Work Text:

“Harrington… Steve… Stevie, wake up.”

A rough hand pressed against the side of Steve’s face and gave it a gentle push which effectively just pushed his head further into the pillow he was laying on. Sleep was all Steve wanted to focus on. He had spent the entire day before working at Family Video and then spent all night at the Hideout. He didn’t arrive home until some ungodly hour in the morning and now he was being forced awake by an annoying hand in his face.

And a rather insistent knocking from somewhere in the house.

“Steve someone is at the door, please tell them to fuck off.”

Begrudgingly, Steve sat up and ran a hand through his hair as he used the other to stifle a yawn. He looked down to his left and couldn’t help but grin fondly. Eddie was sprawled out on his stomach, wrapped up in his sheets. His wild hair was everywhere covering his face and the pillow underneath. Steve didn’t resist the urge to touch him; he placed a warm hand on Eddie’s bare shoulder blade before dragging it down the planes of his back where he inevitably met the sheet at his hips.

“Mm, that’s nice,” Eddie mumbled into the pillow, “ ‘d be a lot nicer if whoever was at the door fucking died, though.”

Steve couldn’t help the sudden laugh that escaped him. His face crinkled and his shoulders shook. Only Eddie could make him feel so light and joyful without trying. He leaned down to press a quick, fleeting kiss to Eddie’s shoulder. “I’ll see what I can do,” Steve murmured as he slipped out of the bed. He surveyed the discarded clothes from the night before that littered the floor of his bedroom but decided against them.

He quickly rummaged through his dresser and pulled on a pair of sweatpants. He grabbed a shirt in his hands and headed out of the room as he struggled to tug it on over his head.

“I’m coming – Shit – I’m coming!”

Steve very nearly tripped at the bottom of the stairs leading to the front door. He huffed loudly and made his way over, yanking the door wide open with probably too much force and not enough effort to hide his irritation.

“What? What? Whaaa- Robin. What’re you doing here?” Steve asked, suddenly very on edge. He gripped the edge of the door tightly in his hand and pulled it closer to his body in an attempt to shield the house from Robin’s eyes.

Robin rolled her eyes at him, “Good morning, Robin. How are you? Oh, I’m great, Steve thanks for asking.”

A groan escaped Steve’s lips and he pressed his forehead against the door. He was not in the mood to do this. He couldn’t do this. Not right now. He knew that Robin would want to come inside and he couldn’t let her. Not with Eddie asleep upstairs in his bed. He hadn’t even had a chance to talk to Robin about any of this. Steve very suddenly felt clammy and his heart was beating much too fast in his chest.

“Earth to dingus, come in dingus,” Robin said, snapping her fingers at Steve.

Steve snapped his head back in her direction and he could feel that his eyes were wide and he probably looked a little wild. Like an animal backed into a corner. Honestly that didn’t feel too far off from the truth.

“Are you okay, Steve? You look… I don’t know how you look but it ain’t good.”

Robin reached a hand out as if to feel for a temperature but Steve took a small step back. He knew he was gross and didn’t want to be touched. After being out all day and up all night he was in desperate  need of a shower.

“Why do you look so nervous all of a sudden?” Robin asked, almost sounding a little hurt. “Why are you sweating so much? Why do you look so tired? And why do-”

Robin cut herself off and at first Steve was confused. He out if everybody knew just how long Robin could go once she got started. He looked at her, confused, until he noticed that she was staring directly over his shoulder. Steve whipped his head around and let out a sigh.

Eddie was shuffling his way down the stairs. Completely shirtless but wearing what looked to be an old pair of Steve’s gym shorts.

“Mornin’ Buckley,” he greeted sleepily before turning to head towards the kitchen.

Both Steve and Robin watched him disappear further into the house in complete silence. Finally, Steve slowly turned his head back around to see Robin fixing him with a self satisfied smirk and raised eyebrows. She clicked her tongue against her lower lip and looked somewhere between finding the situation scandalous and hilarious.

“N-no, it’s not what you think, Rob. This is a big misunderstanding. You’ve gotta believe me. Listen, I am telling you I- You better listen to me, Robin.”

Steve was floundering. His heart was pumping erratically and he knew he probably looked insane as he tried desperately to figure out a way to explain what exactly was happening. But Robin continued to look at him seemingly unfazed. She crossed her arms over her chest and took a step closer to Steve.

She leaned in and scrunched her nose up just a little as she spoke conspiratorially.. “You and Eddie are more than just friends. Aren’t ya, Steve?”

Steve could feel his face flush hot and the heat spread down his neck to his chest. His mouth was dry and he wanted to sink down through the floor. He couldn’t bring himself to talk. All he could do was make a small hum in affirmation as he rigidly nodded his head.

Robin laughed.

Like, she really laughed.

And while it definitely eased some of the tension out of Steve’s body, he also just wanted to slam the door in her face. But he rolled his eyes and let her get it out of her system. When she finally stopped she carefully wiped under her eyes and smiled cheekily back at Steve. She was reveling in his obvious discomfort. Robin took a step forward and patted Steve on the arm.

“I’ll get out of your hair, for now. But we work an extra long shift tomorrow so don’t think you’re getting off the hook that easily,” she chuckled and leaned to the side a bit to shout over Steve’s shoulder, “Bye Eddie, it was nice to see you!”

Steve glared at Robin closed the door firmly as she walked off still laughing to herself. He groaned loudly and ran a hand over his face as he turned around and made his way towards the kitchen. Eddie was standing in front of the coffee maker with two mugs set in front of him on the counter. Steve slid behind him and snaked both of his arms around Eddie’s waist while he hooked his chin over his shoulder.

“You had to come downstairs looking like that?” Steve questioned as he pressed a small kiss against Eddie’s neck.

Eddie hummed and chuckled softly, “In all fairness, I thought you’d murdered whoever was at the door.”
