Work Text:
The sun was setting now. Impulse groaned as he stretched, the long day of work settling into his muscles. He could hear a group laughing above him, no doubt flying back to their respective homes. He hurried himself as he packed away his shulkers, hoping to at least make it back before the night truly set in. BDubs was on vacation, so there was no one to sleep the night away for the server.
As he was storing his final shulker, Impulse turned as a sharp whistle sounded behind him. All notes of exhaustion seemed to melt away as he saw Tango waving down from the top of the hill.
“Impulse!” He yelled. “Bonfire at the towers! You coming?”
Impulse gave him a thumbs up as he replied with a simple ‘Yeah’. He raced up the hill, tripping over the occasional stone from his rushed excitement.
Tango smiled as he clapped an arm around Impulse’s back. The pair chatted as they walked for a bit before taking to the sky and heading towards Tango’s base. Impulse smiled as he saw familiar faces on the ground—the same group that had flown over him earlier.
The collected group of Hermits cheered and groaned as the pair landed. Some diamonds exchanged between hands before xB explained everything to Impulse’s confused look.
“Half of them thought you wouldn’t come. Heck, half of them didn’t think I’d come either.”
Impulse chuckled as he greeted his friends with various hugs and handshakes, feigning offense at the implication that he’d skip a Hermit bonfire. Nearly everyone was there, and Impulse found himself looking upon the group as they all laughed and shared stories.
A warm feeling washed over his skin. He was nowhere near the fire, and the sun had long ago set on the horizon, yet it felt as if he was sunbathing on a gorgeous Spring day. His entire body was buzzing, listening and watching as his friends talked or tried to pull of some stupid stunt. Across the way, he caught Tango’s eye and smiled as he came to a wonderful realization.
This is what you love feels like, he thought. I’m sure of it.
