Work Text:
The city of San Francisco didn’t know Enid Sinclair.
No stranger on the busy streets on their way to a shitty nine to five could stop and identify her. No one knew her as the bubbly cheerleader who just finished high school at Nevermore High— the girl who insisted on dying the ends of her hair faded pink and blue despite her age. The girl who had three annoying older brothers back home.
No. No one knew that normal girl.
Society only knew the WolfSpider.
The friendly neighborhood crime-fighter!
The idol people called their hero.
Enid didn’t like calling herself a hero at the end of the day. Her story was simple; she was gifted with an ability and opportunity to do something good— in her eyes, she didn’t deserve the praise she got for doing that good.
In the past few months? She’d stopped countless bank robberies, she’d chased and caught an abundant of thugs and run-away drug dealers— hell, on a good day she might even have recused a poor cat stuck in a tree.
In those months, she’d made many friends and many, many enemies like all hero’s did, stereotypically.
Tyler Galpin was her worst enemy.
Who knew the innocent-looking barista with curly hair would turn out to be her arch nemesis all along?
The Hyde was a monster that had been terrorizing the poor city for over a year.
Tonight was the night Enid faced him.
And.. tonight was also the night Enid would loose her.
Wednesday Addams; the love of her life.
“Wednesday, please— I am begging you!”
Enid had never been so desperate.
It was no secret she was here to try and reach Tyler. She wanted to speak through to him and avoid battle if at all possible but that likely wouldn’t be the case..
She was smart enough to know she’d be dealing with the Hyde. Tonight? There’d be bloodshed and tragedy.
Wednesday didn’t need to be in the middle of it.
But? She was as stubborn as all the other Addams.
“This is my choice, Enid.” She said coldly and firmly, “I’m not letting you do this alone.. not this time.”
Wednesday was tired of seeing Enid hurt. She was tried of patching her up after everything. She knew the role Enid played was heavy and dangerous. There was a big chance she could loose her tonight. The Hyde was strong.. Enid was too but— No. She wouldn’t risk loosing her. There was no way she was gonna leave her side.
“This is my fight. My enemy.” Enid said, matching the shorter girls’ tone with the same coldness. “This is going to be dangerous, you don’t understa—“
Enid didn’t get a chance to finish her sentence.
Because out of no where? The Hyde attacked.
The Hyde’s beast form was similar to that of a deformed werewolf creature with human features? It was pretty hard to explain but he traveled via hoverboard, standing on his back legs— claws at the ready to shred.
The couple was standing on top of a wet warehouse roof. It was obviously vacant and slightly full of debris.
“Hey Spidey..”
Tyler was no longer there.
It was obvious by his eyes and the way he smiled. It sent a shiver down Enid’s spine seeing him hover over her.
“I thought it’d be us tonight.. but you’ve brought a friend? That’s not fun, she’ll just get in the way..”
Enid’s eyes widened slightly, swallowing her fear.
“No. Wednesday, run! Please!”
Wednesday sensed the severity and normally wouldn’t take too kindly to orders but in the heat of the moment? She listened and turnt to run as fast as she could.
She didn’t make it far before the Hyde had hovered over and scooped her up like she was nothing but prey.
Wednesday let out a small gasp at the way he grabbed her— this wasn’t the kind friend she once knew anymore.. he didn’t care if he caused her harm.
“Tyler!” Enid yelled out, instantly shooting a web at a nearby high post to chase after them.
The Hyde moved fast with Wednesday in his arms.
Enid tried to keep up, shooting and swinging from web to web through the many warehouse top pipes.
“Tyler! Put her down!”
All she wanted was Wednesday to be safe..
And now he had the upper hand? No, not for long.
Enid had gotten stronger and faster ever since she started hero work. She was surprised how fast she was able to move when Wednesday’s safety depended on it.
Tyler carried Wednesday bridal style in his tight embrace— hovering over to the highest point; the clock tower right next to the significantly smaller warehouse.
God, the blonde hated heights.
But she didn’t stop to process that fear, she suppressed it and clung her webs to the brick exterior of the building— pulling herself up the glass dome ceiling.
All the while, the Hyde found it all to be a big game. He took Wednesday higher and taunted the blonde hero by hovering nearby in a circle a few times, laughing.
Enid became so desperate she shot webs in the air to try and stick to his hoverboard but to no avail. He was fast.
“Tyler, please!” She practically screamed, straining her voice, “This isn’t you! I know you’re in there!”
He was once their friend.. why was he doing this?
The old Tyler would never hurt Wednesday. Enid was going to try and reason with him but it all fell short.
Wednesday didn’t have any option but to hold on for dear life, listening to the mix of Tyler’s sadistic laughter and her girlfriends anxious yells and pleads.
“Tyler..” Wednesday slowly whispered, uneasily.
“Tyler is dead!”
The Hyde growled out through gritted teeth.
“Tyler! This is between you and me!” Enid’s fear was turning into anger, “You wanna fight?! Put her down! It’s just you and me! Let Wednesday go, godamnit!”
Wednesday had never heard Enid so angry before..
Her girlfriend was usually cheerful and full of light. Hell, she smiled even after coming home from a non rewarding night of crime-fighting. When she got more bruises than any validation— she was always happy.
Except for now.
Tyler snarled deep in his throat at her demands.
“Fine.” He uttered under his breath.
Wednesday’s eyes widened when she realized what he was going to do. He was going to drop her..
As she’d expectedly, he suddenly let Wednesday go and let her fall— opening his creature-like arms for an extra flare of dramatics. Wednesday let out a yelp.
Enid’s heart dropped to her stomach. She felt sick.
“No!”
She jumped faster than she ever had before— Wednesday was falling fast but it was as if Enid’s body trained all those months for this very moment.
Wednesday fell into her arms with a small grunt and together they fell through the glass ceiling of the clock tower— Enid broke their fall when they landed hard.
It hurt like hell but she could hardly feel it due to all the adrenaline and anxiety coursing through her veins.
Glass shattered and fell all around them but all Enid could focus on was the girl on top of her.
“H-hey, baby.. you okay?”
They were both panting, out of breath and shaking.
Wednesday immediately shook her head no. Obviously not! Clearly she was not okay with what was happening!
Enid knew it was a stupid question.
Her white suit-covered hand went to the back of Wednesday head, creasing her hair for slight comfort.
They had only a second of sincerity before something fell beside them on the metal grate they were laying on.
It was bright orange and flashy— it was a bomb.
Shit!
It had been thrown down from the now open crashed in ceiling. Tyler had obviously thrown it down. The couple had exactly less than two seconds to react before it exploded and sent them flying.
Through fresh debris and an onset of brown dust from the aftershock, Enid held Wednesday’s hand for dear life. Her heart clenched when she heard Wednesday scream.
It was a small, light scream but the fear was there..
Why had Wednesday gotten involved?
Enid clung to the broken piece of grate, looking down at her girlfriend who dangled from her mere grasp.
“It’s okay, Wens! I got you, I promise..” She said in as soft of a tone as she could given their situation. “I’ll just set you down right here, okay? Stay here..”
With an extension of her web, she hoisted Wednesday down from her grasp into the safety of the gears. It was a clock tower— gears and mechanical parts were everywhere. Maybe if Wednesday was shielded by them, Tyler would focus on her more? Enid went with it.
With Wednesday in a safe position— or so she thought— she turnt her attention to Tyler who had made his way into the clock tower by now to form his attack.
Their combat was harsh and short-lasted.
Enid dodged his first front of punches, swinging around with her webs before she got the perfect chance and jumped on his back, wrapping her strong arms around his neck— she held on tight and tried to use her web to tie up his limbs to take away movement.
But unfortunately, he was smart enough to back up and slam her into the wall of the building.
Wednesday stood on unsteady ground from below the short battle above. They were many feet in the hair, amongst one of the tallest buildings in the city and she was standing on a floor that was spinning. All the many gears under feet— the continuous ticking of the large clock itself— it was all too much.
As she tried to find her balance, slowly taking steps towards more solid footing, she could hear the sounds of battle and the destruction of property from up above.
She watched Tyler land a hard punch to her girlfriend’s face and Wednesday felt herself glare, a fist balling at her side in anger. How dare he touch her..
Wednesday may not have super abilities but she’d do anything to help Enid right now!
But Enid didn’t need too much help, for as debris from the side of the building fell and sparks flew through the air here and there, she landed a strong kick to the Hyde’s chest, completely knocking him off his hoverboard.
Tyler’s body fell from the kick, landing on his stomach on a lower level, rendering his movement momentarily.
When he fell, the now unaccompanied hoverboard fell too. The board fell straight down and took out the gears from underneath Wednesday as it did, causing her to fall.
Enid acted instantly— jumping down and shooting a web towards the falling girl. Wednesday grabbed onto it and held it for dear life, the rest of her body dangling. There was nothing under her now. It was just the drop.
As the blonde in her white, pink and black suit tried to pull Wednesday back up, Tyler got back up..
“Enid! Behind you!”
She tried to warn her but he was already there.
The Hyde jumped on Enid’s back and with newfound strength, he slammed her down on the large gear they were now fighting on. He went as far as to step on her forearm that held the web Wednesday clung too.
Enid’s face felt hot in her mask, she knew no one could see her facial expressions but she was using all her strength to fight Tyler’s attempts. She knew he was trying to sabotage Wednesday’s safety.
All the weight of their bodies caused the gears to stop spinning— large metal against metal protesting the halt.
That’s when Tyler brought out his claws, trying to swing at Enid, desperate to do any amount of damage. Enid dodged his attacks, managing to shoot enough web to pin one of his hands down, halting more movement. Now they were both down a hand— evening the playing field.
He went to swing at her again with his free hand but was met with a hard headbutt to the face. It hurt like hell but it was a sacrifice she was willing to make.
While Tyler tried to recover from the blow, she used her free hand to wrap web around his neck— sticking the end of the web to another gear, choking him.
Despite being choked by the web, he still had one free hand. He used it to choke out the blonde. She was smaller than him by a large difference— it should be easy to break her neck. Enid didn’t let him. She used her free hand to clutch the beasts forearm.
Due to all the pinning and roughness of halting the movement— two large gears knocked against one another, pinning the line of web Wednesday was dangling from between them, small bits of debris falling down.
Wednesday watched a piece of debris— a small pipe— fall from above and despite trying not to, she looked down and watched it drop. Holy shit.. she was very high up. A fall from this height would kill her, no question.
She wasn’t one to fear anything. Enid usually held enough fear for the both of them.. but this was the moment Wednesday began to get a little scared.
Enid knew their situation and current position was less than ideal. She moved one of her feet and shoved it between two gears to try and keep them still. She ignored the pain in her foot from doing so.
Fuck! She had to get them out of this!
The gears in the clock tower were meant to constantly spin. Trying to halt them would only last so long..
And Enid was only so strong..
Finally, something snapped. Something gave way.
Wednesday’s breath left her lungs.
“E-Enid..?”
The blondes heart shattered at how scared Wednesday sounded. She wasn’t used to hearing that in her girlfriends voice and God be dammed, when they got out of this? She’d make sure Wednesday felt safe.
The gears began breaking, falling apart from the position they’d been pinned in. It all happened so fast but the one good thing out of it was that Tyler was thrown back against the wall, parts of the damage falling beside him. The way his body slumped made it known he was officially unconscious. Good— he could stay like that.
The huge clock began to spin rapidly to try and catch up with all the time that had been missed.
And throughout everything? The web snapped.
Wednesday let out a small gasp as the feeling of falling took over her small form. She was falling.
She was going to die.
“Wednesday!”
Enid no longer cared about anything else. The only priority she had was to save her girl.
She jumped off the fallen gears, plummeting downward towards Wednesday as they both fell. Enid dove as quick as she could but it felt as though the distance between them never closed. She never got close enough.
Enid extended her arm and shot a web, hoping that the web would travel fast enough to reach her.
Wednesday couldn’t see Enid’s blue eyes. All she could see was her white mask.. she could see her reflection. It almost looked peaceful. She’d always joked that she wanted to go skydiving without a parachute— Enid always called her crazy.. but look at them now.
She could see Wednesday’s dark eyes.
It was like their entire relationship— backtracking to the first day they met in that stupid sophomore chemistry class— flashed before her beautiful dark eyes.
Wednesday knew Enid was going to loose her..
Debris and fallen pieces fell beside her, dropping down faster by the second. They were falling fast but it still felt as though everything was going in slow motion.
In her lovers eyes, she could see tears. Wednesday never cried. She knew they weren’t of sadness— they were just from all the wind. The way her braids and bangs flew was almost captivating.. the worst part of it all? Enid was certain she’d save her. She knew she would..
She had to save her.
Enid could no longer see Wednesday, due to all the falling parts but the web she’d shot was extending to her, like a helpful claw, weaving through the fallen parts.
Wednesday knew Enid couldn’t see her. It hurt to know Enid was so confident that she’d save her. The blonde couldn’t see how close she was to the ground. Wednesday knew though.. she let out a shaky breath.
Dark eyes closed, silently accepting her faith.
As Enid fell closer to the ground, she came up on a pipe that was perfect to grab onto.
When the web finally reached Wednesday’s body, it latched onto her black and white stripped shirt— at the same time, Enid grabbed onto the pole.
Due to suddenly being grabbed and supported, Wednesday’s body surged a little, she was too close to the ground. The web stopped her body from hitting the ground.. but it didn’t stop her head from hitting it.
Her head slammed against the ground and that’s when Wednesday sunk into darkness. Her body went limp.
Enid hadn’t seen her head hit the ground.
Relief flooded the blonde’s chest. She’d done it! She’d stopped Wednesday was hitting the ground!
She’d saved her!
Pieces finally hit the ground with small clangs and crashes. The hour hand on the huge clock above finally slowed and caught up with time.
It was this moment where Enid felt present. It felt like nothing was going in slow motion anymore.
Wednesday’s body hung from the web Enid had stuck to the pole and dangled there, lifelessly.
Finally, Enid jumped down from the pole.
She landed and took in the sight of her girlfriend with a small bit of concern.. perhaps it was the shock.
After the whole incident, Enid was finally able to take off her white mask. Her suit would need preparing after this but that was the least of her concerns in that moment.
Panting heavily and slowly, she caught her breath.
“Hey.. Hey, Wens..”
Carefully, she moved to hold Wednesday’s body, supporting her so she was no longer dangling.
Why wasn’t she waking up?
Enid.. Enid had saved her..
Right?
“Wednesday..” She said a little loudly, her voice shaking.
Swiftly but with caution, she cut her free from the web and sunk to the floor, holding her body close.
“Hey..” She repeated, louder this time.
Wednesday didn’t respond, her head tilted all the way back against WolfSpider’s strong embrace.
Enid was slowly starting to understand what happened. She didn’t wanna believe that. No, no.. she’d saved her!
“Wens, please..”
The tears started forming, her lip beginning to quiver.
She took in the sight before her a little closer, a shaky hand coming up to support her head, her thumb stopping to crease her lover’s cheek— those little freckles.
“Breathe.”
Please. Wednesday had to be breathing! She had to be alive— no, this.. this couldn’t be happening!
“Wednesday, baby.. I’m here.”
She was. She was right there.
There was no way she’d let her go.
Her other hand moved to feel for a pulse. The tears only kept coming, beginning to actually fall as she realized with deep despair that.. there was no pulse at all.
Wednesday didn’t have a pulse.
“Hey, hey..” Enid shook her head, fully sinking to the floor from her knees now, sniffling. “Babycakes..”
If there was a time Enid had ever wanted Wednesday to wake up and yell at her for calling her that? It was now.
Please.. let her wake up and yell at her.
“You’re okay.. Wednesday.. hey..”
There was, once again, no response.
The hand supporting the back of Wednesday’s head began to feel a little warm. Due to her suit being white, Enid could see the blood coat her hand. It wasn’t a lot but it was enough.. Wednesday had hit her head.
Tears started falling, and sobs started coming out.
“You stay with me.. S-stay with me, okay?”
Wednesday’s eyes remained closed, but blood began to trickle down her nose. It had to be some form of head trauma, Enid was smart enough to know that.. but she didn’t wanna accept it. This couldn’t be happening.
“N-no! Wednesday, please!” She sobbed, her voice breaking painfully as she cried out.
Her tears fell onto her lifeless lovers face.
As she cried over her, Enid stroked Wednesday's hair. Even at her death it was still soft to the touch.
“W-wednesday!.. Baby, my baby.. please.” Her sobs and words were becoming inaudible as she cried. She’d never sobbed this hard in her life. The pain was immense.
Why did this have to happen? This was never supposed to happen.. the hero always saved the girl.
Well, not always.
Enid knew that now.
Blue and red lights, along with distant sirens filled the air. Enid knew the paramedics and cops were outside but she didn’t wanna let go. She didn’t wanna let her go.
But.. Wednesday was gone.
She’d lost her.
Funerals were always so bleak and depressing.
Wednesday enjoyed them though.. they were a symbol of death— almost like a celebration, really.
Enid hated them.
She hated standing there with bruises on her face, in a black and white suit. Her hair down and brushed to cover most of the cuts on her forehead. She’d walked away from the experience with a heavy heart and facial scars.
It was a beautiful ceremony.
The whole school practically came. Along with Principal Weems and the whole police department.
Enid kept her eyes away from everyone.
All she could focus on was the casket in front of her as it was lowered into the ground. Everything felt somber.
She refused to look at the Addams family. She couldn’t face them.. it was hard to do that. Gomez was a mess, Morticia kept it together and comforted her boys.
Hell, even Thing— Wednesday’s pet Tarantula— was brought in his travel case. The spider even looked sad.
And then there was the speeches. Enid wanted to listen but she honestly felt numb from everything.
Eugene from school had put together the prettiest of flowers— freshly pollinated at his family bee farm.
After the ceremony, the plan was to go to the Addams mansion for a dinner service but.. Enid wasn’t sure if she could handle going. She’d cried more in the past few days since she had in her entire life. She felt tired.
But at least she was alive..
Not everyone could say that.
The large crowd began to slim down after the black casket was buried and laid to rest.
Enid wasn’t sure how but she found herself standing in front of the grave stone, looking down at it.
“So, what now?”
The voice caught her attention.
“Baby, you’re not supposed to be up.. come here.”
Wednesday was dressed in a simple black dress and insisted on wearing a black cardigan over it to hide the various bruises and scrapes on her exposed skin.
There was a thick bandage wrapped around her head but she hid it with a black beanie the best she could.
Wednesday Addams has died that night.
But she was brought back in an ambulance and was put on bed rest. In all honesty, Enid didn’t know if she’d even show up to the funeral given her condition.
Enid opened her arms and the shorter girl made her way over, resting her head under Enid’s chin and on her chest. The best part of today? Enid’s beautiful suit..
She should wear suits more often..
“It’s hard to believe he’s down there..”
Enid hummed in agreement.
The gravestone in front of them read it clear;
‘.. Tyler Galpin..’
‘.. A Beloved Son And Caring Friend..’
The friend part stung. It felt untrue give what had happened. Tyler had almost killed Wednesday.
“We’re gonna be okay, Enid.”
Enid held Wednesday a little tightly.
“I know.. as long as we’re together, right?”
As long as they didn’t loose one another.
The couple met in a tender kiss before they walked back towards the parking lot to join the crowd once again.
