Katsuki watched as Izuku’s face lit up with laughter. He was glowing; contentment brightened his face, cheering as Kirishimi and Kaminari pretended to fight to save Mina from a villain. Izuku’s smile could have blinded Katsuki, his green curls blowing in the light spring breeze. Flowers carried through the wind, showering their class picnic with light pink colour.
Izuku’s arms clutched at his stomach. He giggled as Kaminari’s feeble attempt to lunge for the ‘villain,’ Kirishima, backfired. The greenette wiped away a tear, and placed his arms behind him, sitting cross-legged. Class 3A was situated in a circle, Izuku outshining them all. Blush painted across his freckled face from laughing, he looked like a star. Katsuki felt his heart swell at the sight of his boyfriend.
Then, those green emerald eyes were trained on him. Izuku focused his attention on Katsuki beside him, and gave a soft smile, taking the blond’s hand in his own.
‘If I could begin to be
Half of what you think of me
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love’
Izuku turned his attention away, and took a sip out of his lemonade. He turned to Tsuyu, engaging in conversation like it was second nature. Izuku had flourished when arriving at UA, and now had so many strong friendships he could count on to have his back. Katsuki noticed how he managed to add a splash of happiness wherever he went, leaving people smiling in his wake. Izuku had that effect on people. Oh, but when he was with Katsuki…
‘When I see the way you act
Wondering when I’m coming back
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love like you’
Izuku made him feel special. Like he was loved, like Katsuki was worth being loved.
‘I always thought I might be bad
Now I’m sure that it’s true
‘Cause I think you’re so good
And I’m nothing like you’
Katsuki had been so harsh to Izuku in the past, bullying him when the blond had gotten his quirk and the younger boy hadn’t, and all throughout middle school as well. Katsuki had pushed him down again and again, crushing Izuku’s dream of being a hero. He would tell him he wasn’t worth it, that he was wasting his time, that he should just kill himself. Izuku had to endure the treatment everyday; his classmates ignoring him because of his quirkless status, students making fun of him, Katsuki and his gang knocking him down at every chance. But he kept going, somehow, Izuku alway found a way to keep smiling. And it killed Katsuki. How could someone so defenceless, so powerless, endure and keep pushing through all of it, everyday?
‘Look at you go
I just adore you
I wish that I knew
What makes you think I’m so special’
Izuku was full of forgiveness, care, empathy, and determination. He always made sure everyone had eaten before he ate, always took care of others before himself, and put the happiness of others before his own. Izuku was the most selfless, kind, most magnificent person he had ever met. And Izuku loved Katsuki? Katsuki was the one to feel Izuku’s arms wrap around him and get peppered with his kisses? The one to feel Izuku’s never-ending love, washing over him in tidal waves, as he held his hand and smiled and laughed and cherished and loved Katsuki?
‘If I could begin to do
Something that does right by you
I would do about anything
I would even learn how to love’
Him and Izuku had been together since the end of the war. Their friendship had grown stronger as they healed. Ever since Katsuki had died, the two boys seemed to drift together. They were always beside one another; eating breakfast, comforting each other during nightmares, studying for exams, hanging out in their free time.
Katsuki had summoned enough courage to confess a month into their second year, and Izuku, to the blond’s surprise, had said yes. They were boyfriends, and Katsuki has been feeling so happy since, he and Izuku regret not making up with each other before. The boys are like fire and water, simultaneously igniting their flame, and being the ones to extinguish it to bring their peace. The Wonder Duo, Katsuki and Izuku are each other's weaknesses and strengths, night and day, enemies and lovers. Kacchan and Deku. Katsuki wouldn’t have it any other way.
‘When I see the way you look
Shaken by how it took
I could do about anything
I could even learn how to love like you’
Katsuki blinked. Izuku had turned back to Kirishima and Kaminari, giggling once again at Kaminari who stood victorious over Kirishima, the redhead laying on the ground, Kaminari’s foot planting him down. Mina pretended to swoon for her saviour, and the three students bowed to their audience. Katsuki rolled his eyes, glancing back at his boyfriend. Izuku was looking back at him too, and smiled.
‘Love like you
Love me like you.’
