reinstated yet.” Kagomes voice sounded.

Kai opened her eyes and saw the door open with both of them standing in the middle of the room. Making a break for it she was seized as soon as she exited the doorway.

“Not so fast.” Another man’s voice said as she was grabbed and taken down to the ground. Screaming Kai tried to fight but was not able to with a grown man holding her down.

“We’re going to have to sedate her. Hold her still.” Kagome ordered.

“What hell did you do Sesshomaru?” The man asked gruffly. Kai cried with tears clouding her vision and her nose leaking mucus making it hard for her to breathe.

She screamed until her throat was raw as she felt a pin prick on her thigh. Her entire body became paralyzed and the last thing she knew was that overwhelming fear as she passed out.
