modern/science fiction au.

Notes:

Hi! I am here to share a different but fun two part science fiction-esque story. No angst this time! well, a little bit. It'll be ok though, I promise. This story is written in a screenplay format, so it might be a challenge to read to first. I think you get used to it as you go! Just a bit of a thing to get used to.

HUGE HUGE shoutout to @nyIondreams for helping me work through this and for being an amazing beta. i seriously couldn't have done it without her!

one note while reading: I use the phrase O.S. pretty often, which means "off screen"! and INT and EXT are referring to "interior" and "exterior" ! if thats helpful.

I had a lot of fun writing this, hope you enjoy it!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

FADE IN:

INT. BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING

The sunlight is just coming through the window of a small city apartment, streaks of faint light crawl across a tiled ceiling. The bedroom is soft and familiar.

LEVI is an artificial human with no need for sleep. He still continues to lie in bed out of habit, and is now staring at the ceiling. He counts the tiles, like he has done so many times before, and is bored.

CUT TO:

EXT. COUNTRYSIDE - DAWN

A MAN stands in the morning fog, pale blue hues of the predawn, the countryside bathed in a soft pink glow. He looks on at LEVI expectantly, disheveled and pale. The MAN moves toward LEVI slowly, with determination. Dense fog hangs heavily around them.

Levi stands in the same bedclothes as in the previous scene, now barefoot and out of place in the countryside. He watches the scene before him unfold, standing with his arms crossed. He is there and not there all at once, though he is not aware nor makes it apparent that he does not belong. The MAN begins to talk, not noticing Levi.

MAN

(To LEVI)

How can I ever make amends for such behavior?

They stare at each other for a second. Birds chirp somewhere nearby. Levi does not recognize Him, though it's somehow familiar.

MAN

(Cont’d)

You must know - surely you must know, that it was all for you.

Levi remains silent. The sky is fully pink now, washing the greens in brilliant hues. The scene continues.

MAN

(O.S.)

[Indiscernible language]

Levi looks around at the scene, turning and inspecting the countryside around him as the man continues to speak. He is not listening fully to the Man’s monologue, but instead takes great interest in the fauna of the dewy grasses.

There is a pause, and Levi turns and looks over at the Man once more.

MAN

(Exasperated)

I could, I would have to tell you, you have bewitched me body and-

BACK TO:

INT. BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING

A series of loud grunts interrupt Levi’s dream. Covers pull tight over to one side of the bed where a SECOND BODY turns over (O.S).

The body gets settled for a moment, and the room falls back to a comfortable silence. The second body sighs. An alarm sounds, coming from the direction of an out-of-reach phone on an adjacent nightstand. There are (O.S.) sounds of fumbling from the other body as it's turned off.

LEVI continues to stare at the ceiling as this shuffle happens, arms crossed over the covers.

ERWIN, a human male, aged 39, is woken by the piercing alarm. He silences the alarm and turns over to face Levi, moving closer towards him. ERWIN does this loudly, lazily, still half asleep. Levi twists his shoulder slightly away from Erwin. He is too loud, much too awake for the early hour.

LEVI

(Groaning)

Hey, Get off me.

ERWIN

(Sleepily, voice uneven)

Shh, hey, c’mere...

Erwin nuzzles his face into the crook of Levi’s neck. His hand drifts under Levi’s folded arms and under the blanket, pawing over and down Levi’s midsection somewhat suggestively.

LEVI

(To Erwin)

What are you doing?

ERWIN

Ju-just...c’mon....

Levi rolls his eyes and lets out a sigh, and turns over to face Erwin. Erwin pulls him closer so they are almost chest to chest. Erwin is taller than Levi, even in bed, and he looks down at him. Erwin’s hair is roused and messy, his eyes still puffy. He blinks awake, looks at Levi, and smiles. It's clear that they are comfortable, domestic, and that they have had similar mornings like this before. They stay like this for a brief moment as Erwin blinks the sleep from his eyes. Erwin yawns.

ERWIN

You know sometimes, I wish you could sleep just so you wouldn’t lay here by yourself staring at the ceiling all night.

Erwin shuffles down a bit and moves his face closer towards Levi, who remains still.

LEVI

Well, what else do I have to do besides listen to you snore?

Levi pushes some strewn hair away from Erwin’s eyes tenderly.

LEVI

(Cont’d)

Anyway, I’m used to it by now.

ERWIN looks back at LEVI softly, his expression soft.

ERWIN

I know.

Erwin looks like he wants to say something more, but doesn’t. Instead, he gently pulls Levi’s hand away from his hair and moves it down to meet his lips, kissing the top of Levi’s fingers.

ERWIN

(Whispering)

Good morning, sweetheart.

CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN - MORNING

It's a little later, the sun has fully risen and is coming through the front windows leading into the kitchen. Erwin and Levi are making breakfast in the kitchen together.

ERWIN

(To Levi, gesturing with a spatula)

Could you pass me the carton?

LEVI

Mmm.

Erwin gestures to the closed carton of eggs on the counter beside Levi. Levi passes them and moves to stand on their side of the stove. He leans against the counter and watches Erwin cook.

ERWIN

So I was thinking...

LEVI

(Under his breath, lightly)

I wished that you wouldn’t...

ERWIN

(Smiling)

Well this isn’t big thinking I promise you. I might head to the grocery store today after my office hours if you’d like to come with me.

Levi cocks a brow, and looks at Erwin with a strange expression. It's clear that this is a weird question for Erwin to ask.

LEVI

You want me to come with you?

ERWIN

Sure, why not?

Erwin removes the pan from the heat and slides an egg onto a plate on the other side of the stove.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

It would be nice to have someone to walk with. Plus, more arms to carry more bags.

Erwin hands Levi his full plate before grabbing his own. They assemble the rest of the meal and settle down at the table to eat together. Erwin knows he's being watched. He looks up from his plate.

ERWIN

You don't have to come with me if you don’t want to, I just thought it would be an excuse to get you out of the house.

LEVI

I mean...I just can’t remember a time you asked me to come with you to the grocery store.

ERWIN

Look, love, come only if you want to. I have classes that run until 12, then I have office hours until 2. You don't have to make a decision now.

LEVI

I mean I'll go with you, I don't mind that. It’s just that...

Levi trails off and stares at his plate. It remains untouched, runny egg yolk still intact in its membrane. He has no need to eat, for he has no digestive tract. Erwin insists on cooking anyway, to have the guise that they are eating together. Another part of their routine.

ERWIN

It’s just what?

LEVI

...I’m not sure. I just don’t think I’ve been there in a while. I find it strange that you’re asking me to go all of a sudden.

Erwin puts down his fork to reach for Levi’s hand.

ERWIN

Lee, it's okay. I'm asking because I want you to come with me. I’m sure you remember the store, you just haven’t had the need to go in a bit. Try not to worry so much.

LEVI

Okay.

CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM - MID MORNING

Levi is seated on the couch in the living room, sipping on a cup of tea while reading a book. Erwin (o.s) is working in his office that is a little bit down the main hall of their apartment with the door slightly open, the sound of his voice filters out.

He always keeps the door closed, or at least mostly closed. Sure, Levi has been inside the office before but it’s not an often occurrence. An unspoken rule. It’s where Erwin has taken to teaching his classes, and so Levi was happy to leave him alone. He can hear Erwin’s voice, though it's difficult to understand what he is talking about specifically.

Levi drops his book into his lap and stares at the slightly open door.

(About the dream earlier)

What did he say about “bewitching your body and soul?” What's that one from...

Drawing a blank, Levi grabs the remote and begins to click through the channels.

Well, it’s definitely a historical romance...fuck,  what is that one?

He starts skimming through the recommendations, trying to find a clue.

Romantic comedies? No...Emotional Drama..maybe? Movies based on books sound right...

Something in some historical countryside...come on...

Before he is able to figure it out, Erwin swings open the office door and walks into the living room. He flops on the couch next to Levi, and stretches languidly. Erwin watches Levi continue to flick through movies on the landing screen.

ERWIN

Can't say that I'm not surprised you’re looking in the historical romance section.

LEVI

Oh, fuck off.

ERWIN

Ooh, Atonement is a good one. Have you seen that yet? It's got Keira Knightley in it.

LEVI

Dammit, how could I forget. That's it!

Levi begins to type out the title as fast as the remote will allow, which is rather slow.

ERWIN

What's it? Were you trying to watch Atonement?

LEVI

No, I was looking for Pride and Prejudice, I was trying to remember a line.

ERWIN

Didn’t know you were such a Keira Knightley fan.

LEVI

I’m really not. I maybe like one or two of her movies.

Finding the title, Levi begins to scrub through the movie trying to find the scene.

Okay it's somewhere in the countryside, there's fog I think.

ERWIN

Really?

LEVI

Yeah I really only liked the remake of Anna Karenina . Mmm, and Never Let Me Go , that was pretty good too.

ERWIN

Really? I liked Atonement a lot. Romance set within the precipice of war? The theatrics are pretty enticing.

LEVI

Yeah, I only liked that green dress really. Anna Karenina has the better theatrics anyway. Hold on, let me listen to this part.

He unpauses the tv, and lets the scene play. (O.S.)

Darcy: If, however, your feelings have changed.

DARCY: (cont' d) I could, I would have to tell you, you have bewitched me body and soul and I love and love and love you. And never wish to be parted from you from this day on.

LIZZIE: Well, then.

Levi lowers the volume but continues to let the rest of the movie play.

LEVI

(Mimicking a British accent)

Well, then.

Erwin chuckles at Levi's bad attempt at the accent.

ERWIN

You have to admit, it is romantic.

LEVI

Darcy just says all this in the middle of this fucking field for some reason and all she says is “well then.”

ERWIN

Yeah, but there's a lot that comes before that.

LEVI

I know, but I still think she could have said something more than that.

ERWIN

Why were you thinking about this one scene from this movie?

LEVI

I dunno, I was just thinking about that line earlier this morning, “you’ve bewitched me body and soul.” I haven’t seen this in a while, I wanted to revisit.

ERWIN

Hmm. It's a good one I think.

LEVI

I think that Darcy is dramatic.

ERWIN

What's wrong with a little bit of drama?

They continue to watch the movie as the characters flaunt around the screen with their newfound love, the volume still on low. Finally the movie ends, credits fading to white text on a black screen. Levi feels bothered by the vision from this morning, but quickly lets it go.

LEVI

(To Erwin)

How was it there?

He nods in the direction of the now-closed door down the hall.

ERWIN

A few students came to office hours this time.

LEVI

Yeah?

ERWIN

Yeah, though it's not that surprising. They have an exam next week, so you know. They always come to office hours to cram right before.

LEVI

Is it a good or bad thing that they come to you?

ERWIN

Good, I think. Shows me they’re either panicking or engaged in the topic. They usually come with very good questions.

Levi turns away from the direction of the tv to look at Erwin. Levi is relaxed, curled on the couch.

LEVI

(Curious)

What were they asking today?

ERWIN

Well..Today, they were asking mostly about the essay portions, and the type of questions I'm going to ask on the exam.

Erwin readjusts his positioning on the couch, and pulls Levi’s feet into his lap.

ERWIN

(cont’d)

Which for this midterm could vary from anything I've covered in the first half of the course. I usually lean toward having the students compare two art pieces together, or ideas, or some connection between multiple cultures. I haven’t decided where I'm going with it yet, I still need to make up for the exam.

LEVI

Hmm, I see. Got any ideas?

Levi likes listening to Erwin talk about art and his classes, he always has some insight to share. Rubbing the tops of Levi's feet, Erwin leans his head on the back of the couch.

ERWIN

I’m not too sure. It's been such a year already so I might make it fairly straightforward. Have them compare a neoclassical piece that references another work from antiquity and call it a day.

LEVI

You’re being a softie, they’ll be fine. Honestly, I think I could get a high score on one of your exams if you handed one to me.

Erwin chuckles lightly in the direction of the ceiling.

ERWIN

Yeah?

LEVI

I think I could, just from the amount of things I hear from you teaching in the other room.

ERWIN

(Jokingly)

Want to be my student now? Well you can take this exam and we can see how you do if you like.

Levi pulls himself closer to Erwin, almost sitting in his lap.

LEVI

Well, I better pass. I am fucking the professor after all.

Erwin smiles and leans down to give Levi a quick kiss on the lips.

ERWIN

We’ll see about that one. How about we take a walk?

CUT TO:

EXT. - CITY STREET - AFTERNOON

It's cold on the city block outside the apartment, it's windy and bitter. The brownstones around them are cast in a warm glow of the setting sun, early for this time of year. The pair head in the direction of the store. The streets are all but abandoned, even in the early hours.

Erwin carries a bundle of folded grocery bags under one arm as they walk together.

LEVI

(To Erwin)

Fuck, it’s cold.

Levi shoves his hands deep into his pockets.

ERWIN

It's supposed to be like this all week, I think.

Levi continues to walk in step with Erwin, but takes time to turn and look up and down the passing block. It looks empty, there's a vacancy even during midday in a central part of the city.

LEVI

There aren’t a lot of people around.

ERWIN

Yeah, well you know.

Erwin slips one hand out of his pocket and gestures to the empty street before them.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

Can't imagine wanting to be out right now.

LEVI

Hmm.

Levi isn’t sure whether what Erwin says has a double meaning. The camera closes in on Levi as he considers this. Pans out to the pair as they eventually pass the camera and up the sloping street.

CUT TO:

INT./EXT. GROCERY STORE - AFTERNOON

The pair wait in a short line to enter the store, which is fairly empty. Well spaced out. The store shelves are still stocked and full, despite the line of people they waited through to enter the store. They move about the aisles together with a small cart.

Levi moves stiffly, feeling a little out of place. He has some memory of the place, but it's vague, like he has only experienced the place from looking at images of the store on a yelp review.

ERWIN

(To Levi)

It’s not so bad, right?

LEVI

Well, it's definitely a grocery store.

ERWIN

Yes but it's our grocery store, the one we always go to. Remember?

LEVI

(Noncommittal)

Mmm.

ERWIN

(cont’d)

Do you still have the list?

LEVI

Well it's not like I could get rid of it.

Levi points to his head, where the grocery list automatically compiles in his mind. Usually, he orders delivery or manually writes it down for Erwin to purchase.

ERWIN

Yes, right. How could I forget? So what's next, list keeper?

Erwin walks slowly, arms relaxed against the bar of the grocery cart.

LEVI

Mm, Bread. Eggs. The usual. Stuff for dinner this week, laundry detergent. The usual stuff unless you want to make something special.

ERWIN

(Bemused)

Something special?

LEVI

Yeah, [shrugs] why not.

Erwin checks an egg carton before placing it into the cart.

ERWIN

Do you have something in mind?

LEVI

Not really, but I can look up a recipe.

Levi looks off for a long moment. Erwin stops to watch him.  His eyes scan left to right like he is reading a page that is somehow invisible, that only Levi can see. Text appears and then scrolls down the screen.

Displaying results for: “meals for two dinner” (page 1 of 29495)

“Comfort food recipes for two”

Next,

“30 super easy dinners for weeknights”

Next,

“Chicken with Spinach in Creamy Parmesan Sauce - An easy one-pan dish that will wow the entire family for dinner!”

ERWIN

(Nervously)

Lee-

Levi stops reading the invisible page, blinks, and turns towards Erwin who appears confused, almost uncomfortable. The text disappears when he looks at Erwin.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

You...don't need to do all that. Let's just keep going.

They pass through the aisles, cart filling slowly with groceries. There are the only ones in the store, and the shelves are perfectly stocked.

LEVI

(Looking around)

It seems dead here.

ERWIN

Well, it is midday on a Thursday.

LEVI

Why did we still have to wait outside then?

Levi points to the main door from where they entered. Erwin shrugs.

ERWIN

It's just what they have been doing to control the amount of people in the stores...limit the size of  crowds. You know.

Levi looks to the main doors again, where a guard stands at the entrance. He looks back to Erwin.

LEVI

I feel like I always see grocery stores packed with people.

Erwin leans against the rail of the shopping cart and continues to push it down the aisle casually.

ERWIN

In movies, maybe. This one is usually pretty empty.

LEVI

(Unconvinced)

Yeah maybe.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT - LATE AFTERNOON

The pair unpack the groceries in comfortable silence.

ERWIN

What do you want to have for dinner tonight?

Levi gives Erwin a knowing look.

ERWIN

(Laughs)

I know, but you could enjoy it! You said something nice, and it could be something fun. A treat.

LEVI

What do you think you whip up with all of this, chef?

Erwin walks over, kisses Levi on the forehead.

ERWIN

I can make it a surprise, but you can't be in the kitchen then if I do it.

LEVI

Perfect, I'll be on the couch.

ERWIN

Sounds like a great plan.

  CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - MINUTES LATER

Levi lounges on the couch while Erwin cooks dinner. Pots and pans clang in the other room, a gas stove clicks on.

Levi clicks through the channels absentmindedly. He falls on  Ratatouille. It's about midway through the movie when Levi begins to watch a rat, named REMY, lead a chef to cook in the kitchen. He watches for a few minutes, and grimaces at the TV screen.

LEVI

(To the TV)

Now who in the hell would let a rat run a kitchen?

ERWIN

(O.S.)

WHAT?

LEVI

NOTHING!

The clattering stops. Erwin enters the doorway after a moment and looks at Levi expectantly. He is now wearing a kitchen apron.

ERWIN

Did you just call me?

LEVI

No, I was talking to the TV.

ERWIN

(Noticing the TV)

Oh, Ratatouille ! This is a great one. In the chef spirit tonight?

LEVI

It was what was on. I really don't see why they have a rat running this place. It's supposed to be a fine-dining restaurant!

A beat.

ERWIN

It's cute.

LEVI

It's gross!

ERWIN

Aw, Lee, look at him!

Erwin points to the tv. Remy is directing the chef around to make a delicious dish.

ERWIN

Let that little rat have a dream to cook. Look at him go!

LEVI

Still. Why does it have to be a rat?

ERWIN

Lee, just enjoy it. It’s good!

Erwin exits the living room and the light sounds of dinner cooking continues.

Remy the rat also continues to dominate in the kitchen (O.S.)

The chaos is compelling, and Levi quickly is entranced by the screen.

CUT TO:

INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DINNER

The restaurants are filled with eager guests, the meals delicately plated and served by waiters in starched black vests. The kitchen is filled with food you could smell through the screen, teeming with life.

Levi stands beside an industrial sink that is stacked high with dirty dishes. All the dishwater matches, it's part of a set.

A RESTAURANT WORKER rushes by and loudly drops another tray of dirty dishes beside Levi.

RESTAURANT WORKER

Hey shorty! Standin’ around lallygagging staring at the chefs isn’t going to clean that fucking stack of dishes!

Levi gawks at him, dumbfounded. He is dressed in a white uniform that is similar to the Restaurant Worker. Similar enough to the ones in Ratatouille.

The kitchen is busy, it's A fast-paced organized chaos. Chefs are calling out orders above the sounds, pans set ablaze. Others are dicing vegetables at lightning speed. Several languages all happen at once, mostly in French.

RESTAURANT WORKER

(Cont’d)

Oi, boy, you deaf or somethin’?

Levi looks at him and blinks.

LEVI

Who the fuck are you talking to?

A door swings open to the inside of the restaurant. It's filled with guests dining under dark lighting, tables adorned with white tablecloths. The doors slam shut.

RESTAURANT WORKER

I'm talking to you , dumbass. Get back to work.

Levi takes a quick glance at the stack of dishes before walking in the direction of the double doors.

RESTAURANT WORKER

(O.S.)

Get the hell back here!

The dining room is like a mausoleum compared to the volume of the kitchen.  Well-dressed guests eat finely plated meals with reverence, there is light jazz playing. It feels sterile in the restaurant compared to the kitchen.

Levi walks around the room, though none of the patrons pay him any mind.

Soon a YOUNG WOMAN who is standing by the front spots him, and tries to flag him down.

Levi ignores her in favor of the odd assortment of people in the restaurant.

The YOUNG WOMAN approaches in a panic.

YOUNG WOMAN

(whispering)

Lee-Lee! Lee, what are you doing out here!

The Young Woman grabs Levi by his arm. She begins to drag him forcibly back to the doors.

YOUNG WOMAN

(cont’d)

What made you think- Jesus Lee, if the boss sees you wandering about the floor he's gonna-

The Young Woman pushes Levi through the double doors.

CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER

Erwin and Levi eat dinner together, the kitchen neat and tidy as it always is, with the dishwasher humming softly in one corner. A train rumbles somewhere distantly. They are both quiet.

ERWIN

Hmph, so what do you think of this?

He points to Levi’s plate with his fork.

LEVI

When did you learn how to make this?

A beat. Erwin’s mouth is full.

ERWIN

Ah, a long time ago. I haven’t made it in recent memory, but it was the first thing I thought of when you said “a special treat.”

LEVI

Hmmm. Yeah it tastes good. The cheese you put on it is nice.

ERWIN

Yeah, it's Dad’s recipe.

LEVI

Oh. Really?

ERWIN

Yeah, it was one that he made on rare occasions, usually when we had guests over.

LEVI

Oh. That's nice. He taught you to make this?

ERWIN

Not exactly. After he passed, I tried to make it for my mother a few times to try to cheer her up. Took a few tries, but it's pretty close to what I think he had in it.

LEVI

Did it work?

ERWIN

I mean yeah, we're eating it now.

LEVI

No, ‘Win, did it cheer your mom up?

A beat. Erwin sighs.

ERWIN

Not really, no. Not in the way I thought it would.

LEVI

How so?

ERWIN

I was hoping that it would evoke some kind of good memory of my father for her, but it usually made her retreat into herself quite a bit. I was young, so I thought I was being helpful. Trying to do a good thing.

LEVI

Mm, yeah. Got it. Reminded her too much of him, I guess.

ERWIN

It would seem so.

They continue to eat for a few moments, but there is a weight that hangs in the room.

LEVI

We should go out in the city and have dinner sometime.

ERWIN

(Chuckles)

Ratatouille inspiring you now to go eat at Michelin star restaurants?

LEVI

I mean, it sounds nice. “A treat”, as you would say.

ERWIN

Yeah, it does sound nice. Surprised you would say that though, considering.

LEVI

Considering?

ERWIN

Considering you gave it to me a little earlier when I suggested dinner in the first place. Considering the eating thing. You know.

LEVI

Just because I can't digest something doesn't mean that I don't enjoy eating it in the first place.

ERWIN

I know I just-

LEVI

What would be so wrong with going out for an evening then?

ERWIN

(apologetically)

Nothing, Levi. It's just, it's not a great time to go out for a nice dinner right now.

Levi squints.

LEVI

Not a good time? I mean I wasn’t saying tomorrow, more as a hypothetical.

ERWIN

No, I know. We can. Like I said it's just-

LEVI

Yeah I hear you. Not a good time.

They eat for a moment in silence. Forks scrape harshly against their plates.

LEVI

Having meals together was your idea, you know.

Erwin places his fork beside his plate and folds his hands.

ERWIN

(Slowly)

Yes, but that was a thing we discussed together. I said it would be nice to share meals, and you agreed with me. Is this not nice?

LEVI

Sure, Erwin. This is nice. Thank you for cooking dinner.

The pair continue to eat quietly.

ERWIN

I wish you were able to meet them.

LEVI

Who? Your parents?

ERWIN

Yeah, if you had met dad. He would have liked you, I think. Honestly, he probably would have cooked this exact meal for you.

LEVI

Mmm. He sounds nice.

ERWIN

He was, definitely. He was a great man. Are you done with your plate?

LEVI

Yeah, sure. Take it.

Erwin takes his plate and moves to the sink to rinse them off. His back faces away from Levi. The apartment is silent, tense, and the sound of the faucet running fills the space.

Levi watches Erwin’s back for a moment, and lets out a long breath. He isn’t sure what to say.

Levi rises from the table and walks around the kitchen towards him, but keeps his distance.

LEVI

I’m going to go shower.

Erwin doesn't turn around. He continues to scrub dishes.

ERWIN

Okay.

CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM - EVENING

Shower water stops running O.S. Erwin sits at the corner of the bed, reading something on his phone. There are sounds of Levi clearing his stomach lining through the closed doorway, toilet flushes.

Levi emerges into the bedroom, and Erwin looks up at him when he enters, towel wrapped around his waist.

Erwin smiles softly at him, and drops his phone into his lap. He studies Levi for a moment.

ERWIN

Hi

LEVI

Hi.

Levi walks to the other side of the bedroom to get dressed.

Cut shot overhead of drawers of the dresser as Levi opens it. It's filled with his clothes, neat and orderly. Everything is organized, folded with machine-like precision. He pulls a pair of underwear from the drawer and slides it shut.

ERWIN

(O.S.)

Where would you want to go?

Levi, facing away, slides the shorts on before turning around to face Erwin.

LEVI

What do you mean?

ERWIN

If we could plan something. A date, a special treat, whatever you like.

Levi leans against the dresser, the damp towel still in hand.

LEVI

I’m kinda over talking about this. You said it's a bad time, end of discussion.

ERWIN

Aw, Lee, don't be like that. I mean yes, we couldn’t go tomorrow, but it sounds like you had something in mind.

Erwin tosses his phone on the bed beside him. Taps his knee.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

Levi, please. Indulge me.

Levi hangs the towel neatly before coming to meet Erwin at the edge of the bed, and half climbs into his lap. Erwin puts his arms around him, and settles.

Erwin tucks some loose, wet hair behind Levi’s ear.

ERWIN

Look, you can tell me whatever you want. Just something, a little dream of yours.

LEVI

You know I don't have dreams.

ERWIN

Look-I know. Aspirational dreams, like something we could do together. You share one and I'll tell you one, how about that.

LEVI

Mmm.

Levi is still annoyed, his body language is stiff and awkward, yet Erwin pulls him in anyway.

ERWIN

I'm sorry if I shut you down, you know I didn’t mean it.

LEVI

Mmm.

ERWIN

Please Lee, for me.

LEVI

Fine. I want to go out.

ERWIN

You mentioned that. You mean like a restaurant, like something upscale?

LEVI

No, I mean it doesn't need to be like that

ERWIN

Okay, give me a vision. Lunchtime or dinner place?

LEVI

Dinner.

ERWIN

Okay, what kind of food? Italian, Japanese, American, blended. One of those gastropubs you’re into.

Levi leans back and scrunches his nose.

LEVI

A fucking gastropub?

ERWIN

(Chuckles)

So no, I didn't think so.

LEVI

Italian would be good. One of those places that make the dough fresh in the mornings.

ERWIN

Oh, I see. That sounds good. Those places with the white tablecloth and everything?

LEVI

Yeah, but I mean the ambiance is not really selling me here.

ERWIN

No, I know. But it's the whole package. Dinner and an experience.

LEVI

Yeah okay. There's those little uh, little tea lights on the table.

ERWIN

Oh, how romantic.

Levi nudges Erwin’s shoulder with his own.

LEVI

Shut up, this is my dream.

ERWIN

Oh yes I know, just teasing you. Please, continue.

LEVI

Well, it's busy in the restaurant. There's lots of people around. It's dinner, so it's pretty busy.

ERWIN

Mmm. Soft music in the background?

LEVI

I mean sure, that can be there.

ERWIN

So this is a nice place. We got suits on, or just something nice?

LEVI

When have I ever known you to wear a suit?

ERWIN

Oh don't give me that, you’ve seen me in at least a suit jacket before.

LEVI

Well, no. I think that we were dressed nicely, but not like a black tie event.

ERWIN

Is this just a nice event? Or are we here for something special?

LEVI

Does it have to be something nice, or can it just be a normal time?

ERWIN

You tell me, this is your dream.

LEVI

Hmm. No, I don't really want this to be an event. We just made reservations for a weeknight, just to go out. Nothing too fancy, but it's still a nice night out.

Levi settles his head onto Erwin’s shoulder, pulling himself into the warmth of Erwin’s body. He speaks half into his chest.

ERWIN

Mmm. I see. We met up at this restaurant after work.

LEVI

Yeah.

ERWIN

Okay, I see.

Erwin pulls Levi's feet across his lap, pulling him closer.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

So it's been a long day, we have reservations at this nice, but not too nice Italian place. We're not dressed too nicely, but there's some ambiance here.

LEVI

Yeah. We each order some meal that's too expensive but we don't care, it's a night out.

ERWIN

(Interjecting)

And we deserve it.

LEVI

And we deserve it. There is a glass of wine involved before dinner, your face gets red like it does before we even eat.

ERWIN

Hey!

LEVI

You aren’t the heavyweight that you think you are.

Erwin takes one hand, lightly rubbing on the outside of Levi's legs. A comforting gesture.

LEVI

(Cont’d)

We eat, and we drink, and I hate the dryness of wine but you enjoy it. The Appetizers are good but the entree is even better. You tell me about your day, and I'll tell you about mine.

Erwin kisses the side of Levi's head, then his neck.

ERWIN

That all sounds wonderful.

LEVI

Yeah, it does.

ERWIN

Do we do dessert?

LEVI

Mmm, good question. I can't eat another thing, the lining of my stomach cavity is fit to burst. You however, can't stay away from the chocolate cake that the waiter kept going on about. We share a bit of it together and bring the rest home for later.

ERWIN

Wow, chocolate cake sounds fucking amazing.

LEVI

It does.

ERWIN

So that's dinner, then. What next? Do we go home after that, or do we go somewhere else?

LEVI

That's a good question.

Levi is fully in Erwins lap now, legs stretched along his own. Erwin is touching him softly, a protective kind of touch. Levi's head is back on Erwin’s shoulder, and he relaxes into it.

LEVI

We could walk home from there. The long way, enjoy the night a little bit longer.

ERWIN

Maybe if it's not too cold out.

LEVI

Yeah. We take the long way home and chat about whatever, the streets are a bit empty. I was going to suggest seeing a movie, but I like the idea of walking home better this time.

ERWIN

Another time, then.

LEVI

Yeah, a different night out.

A beat of warm silence. There is not another part of this dream, but it feels incomplete.

ERWIN

That all sounds wonderful, we will definitely do it. I have one editor's note, though it's more of a suggestion.

LEVI

Oh, is this a paper I'm turning in now?

ERWIN

Hah, no, I would simply like to add on to this dream here. My dream in exchange.

Levi leans to where he can meet Erwin in the eyes. His eyebrows rise.

LEVI

Yes, professor?

Erwin smiles down at Levi with a knowing glance.

ERWIN

So, we took the long way home. You’re cold, like you always are, and you make that very clear to me.

LEVI

Look, I'm not programmed to emit body heat like a goddamned furnace.

ERWIN

Yes I know. We finally made it home, dropping our work bags at the door. You’re grateful to be in the warm house, and I have to agree. It's bitter cold out there.

LEVI

Mmm.

ERWIN

I tell you to hop in the shower to warm up a bit. I'm still a little warm from the wine.

LEVI

Well yeah you also never get cold.

ERWIN

Mmm. You come out of the shower like you are now. Warm, a little damp. I'm already reading a book in bed, pajamas on. I say to you, “how can I focus on anything when you look like that?”

Levi huffs a laugh.

LEVI

I didn’t even do anything, I just got out of the shower.

ERWIN

I know. You don't have to do anything, not with how perfect you look.

LEVI

Tch. Was this all a ploy for me to get in bed with you?

ERWIN

Let me have my dream, Levi. Anyway, You get into bed, and you’re right at my side, like now.

Erwin taps the side of Levi’s thigh gently.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

We're both warm and content, it's been a nice night out. A long day. We're together at the end of it, like we are every day.

LEVI

Now you’re getting soft on me.

ERWIN

Quite the opposite. Now that I have you alone, you’re mine. “You looked beautiful at dinner tonight,” I’d say.

Levi scoffs.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

And you’d scoff, just like that. You’ll tell me “I look the same every day.” Which couldn’t be further from the truth. “I mean it Levi,” I’d say, “You truly get more handsome with every passing day.”

LEVI

(Warning)

Erwin...

ERWIN

And I’ll pull you closer towards me, and I’ll say “let me show you how beautiful you are to me.”

LEVI

(Softly)

How are you going to show me?

The hand on Levi's thigh moves higher, grabbing at his hip.

ERWIN

Like this.

Erwin kisses the side of Levi’s neck slowly. It's soft and inviting, forcing Levi to stretch his neck and expose more of his skin to Erwin.

ERWIN

I'll kiss you here, on your pretty neck. Real soft like.

Erwin breathes hotly onto Levi’s neck. He leaves soft touches up his neck and to his jaw, then his cheek.

ERWIN

And I'll tell you that you’re perfect, and you’re mine. That I need you here and now.

There's a brief moment before Levi tilts his head into a kiss. First it is soft, tender, before they melt into each other. Erwin brings Levi tighter into his embrace, kneading the skin on his hip.

Levis' hands begin to drift, one on the center of Erwins chest, another tugging at his hair. Erwin continues to lick inside of Levi's mouth, open and wanting.

They're both panting for air loud into the room. Levi pulls on Erwin’s hair, exposing his neck to him.

Erwin opens his eyes, still looking down at Levi. His face is flush, pupils blown.

ERWIN

(Panting)

I need you, Lee. Please.

LEVI

How do you want me?

ERWIN

Let me touch you.

Levi hardens, the outline of his clothed erection turning on like the flip of a light switch. He lets go of Erwin’s hair as Erwin’s  hand moves across his hip and down, down so he can feel him.

Erwin raises his eyebrows as he presses the flat of his palm on him. Levi shivers at the warmth of his large hand.

ERWIN

You know, I’m jealous that you can do that.

Levi huffs a laugh.

LEVI

Getting old, professor?

It’s Erwins turn to laugh, forehead now on Levis shoulder.

ERWIN

Not just everyone can do that.

Erwin kisses Levi again, running his hand over the outside of his briefs.

ERWIN

Let me make you feel good, let me take care of you.

Levi breathes hot air against Erwins lips.

LEVI

Please.

They pull at each other's lips, a fight in domination of each other's mouths. Levi grunts softly at the pressure Erwin has on him. Soon, he's canting his hips up into Erwins touch.

ERWIN

Talk to me.

LEVI

Feels good, ‘feels good. Please.

ERWIN

Need more?

LEVI

Mmph, yeah. Yeah, touch me.

Erwin goes for Levi’s underwear, and pulls them down his legs quickly. They both groan as Erwin wraps his hand around him, running his hand along him.

LEVI

Take me, come on.

Erwin groans again as Levi goes for his sleep pants, rearranging themselves until they are back in each other's arms, fully on the bed. Erwin turns and reaches for Levi again, pulling him against his body.

Erwin reaches above Levi to grab something from his side of the nightstand. It turns out to be the green bottle of lube, and it squeaks as he pours some of it onto his palm.

He slides a hand down between their bodies after that and grabs them together. Levi hisses, just like he always does, with how cold his hold feels.

ERWIN

It's okay, just give it a minute.

He strokes the two of them together in long strides of his hand, and moans airily.

Levi moves in Erwin’s grip, canting his hips to meet where Erwin is pressed against him. He's gritting his teeth as he does this, sensitive to the cold lube on the thermal graft of skin.

They continue like this for some time, reveling in mingled breaths and the flicks of Erwin’s wrist.

ERWIN

(Muttering)

God, fuck. Ah- fuck.

Levi reaches down and joins their hands together/intertwines their hands. They move at the same time, pressing tightly into their fists. Levi moans through his gritted teeth.

LEVI

Come on, just come on already- give it to me.

ERWIN

Mmph, yeah okay, okay.

take a moment to rearrange their positions. Levi presses his face into the mattress and brings his hips up to show Erwin what is his.

Erwin watches with wide eyes as Levi puts himself into position, his hips swaying just lightly.

He drags a finger down Levi’s spine, and Levi shudders at the touch.

ERWIN

God, you’re perfect. So soft and willing, open for me like this.

Erwin’s hands drag lower until they trail over the last curve of Levi’s spine and follow the crease down.

ERWIN

(Cont’d)

You’re so beautiful, I can't stand it.

Erwin grabs a handful of Levi's hips with one hand. Levi looks back at Erwin over his shoulder to watch as Erwin is enthralled by toying with him.

ERWIN

-and your skin is so smooth.

His finger drags lower.

ERWIN

And you’re so tight here, so pink.

If Levi was programmed to feel embarrassment, he would likely be experiencing it at this moment. He’s  spread open and raw for Erwin to see and inspect with the tip of his fingers, with large, watching eyes.

Erwin continues to touch Levi all over with a flat palm. His hips, the backs of Levi’s thighs, around the curves of his ass.

LEVI

Erwin, fucking touch me already.

ERWIN

(Warmly)

Hmm.

Finally, fucking finally, he drags his hand up higher, pushing in again at the tightness of his hole with a pad of a finger.

Levi groans as he presses lightly, swaying his hips to the touch.

ERWIN

There we are, good. Loosen yourself up for me.

Levi does, like the flick of a switch, loosening himself so that Erwin may take him faster.

ERWIN

(chuckling)

Amazing.

Levi settles his face into the pillow, reaching around to grab at his thighs to spread them further apart. Erwin pushes himself in, working his way in slowly. There's no real need to do that since Levi has full control over himself, but he enjoys the pretense nonetheless.

They both moan when Erwin seats himself fully inside of Levi, pulling him even harder against him, hands like vices on Levi’s hips.

Erwin pulls and tugs at Levi as he sets a fast pace, the tops of Erwin’s thighs clapping into the backs of Levi’s when he meets them in a thrust.

LEVI

(moaning)

Ughhh…

The coupling grows louder, more intense. The sound is practically bouncing off the walls.

ERWIN

(Groaning)

Fuck, it’s like you were made for me.

Erwin fucks Levi with wild abandon, stunted breathing and gasping behind him as he takes  him, Levi every so often tightening his grip around the base of Erwin’s cock, pulling him deeper inside.

ERWIN

Lee-

Erwin reaches around to grab at Levi, keeping himself at a fast, steady pace. Levi whines loudly as Erwin grips him, suddenly forgetting that his needs had been abandoned. Levi doesn’t need to come, but it sure feels good when Erwin makes him try.

ERWIN

Fuck, you’re so tight...

He is close.

LEVI

Ah, fuck!

Erwin drops his head onto Levi’s shoulder as he continues to thrust inside him, and groans into Levi’s back. His hips stutter once, twice.

LEVI

I need it..please...give it to me.

ERWIN

How could I say no when you ask so nicely?

Erwin smiles. The Camera pans down to Levi, whose face is pressed into the bed. His expression is hard to read, somewhere between pleasure and boredom.

The camera tracks underneath the bed.

CUT TO  BLACK.

CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM - NEXT MORNING

Levi stares at the ceiling, arms folded against his chest. Erwin sleeps soundly beside him until an alarm breaks the silence.

The alarm stops. The camera focuses on Levi as Erwin gets out of bed. O.S. sounds of shuffling.

He makes his way around the side of the bed and kisses Levi lightly, whose eyes are still fixed on the ceiling.

ERWIN

Mornin’.

Footsteps move and soften as they fade into the next room. The shower turns on.

Levi sighs.

CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON

Levi lounges on the couch, mindlessly watching something on the television.

Erwin's voice carries into the room, the office door just barely open. His voice carries into the rest of the apartment, though the rest of him is missing.

It's an overcast day, grayness filtering through the main windows of the apartment. The apartment is orderly, there are leftovers warming on the stove.

He looks restless, though there is not much for him to do.

Eventually, Levi starts to follow the sound of Erwin and floats closer to his office.

ERWIN

(O.S.)

...Well that is interesting that you say that. Different time periods of art can be heavily referential. Like I said in the lecture, art likes to reference itself time and time again.

A student speaks through the computer’s speakers, the words muffled.

Levi steps closer to the door and listens.

ERWIN

(Cont’d.)

Yes, yes. I would say keep that in mind when you are studying. You’re on the right track, so I would try not to stress yourself out too much.

The student continues to talk.

ERWIN

Mm, yeah. It's no problem, you can always reach out if you have any questions about the material.

Yes of course, I will talk to you soon. Bye.

The call clicks, and the laptop closes shut.

Levi presses open the door slowly, and the hinges creak. Erwin looks up suddenly from behind his large desk. Levi leans against the frame of the doorway and looks around. He never really sees the inside of this room.

LEVI

Hey.

Erwin smiles pleasantly at Levi.

ERWIN

Hi my love. You’re coming in at a good time.

LEVI

End of office hours?

ERWIN

Mhm. Hopefully once this exam is over the students stress a little bit less.

LEVI

Are you pushing them that hard?

ERWIN

No, just not everyone seems to make all the connections that I need them to. I think they’re coming around, but I'm interested to see what happens with it.

LEVI

When's the exam?

ERWIN

Monday. I decided I’d give them the weekend.

LEVI

(Mocking)

You’re too soft.

Erwin moves around the side of his desk towards Levi. Erwin is somehow larger than the room, seemingly blocking the space from Levi’s view.

ERWIN

Oh, please. Nobody should fail this course, not at least if I could try. Helps my test scores overall.

Erwin kisses Levi on the forehead, and touches his chin with one hand.

ERWIN

Lunch?

LEVI

Mmm.

CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER

The pair share leftovers from Erwin’s dinner the night before. Forks scrape plates as Erwin eats them quietly. Levi watches him, and sips a cup of tea.

ERWIN

So.

A beat.

LEVI

So

ERWIN

I might have made a miscalculation.

Levi raises a brow at him.

ERWIN

I forgot a couple of things at the store yesterday.

LEVI

Hm.

ERWIN

And I have a bunch of back to back faculty meetings the rest of the afternoon.

Levi takes a sip of tea.

LEVI

Are you asking me to order some things?

ERWIN

Or , you could run up there real quick. Something to do. You know the way now.

Levi sits back, a beat. Erwin continues to eat.

LEVI

Is it alright for me to go on my own?

Erwin squints, confused.

ERWIN

What do you mean alright?

LEVI

Your telling me it's fine if I go to the store alone, but it's also a bad time to go out. Sorry if i'm a little confused, but i'm not really understanding this.

ERWIN

Well that's different.

LEVI

Different how?

ERWIN

Going into the city versus going around the corner to the grocery store...it's different.

LEVI

I'm still not understanding.

ERWIN

Levi, please.

LEVI

No, Erwin, please explain this. What's the deal with the arbitrary rules on this?

ERWIN

They're... they're not arbitrary. It's all for a good reason.

LEVI

...Which is?

Erwin sets down his fork.

ERWIN

Look, it's like I said last night.

LEVI

(interjecting)

It's a bad time. I know already, fuck!

Levi crosses his arms.

ERWIN

Then why are we having this discussion again?

LEVI

Because I still don’t understand what's going on, dammit!

ERWIN

I just don't know what there is to not understand, my love. It's not like I am telling you what to do, I am just looking out for you.

LEVI

Looking out for me?

ERWIN

Levi, please. I am your husband, I just want to keep you safe. Right now, going into the city is not a wise idea. We will just have to wait a bit longer when things clear up. The grocery store is close, and you’re more than capable to run up and grab some things, so I thought I would ask you. That's all.

Levi heaves a sigh, deflated.

LEVI

Fine. Write me a list of the stuff you need, I'll head over there in a bit.

ERWIN

I can just do it later if you don't want to go.

Levi gives Erwin a look. A beat.

LEVI

It's fine. I'll go when you’re in your meetings.

Erwin places his fork on his plate, and stands from the table. He gives a small smile, an attempt at comfort.

ERWIN

Thank you, my love. I do appreciate it. Let me know if you find something tasty for later when I'm done.

CUT TO:

INT. GROCERY STORE - AFTERNOON

Levi stands at the checkout line of the grocery store. The CASHIER is a cheerful young woman, who scans a few small items that Erwin had requested. The CASHIER places the items into the bag, and looks at the kiosk. She shakes her head at Levi.

CASHIER

Could you try to swipe your card again? The computer says that the action was not approved.

LEVI

Oh.

(Muttering)

I should have at least something in my account.

Levi squints at the small screen before trying his card again.

The machine beeps loudly at Levi again.

CASHIER

Sorry sir, it's still not working. Do you have another form of payment?

A beat. He is not sure what to do. He checks his wallet, but  it is devoid of cash. He looks at the cashier.

LEVI

Actually, would you mind putting this on hold while I call my bank really quick?

The CASHIER nods at him politely.

CASHIER

Sure thing, I'll keep them over here.

LEVI

(Grumbling)

Thanks, I’ll be right back.

Stepping out of the direct line of sight of the cashier, he pulls his phone from his pocket.

Bank app. He tries to put in his passcode, the same one he uses for everything.

Error, Wrong Username or Passcode. Please try again.

Maybe it's all lowercase?

He tries again.

Error, Wrong Username or Passcode. Please try again.

Fuck!

One more try. He types furiously onto the keypad.

Your account is now locked. Please press here to verify your account.

The app displays three questions.

LEVI

(To himself)

Great, twenty-fucking questions.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR FIRST PET?

Okay, uh, pass. Did I even have a pet as a kid?

He scrolls to the next question. The text disappears, then another question appears.

WHAT CITY WERE YOU BORN IN?

A beat. Levi blinks at the screen.

Forget this.

Next question.

WHERE DID YOU MEET YOUR SPOUSE?

LEVI

Shit.

Levi stares blankly at the screen. The question hits him right in the stomach.

I should know this. I should fucking know all of these.

He draws a blank on every single question.

This should be obvious. It shouldn’t even take a single second to remember these.

Levi checks his memory systems. Text and binary roll down the screen, so quickly that it's not possible to read them. There is no data that could fill any of these questions. There's nothing to be found, everything comes up blank.

LEVI

(whispering)

What the fuck is going on?

He looks back to the cashier from around the corner where he’s standing. His grocery bags sit on a counter behind the cashier.

Levi shakes his head.

I can’t be here anymore.

CUT TO:

EXT. GROCERY STORE - AFTERNOON

Levi moves outside of the store a bit in a panic, and is dialing a number on his phone. The caller picks up on the third ring.

LEVI

Hi.

ERWIN

(Over the phone)

Hey! Is everything okay? You just don’t usually-

LEVI

(Interjecting)

Yeah, everything is fine.

He pauses, nervous.

ERWIN

Are you sure?

LEVI

Yeah, it’s just. Well I’m standing outside the grocery store, and... well, it doesn't matter. My card declined for some reason and I can’t buy our shit. Think you could run up here so I can pay for this?

ERWIN

Oh, um yeah of course. I am just finishing up.

LEVI

Okay, thanks.

ERWIN

I’ll see you in a few. Love you.

The phone line clicks, and Levi returns the phone to his pocket. He stands outside, looking upset as he waits for Erwin to arrive.

CUT TO:

EXT. GROCERY STORE - A FEW MINUTES LATER

Erwin emerges from the grocery store with a few bags in hand. He smiles at Levi in greeting as he waits for him outside the store. They turn together and begin their walk back to the apartment.

LEVI

Thank you for coming up here and doing that.

ERWIN

Not a problem, I was just finishing up my last meeting. The last one got canceled last minute.

At the street corner, Erwin stops and gives Levi a sidelong glance.

ERWIN

You look upset.

A beat.

LEVI

It’s fine.

The light changes and they cross the street.

ERWIN

Did something happen while you were in there? Did someone say anything something to you?

LEVI

Nothing fucking happened, Erwin. The card got declined, and I had to call you to come help me. That’s all.

They walk back to the house in mutual silence. It’s cold and windy, and the plastic bags rustle as they walk through the empty streets.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT KITCHEN - EARLY EVENING

Dinner cooks on the stove. Erwin stands over the flames, and Levi cuts vegetables with chef-like precision. The tension is palpable, though neither man chooses to acknowledge it.

Erwin turns from stirring a pot to lean against the counter to watch Levi work. The chopping is loud and insistent, a touch of anger in it.

ERWIN

What did the bell pepper do to you?

Levi pauses to look over his shoulder, heat in his eyes.

ERWIN

Levi, talk to me here. I can’t know what’s going on unless you at least tell me.

Levi is quiet as he continues to mince vegetables. Erwin leans against the counter beside Levi and looks at him with concern.

ERWIN

Levi...

Running out of pepper to cut, Levi turns around to dump it into the pot on the stove. He faces away from Erwin for a moment, gripping the counter.

ERWIN

(Quieter)

Was it too much? You can be honest.

LEVI

Let’s not talk about this right now.

ERWIN

Why not talk about this if you’re still upset? Clearly something must have happened, you haven’t spoken since we got home.

Finally, Levi turns around and leans against the counter. He folds his arms across his chest.

LEVI

Where did we meet?

Erwin raises an eyebrow, he’s surprised.

ERWIN

Where did we meet?

LEVI

Yeah, Erwin. Where did we meet. For the first time. You know, when we made introductions, maybe shook hands, some kinda funny story. You know, the one that every couple tells other people in some jovial way about how they met their spouse.

A beat. Erwin’s expression is somewhere between confusion and shock.

ERWIN

Lee, you remember the day we met. Why are you bringing this up right now?

LEVI

Clearly I don’t if I’m asking you to tell me.

ERWIN

How does this have anything to do with the store earlier?

LEVI

You asked me why I’m upset, and I’m telling you. Answer the question.

Erwin shakes his head.

ERWIN

Um, okay. Well we were here, in the apartment. Not sure if you have any memory of the activation period or not. But you were activated here, in the master bathtub, and you came out of the tub dripping wet and-

LEVI

(Interjecting)

I was asking for a towel. I remember, I was there. I remember that.

ERWIN

Then why are you asking me this?

Levi puts his head in one of his hands.

LEVI

It just... it just felt like I knew you for some reason. Like I woke up in the bathtub covered in that sticky shit, knowing your name. Maybe I didn’t, I don’t know. Like, I knew that I was Levi, and you were Erwin. That’s mostly what I remember.

ERWIN

You’re right, it sounds like it was confusing for you.

Erwin moves to turn off the stove, and stands in front of Levi.

ERWIN

Could the fact that I had something to do with your programming or input data be any reason why? I mean, I had to sign some things for the paperwork.

LEVI

I mean maybe? It’s still just weird to me.

ERWIN

Yeah I mean I can’t read your thoughts, but I can empathize with you. It sounds like it is a lot of information to take in.

Erwin puts his hand over Levi’s that is still gripping the edge of the counter.

ERWIN

Can I ask how this is related to the store and you calling me earlier? Or was this just something you were thinking about?

Levi takes in a slow breath. A beat.

LEVI

Just...give me a minute. Let’s eat before it gets cold.

Erwin smiles softly. He still looks nervous.

ERWIN

Sure.

CUT TO:

INT. KITCHEN - APARTMENT KITCHEN - EVENING

They eat dinner. Erwin watches Levi eat with an air of concern.

LEVI

This is good.

ERWIN

I tried something a little different this time, just to see. I  think it could use a little more spice.

LEVI

(Non-committal)

Hmm.

Metal forks scrape plates as they continue to eat.

ERWIN

You know you don’t have to eat if you don’t want to, don’t make me force you just out of habit.

LEVI

You’re not forcing me to do anything. I like eating, it’s just not really that necessary. I have a sense of taste, but the food doesn't power me like it does you.

ERWIN

Right.

Levi places his fork next to his plate and leans back. They continue to watch each other carefully.

LEVI

I called you because one of the security questions for my bank app was about where we met and it just caught me off guard.

Erwin nods, his mouth full.

ERWIN

Oh?

LEVI

Yeah when the card was declined I got locked from my account, and that was one of the security questions. That’s why I called.

A beat.

ERWIN

I see.

CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Erwin is perched on the corner of the couch, scrolling on his phone. Levi walks into the room, now changed into pajamas. The air is stiff between them.

ERWIN

You want to watch something? It’s still kinda early.

Levi sits down on the couch somewhat next to Erwin.

LEVI

Yeah, okay.

Erwin grabs the remote.

ERWIN

There’s another one of those new Bond movies on demand if you want to watch it.

LEVI

Hmm. Heard the reviews were at least half decent for it.

CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM - LATER

It’s dark inside the living room, the television serving as the room’s sole light source. Erwin snores lightly, his head in Levi’s lap.

Levi watches him sleep, then turns his attention back to the screen.

CUT TO:

EXT. SMALL CITY - AFTERNOON

The pair race through tight cobblestone streets in a luxury car. Erwin is at the wheel, Levi in the passenger seat. They’re both wearing expensive suits.

Somehow, Erwinmanages to keep them from hitting the sides of the brick buildings around them. He focuses on the road, but continues to check the rearview mirror. He adjusts it with one hand.

ERWIN

Looks like we have company.

Levi checks the side mirror. Another car passes behind them, similar to the one the pair are in. Erwin makes another dramatic turn. They pass over more uneven cobblestones, and the car shakes violently.

LEVI

How the hell did they make it this far?

Levi opens the glove compartment where a gun sits, rounds roll around unconstrained in the compartment.

LEVI

(Cont’d)

Could we at least get a proper holder for this?

Erwin quickly looks over at the compartment. He speeds up a little, trying to evade the other car.

ERWIN

Honey, I’d love to if I had a moment.

Gunfire rings out from the other car.

LEVI

Fuck! God-fucking-dammit.

Levi takes some bullets and loads the pistol. More shots fire out and hit the back of the car. They look at each other quickly.

ERWIN

I’ll keep it steady.

Levi turns around in the passenger seat, ready to lean out the car’s window.

More shots fire. Levi leans out of the window and fires back several shots. Glass breaks. Erwin makes another turn.

LEVI

Try to make another turn and I’ll go for the tires!

ERWIN

Got it.

Levi leans out the window once more and fires out another round of shots. He hits the tires of the other car, sending the driver into a brick building. Levi takes a seat back inside the car and re-buckles his seatbelt.

LEVI

The road’s blocked.

ERWIN

Give it a minute.

They continue down the road. They turn onto a larger street. People walk on the sidewalk, and there are small shops with street-facing windows. They blend into traffic.

LEVI

Well?

Erwin checks the mirrors again. There are no cars headed toward them that are similar to the one from earlier.

ERWIN

They wouldn’t give it up that easy, Levi.

They continue to drive. They pass an alleyway that some similar looking dark cars sit. Levi looks at Erwin, he notices them and begins to drive a bit faster.

Tires screech as the other cars pull onto the road, and they quickly tail them.

Levi pulls out more bullets from the glove box and loads the  gun. He pulls off his suit jacket and lays it neatly in the backseat. Erwin passes Levi a look.

LEVI

The dry cleaning on the jacket alone, I’m not fucking it up again.

Erwin laughs.

ERWIN

Alright, alright. Just be ready.

Erwin sharply down another corner, in a casual attempt to lose the perpetrators. Once off the main road, the cars speed up and tail them too close. Levi watches them through the mirror.

LEVI

Erwin...

ERWIN

I see them.

Erwin swerves onto a fast-approaching side street. A few shots ring out, some hit the brick. Pedestrians scramble down the road, away from the gunfire.

More shots, some hit the back of the car. The back window shatters. They both flinch, glass is everywhere. Erwin continues his attempt to try and shake the other cars.

ERWIN

I’ll try to get you a clear shot.

Levi leans against the back of the chair and aims his gun toward the pursuers. He fires a round of shots through the open back window, hitting the tires and the gunman, but not before another gunman hits one of their tires.

Their car skitters and turns in a wide circle. More cars approach from side streets and form a circle around them. They’re completely surrounded.

They get out of the car. Erwin pulls a gun from a holster under his pant leg. Armed gunmen file out from cars and guns cock.

The pair stand back to back and raise their guns.

CUT TO:

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The dramatic chase music fades, and Levi is left back in the  dark apartment. The credits drone on in the background, the world now feeling bleaker than the vision. It’s a  disappointing sight. Erwin is still asleep in his lap.

Levi looks around the apartment in the darkness, taking in his still surroundings.

Erwin stirs slightly, and lets out a tired breath. Levi brushes a little strewn hair from Erwin’s brow.

LEVI

(Whispering)

Hey, let’s go to bed.

ERWIN

(Sleepily)

Hmm?

LEVI

Erwin, bed.

ERWIN

Hmm? The movie ended?

LEVI

You fell asleep before the second act started.

Erwin closes his eyes again.

ERWIN

It seemed just okay anyway. Just wanted to close my eyes for a moment.

LEVI

It was fine. Three out of five for me.

ERWIN

Mmm, three out of five.

LEVI

Come on, let’s go to bed.

Levi pats the side of his cheek lightly with one hand.

ERWIN

Okay, I’m getting up.

CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

They both climb into bed. Sheets rustle, then settle. The room is warm and dark. Erwin hugs Levi close to his chest.

ERWIN

(whispering)

I’m lucky I have you.

Erwin sighs tiredly, content. He falls asleep quickly. Levi looks towards the camera and blinks.

FADE TO BLACK.
