Work Header

Every summertime

Summary:

Nevertheless, it is Saturday, and Saturdays are for novel writing. After Rowan, the monster, Eugene, she feels as if she just went through the most horrific nightmare ever—and not the good kind.

Just before she could rest her slender fingers on the black typewriter, a certain blonde werewolf bursted in their shared room, simultaneously ruining her peace.

Ah. It seems she has forgotten.

Saturdays are also for Enid’s shopping spree. How glorious.

Notes:

Title inspired by the song of the same name from the shang chi album (which was unironically a banger)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The sun shines lustrously today, casting Nevermore in an evergreen glow while complementing the flowers in their garden; the sky has never been more clear with its baby blue color along with occasional glimpses of birds flying.

Wednesday feels rather nauseated—a nice thunderstorm would've brightened the day.

“WEDNESDAY!” Enid’s adorable disturbing voice practically shook the walls, “There’s a big sale at Jericho today! Will you please go with me this time? I promise I won’t buy you any pastel-colored products. Or just colored ones for that matter.”

“Enid, no. I’m trying to produce more murder for my novel, and it’s been getting harder lately.”

“…..Well, hanging out with me while breathing in the fresh air of this beautiful morning would do you plenty.” She pauses. “In terms of, uh, murder ideas. I guess.”

Wednesday pauses in consideration. Enid is better when she’s not using the internet—that’s when her sentences have actual grammar in them along with real sense. A walk around Jericho might be a good activity for her writer’s block—being around Jericho citizens boosts up her homicidal urges, you see.

She supposes she should accept the invitation before her roommate could disgust her further with those illegally cute puppy eyes. Do werewolves have a particular tendency to use them in order to manipulate someone?

——————————————————————————————

20 minutes and two arguments later, Wednesday and Enid are ready to take a stroll down Jericho. One in her checkerboard turtleneck, topped with an obisdian bomber jacket which has white stripes at the collar and the wrists; the other dressed in a cropped pastel jacket and under it a baby blue sweater vest with a white shirt under it.

When they arrived in Jericho, the small town was still as bland as forever. Good. Enid excitedly grabs Wednesday’s hand and practically manhandles her through the section full of shops in this town.

“Here goes nothing.” Wednesday murmurs under her breath.

They begin their shopping spree by entering a shop for beach clothing, since it’ll be summer soon. So soon Wednesday could almost taste the solar heat frying the ozone layer. She actually prefers to feel the burn of sunlight destroying her skin cells, though buying clothes for the upcoming summer trips doesn’t sound too bad.

2 minutes into the store and Enid already has 4 different sets of swimsuits inside her bag (and still looking for more). Wednesday didn’t even bring one!

“Oh? Wendy, why aren’t you buying anything? We agreed we’d share the price, so don’t be shy.”

The other girl makes up an excuse to avoid upsetting her friend, “Uhm, I’m just not sure what I’m looking for. It’s much easier to do that in a mourning clothing store in my hometown.” Enid frowned a bit before shrugging and took something out of her bag, “Here, I thought this might suit you.”

Wednesday hesitantly takes it from her hand. It’s a frilled one piece with two sides divided diagonally; one side is pure black and the other is checkerboard styled, just her type. Wednesday feels a little bit embarrassed— a full on diver suit with an oxygen tank and sometimes a camera is her usual beach outfit, not…this.

“Well? Try it on! We have to make sure we aren’t wasting money, right?” How could Wednesday argue with that?

Enid waited for a few minutes, discussing the flaws of society and cute puppies with Ajax on Discord. Midway through stifling her laughter at Ajax’s memes, she heard the whooshing sound of curtains opening, making her look up.

Her fingers, which were frantically flying across the phone, froze mid-air. It was as if Enid’s nerve circuit has stopped working, because she can’t do anything other than staring at Wednesday in the swimsuit.

The goth teen looked absolutely stunning in the outfit. Pale limbs tangling and rubbing into each other, clear embarrassment written all over her body. However, Enid only finds the action making no sense—Wednesday deserves to be called beautiful in every way. She also finds it to be endearing. The feeling only intensifies with the cute black frills covering her shoulders plus her quickly flustering face. Too flustered for her eyes to meet Enid’s.

“Yes.”

“Wha- I just came out 10 seconds ag-“

“Yes. Buy it. I’ll even pay it for you. Trust me, this outfit was MADE for you and you alone.” Enid smiled gleefully. “See? Half an hour and our spree is already going so well!”

Wednesday is very much confused. But she (begrudgingly) agreed—and Enid thinks her day can’t get better.

(A/N: and she was WRONG *vine boom*)

It’s currently 11:30 pm and Wednesday’s not sure how but she’s holding an almost finished strawberry milkshake, face covered in cute stickers and one shoetie unlaced. In addition to the crimes, there’s four different shopping bags on her arms. Normally she’d encourage it, but she’s more than concerned at how many sins she committed today. She can’t even remember.

“Oh. My. God. Wendyday, I have a genius idea,” The Wendyday in question starts to worry for the both of them, “There is one thing missing from our shopping spree. Friendship Bracelets!”

Enid literally screams (and accidently howls) at the end of her sentence. Wednesday tilts her head to avoid ear bleeding at the big sound and lets out a sigh. Their budget is this close to being as broke as the modern law system. Another item doesn’t seem like a good idea like 15 minutes ago anymore.

“Enid..”

“Please, please? I have never had a friendship bracelet with anyone before, it was just too committal for me. I know you’ve never had one too. But since we are perfect with each other, I think this is time.”

“Stop it, you’re making it sound uncomfortably like a proposal,” The emo girl (“I’m NOT an emo girl!”) huffs in mild exasperation, “But one last time and we’re going back to Nevermore. I’ve messed with the principal enough and I don’t plan on getting expelled. Yet.”

The blonde giggles in satisfaction and skips to the nearest warm looking store. Wednesday follows suit.

Ding! A familiar sound to every store they come in, and usually a tired looking cashier would turn to them and murmur out a ‘hello’. This time, though, a bright looking man in his late 30s popped up from under the counter. Thank god. Wednesday’s having too much fun (fun?) for some broke college student or divorced middle aged to ruin her vibe.

The man smiles warmly at the pair, “Good evening, welcome to Andy’s shop. How can I help you?”

“Good evening to you, too, sir. I was wondering if you might have bracelets in here? Particularly ones for…uh…for..”

Enid whispered a “Friendship bracelet!” to her friend.

“..Friendship bracelets?” It’s not her fault she’s so awkward about this. This is already a big step for her, because you see, the Addams family rejects friendship bracelets, calling them meaningless objects. They prefer the more traditional methods, like a blood oath.

“Got it!” The cashier swiftly comes out from the counter and goes up to a corner. He opens the wooden glass cabinet. Inside it is several accessories: earrings, necklaces, hair pins, and of course, bracelets.

“Which ones do you want?” The man gestures the girls towards the cabinet, moving out of the way to show numerous kinds of bracelets. Wednesday feels like she was going to be sick with how colorful some of them are.

One pair caught the pair’s eyes though.

They were two chain bracelets: one black and one white. Each has a magnetic half of a heart attached to them—when combined, it turns to a full heart. Simple, yet effective.

“I’ll take these, please,” Enid looks impressed when she sees her friend’s choice. She was actually worried that the goth would choose something morbid like usual.

“By the way, are you two dating?” The cashier asks them when they finished paying for the bracelets.

“Huh? Uh—no. We’re not. We’re just, like, friends. You know. Best friends. Roommates. Heterosexual. Probably-”

“-Yes, indeed. We’re just two friends who happen to buy a friendship bracelet for each other. Because. We’re uh. Friends. You know?”

The man in front of them raises an eyebrow at the strange response from both girls. “I guess I’m wrong then, sorry. It’s only because you girls remind me a lot of me and my husband back when we were teens. It was wild in the 90s.”

“He was a hippie guy. Not the kind that likes to travel and do peace protests. He just wears hippie clothes and really chill, Probably because he smokes weed after class with me. He also likes bright colored things and a really optimistic guy too, like you,” He turns to Enid.

“I was the typical goth. Bit of a loner but I survived school without getting bullied just fine. My husband always tried to get me to do more school activities and generally extrovert stuff—for my well being, obviously, but I sneaked out or made excuses whenever I could,” He smiles at Wednesday.

She doesn’t think too much about how similar they were to her and Enid.

The night is still freezing cold when they leave the store. Enid blows into her palms and smiles at Wednesday. She looks….so pretty. Not pretty like how fresh corpses look, but just…pretty. So pretty it hurts Wednesday in a weird way, she realizes.

“Let's try on our very first friendship bracelet!” Enid’s voice snaps the other girl out of her daydream.

The werewolf gently holds her friend’s hand and puts the white chain onto her left wrist, then she does the same to herself with the black chain. They look at each other with a certain something behind their eyes. And they brush their wrists against the other’s.

The gold half-hearts snapped into each other, forming a literal bond between the bracelets. It looks better with the other, they understood the symbolization.

The two girls marvelled at how the silver moonlight casts an enchanting shine to the gold magnet. Then they looked up.

Nevermore, Jericho, the people, everything between and around them seem to have disappeared, leaving only the two alone. Crystal blue eyes meet void black ones. Just like the magnet, it feels as if something is attracting them together, for the urge to lean towards the other is growing bigger and bigger.

Both teens pull away, confused and dazed at what just happened.

Wednesday clears her voice, “It’s getting late. Let’s return to our school before Weems can give us another hour-long lecture.”

“Yeah, let’s—let’s do that,” Enid adjusts her shopping bags and starts running, “I’ll race you! Bet you won’t be quick enough against a werewolf!”

Wednesday stayed still for a second before making a wide grin and followed Enid.

“…You think they saw us?” Tyler whispered.

“Nah. And even if they do, they won’t use this to blackmail us. They’d use something much worse, so shut up and don’t ruin our making out sesh,” Xavier replied before pulling Tyler’s shirt and smashed his lips against the barista’s.

Notes:

This is actually my first publicly published fanfiction so please excuse any mistakes! English isn’t my first language. Criticsms are welcome obviously.

This is saved in my gg docs as “Lesbians fr fr” and sent to my friend first before she encouraged (“ye sure.” she said) to post this on ao3. The xavier x tyler scene here is a crackship but…who knows 👀
