Chapter Text
I saw you in a whole different light. These were Righteous killings, even still, I left this behind me, god I tried to leave this behind me.
I knew Malcolm was not the most savory guy but after figuring out Simon's dark dealings the pattern is becoming clear. Someone wanted these rich assholes dead and after finding out about poor Blue it made sense.
No, no that didn’t make it okay, killing, even these schmucks was not okay.
………..
Strolling into the before-funeral party felt as though I was walking into a pen of wolves, just waiting for my back to turn. Vic opened the door to the hallway and served me a wink, well not sure what to do with that. Entering the main room my eyes fell first on Rhys. Rhys raised poor and working class here with these vain vultures. Was he mourning or observing?
Phoebe the Queen of the castle hugged me and seemed genuinely happy to see me. I have to focus any one of these people could be a killer and that included the princess. Looking around I saw most of my suspects sans Kate and Sophie. Roald, an aristocrat who screamed daddy issues and an obvious dislike of me. Adam, my fellow American who was either a conniving genius or a rich kid running with his own kind, only time would tell. Connie was a man who was fairly uninteresting besides his need for attention and liquor. Then Blessings and Genna who were keeping the party alive with snide comments and quick “wit”.
After a few too many scathing comments towards the dead, Rhys excused himself. I felt inclined to follow my only breath of air from these…people.
You, you're keeping me on edge and I don’t like it, what is your game? Who are you?
………….
Rhys has a way about how he carries himself, this cool confidence that I could only fake, he would make an excellent mayor. Stepping next to him on the balcony I looked at him through the corners of my eyes. He looked especially lonesome with the light filtering on his high cheekbones and perfectly coiffed brown hair.
No, I can't be thinking like this when I’m looking for a killer. A killer picking off these people I’ve become superficially and publicly linked too.
“What was your first thought when you heard he was murdered?’’ Rhys implored though it felt as if he already knew.
Good
“Shocked I guess, what about you?” I responded back genuinely curious to hear his answer
He turned towards me fully looking me deep in the eyes “The opposite, Simon tore through people like Christmas presents” Rhys spoke with obvious conviction.
Pausing a moment he continued “They love enemies, they love feeling power over people they think lower than them.’’
“Maybe karma finally caught up to him”
Or rather you caught up too him
“I knew he was a bad person I had hoped he would have changed eventually, or at least learned to be honest” Rhys leaned in closer
“ I don’t know what that deal with the girl was about but Simon was a liar.” His eyebrows furrowed and I felt myself drawn closer
“ I truly wish he could have lived to come clean, he could’ve been….” He cut himself short he knew I knew what he had meant.
Personally I don’t believe for a second that Simon Soo would ever be honest to the world, the people around him or even himself.
“Other than that I’m fine, I’m just gutted he's dead” after he finished speaking Rhys put his hand on my shoulder. His hand was warm and solid it lingered only a second too long before he moved it and once again turned towards the view. Together we watched the London streets and eventual sunset until the party ended and I was off to my flat.
After all I still had to find you.
