Work Text:
“Check that again, are you sure?” She asked after what felt like a lifetime of just staring at the screen.
The doctor smiled, “Yes, Dana, I’m pretty sure.”
“Like a hundred percent sure?” she asked again. “Is that what I think it is?” her voice trembled and her hand shook as she reached out to point at the visible figure on the screen.
“Yes, Dana. You’re having a baby.” The doctor told her once again. “Are you okay?”
Scully took in a deep breath, her heart raced, and she couldn’t fathom all of what was happening. Yet, a watery smile bloomed on her face.
“Yeah,” she sniffled. “I just can’t believe this. My husband and I have been trying…maybe miracles do happen.” She said, laughing a bit through tears that had started to spill from her eyes.
“Miracles do happen, Dana. Not always, but when they do, they’re the most amazing thing ever. Congratulations.”
Scully smiled at the doctor’s words. It truly was the best thing ever, and she couldn’t wait to tell Mulder and Emily. Oh how she knew those two would be delighted.
When she arrived home, she was greeted by sounds of laughter coming from the living room. There, she saw Mulder and Emily sitting on the couch watching some show on PBS. Emily was clearly enjoying herself while Mulder just watched, very much amused at what was being shown on screen. She couldn’t help but imagine that soon, it wouldn’t just be Emily watching those shows.
“Knock, knock,” she called out, and two heads turned, both with bright smiles on their faces. “Anybody missed me?”
“Mommy!” Emily squealed, quickly leaving her seat and running to her, arms up in the air and ready to be lifted. “I did! I did! I missed you, Mama!” she said as soon as she was in Scully’s arms.
“Oh, I missed you too, Emmybug.” Scully said, pressing kisses on her daughter’s face. “So, so much!”
Emily laughed out loud as she was kissed and tickled. And Mulder watched the two of them with so much love.
“Hi,” Scully said when she spotted Mulder. Emily was comfortably situated in her arms, her head rested against Scully’s shoulder. “Missed me?” she teased.
“Always, Scully, always.” Mulder said, walking towards them and planting a kiss on Scully’s lips. “How did it go?” he asked, referring to Scully’s appointment.
He knew that she had a doctor’s appointment that day. It was routine, that’s what she said, but sometimes, he couldn’t help but worry.
Scully simply smiled, “I’ll tell you later, it’s not bad, but I’ll tell you all about it, okay?”
Mulder nodded, still a bit worried, but her reassuring smile calmed his nerves. She didn’t seem worried, so why should he be?
Dinner went off with a breeze. Emily didn’t fuss, not that she always did, she was always an absolute angel. Mulder cleared the table and cleaned-up the kitchen while Scully went to have some Mommy-Daughter time with Em.
Mulder could hear their laughter from the bathroom all the way to the kitchen. Bath time was always a fun time. Their little girl was a water baby through and through, just like the both of them. He knew by the time they were done, Scully would be soaked with water. He breathed out a chuckle when he heard another shriek of laughter from Emily, and he continued to get everything done.
When he was done, Mulder headed straight upstairs. He stopped by Emily’s room to tuck her in, and there he saw Scully lulling Emily to sleep. The little girl was knackered, not just from bath time, but from the day-out she and Mulder had earlier that day. Approaching them slowly, Scully motioned for him to stay silent and he just nodded. Emily was drifting to sleep – her thumb had sneaked its way to her mouth and her breathing pattern had changed. She looked just like Scully was when she was that age, but with Mulder’s features.
“Night, night, pumpkin.” Mulder whispered as he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against Emily’s forehead. “Daddy loves you, sleep tight.”
Scully’s heart swelled with love. Her eyes watered as another realization hit her that soon it wouldn’t be just one child of theirs that Mulder would be tucking in with her. She quickly wiped her eyes so Mulder wouldn’t see, but it was too late.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked, concern laced on his voice.
“Nothing. I just can’t help but think of how lucky I am.” She told him.
He softly smiled and pulled her in for a hug, kissing her on top of her head.
“I’m just gonna say goodnight, and then we’ll talk.” She said. Mulder nodded and watched her as she kissed Emily’s forehead and whispered how much she loved her. He watched them with so much longing in his heart.
They quietly left Emily’s room and went into theirs. They sat at the end of the bed, facing each other, and their Scully began.
“My appointment went well. Really well,” she started. “And I have something really important to tell you.”
Mulder nodded, prompting her to continue. With a shaky breath, she said, “I’m pregnant.”
Mulder’s jaw dropped. It was comical – his eyes wide, jaw open, and just in disbelief for a moment.
“Are you– are you serious?” he asked.
Scully nodded, unable to utter words because she knew that if she did, she’d burst into tears.
“Oh my god, Scully!” Mulder exclaimed, jumping from his seat. Pure joy evident in his voice. The next thing Scully knew, she was being lifted and spun around.
Laughter bubbled deep from within their chests. It was more than just a joyous moment. It was a moment they’ve waited for, hoped for.
“Never give up on a miracle.” He whispered to her after he let her down and pulled her in for another hug.
It has been two weeks since they’ve found out she was pregnant again. Within those days they’ve only told her mother and Skinner. Maggie was delighted, beyond happy for the both of them. And Skinner, well, he was happy for them too. But they haven’t told Emily yet.
They planned on telling her after Scully’s doctor’s appointment. They wanted everything to be quite perfect when they told her.
“Do you think she’ll like it?” Scully asked Mulder as they walked out of the bookshop. They wanted to give her a doll, but opted for a big sister book instead.
“Yeah, and you know how she loves books.” Mulder pointed out. Scully nodded; true, Emily did love books and reading.
“Alright,” Scully said. “I can’t wait.”
Mulder grinned, “Me too, Scully. Me too.”
Emily was at Maggie’s the whole day and she was delighted to see her parents. After being showered with hugs and kisses, she went back to coloring the picture she was working on before her parents arrived.
They were at the living room and Maggie had given them some privacy to break out the news to Emily.
Mulder and Scully observed Emily for a few moments before they went down to her level. Scully was a bit nervous, for some reason, but a reassuring look from Mulder put her at ease.
“Emily, honey, Mommy and Daddy has something to tell you.” Scully said, catching Emily’s attention.
The little girl looked up to her and quirked her head. Scully had to smile. As much as she looked so much like her, the expression on Emily’s face at that moment reminded her so much of Mulder.
“Remember what you said you wanted for last Christmas?” this time it was Mulder who asked.
Emily’s eyes lit up. She knew exactly what she wished last Christmas.
“A puppy?!” she exclaimed, her blue eyes sparkling.
Mulder suppressed a laugh and smiled instead, “Uhhh, no pumpkin, the other one.”
Emily tilted her head from side to side, obviously thinking of what the other wish was. She let out a gasp when she remembered.
“A baby sister?!”
Scully chuckled, “Not yet a baby sister, Emmybug, but a baby sibling.”
Emily’s eyes widened once more and jumped up to hug Scully. She may only be four years old, but her ability to grasp and understand situations has always been very impressive.
“You’re going to be a big sister, bubba.” Scully said to her.
Emily was so happy, just like her parents were. She became even happier when Mulder handed her the book, which she immediately hugged close to her heart. When they showed her the sonogram pictures, she gasped and was at awe at seeing her future baby sibling.
“I can’t wait for the baby to be here, Mommy.” She told Scully. “I’ll be the best big sister ever.”
With that, Mulder and Scully were sure of it.
