Chapter 1: The Unknown Heir

Chapter Text

The first time Kara saw her ex-girlfriend—scratch that— ex-fiancée, was four years after her whole life; she might sound a bit dramatic but considering Lena was her whole life, the crux and pinnacle of it four years ago, she has earned the right to overdramatize her heartbreak.

Kara saw her ex-fiancée at the infamous National City xenology science conference five days ago when she escorted her adoptive mother and her sister as both women are professionals in the field. Eliza even gave a talk and Alex presented her new Krazian virus vaccine to help them adapt to earth.

And then right after two speakers, was Lena Luthor of L-Corp, she knows Luthor Corp has been renamed to L-Corp and moved their headquarters right into the heart of her city. What Kara didn’t know was Lena Luthor, her ex-fiancée was the new CEO as she was introduced at the event.

She felt a rage burn through her like never before but stayed her emotions when her mother’s, bless her heart, soft hands stroked her knuckles in the soothing manner Eliza always does. She stayed her emotions when Eliza and Alex, her traitorous family smiled at Lena when she greeted them.

Kara stayed her emotions long enough to give Lena a curt nod and leave her hand hanging when she tried to shake hers as she had tried to shake Eliza and Alex’s, congratulated them on their breakthrough and her traitorous family had forgone Lena’s hand and pulled her into a hug.

The words, “You’re family Lena.” Hanged in the air and pierced at Kara’s heart and eyes. Her heart, conflicted and her eyes, a scorching glare at the woman. Lena knew she wasn’t welcome, not by Kara anyway and turned to leave until her son had hugged her legs and she leaned down to pick him up.

Lena had turned to Alex because she knew the only way Samantha Arias, her good friend will set her son loose in an auditorium full of people would be if Alex Danvers was within the vicinity. And she was right when she saw the moment the two women were locked in the gaze of unfulfilled sexual tension that had enwrapped them in their college days back in Metropolis University.

Where they had all found and lost their teenage loves; loves that still burned bright in their eyes as shocked brown bores into amused brown eyes.

Sam had always looked at Alex with amusement in her eyes.

Kara knew the moment she saw the little boy that he was Lena’s. The cupid bow lips , the nose and the pale skin. She wondered when Lena had given birth that they all didn’t know.

Eliza had guessed the boy’s age to be a little over three years but Lena said he was younger than that. It had left a frown on the woman’s face which was softened when the boy had said something funny pointing at a bald man with his back to them calling him no hair Lexy making them all laugh.

He was a big ball of sunshine that though Kara hadn’t said a word to his mother or even looked at her, she couldn’t help but laugh and smile warmly at the boy as he spoke asking them who they are.

Eliza had fussed over the blonde-haired boy with blue eyes as Lena introduced them and handed the boy to Eliza at her request. And Kara, loving children so much couldn’t not fuss over the boy too. So much she made grabby hands and with Lena’s permission Eliza handed him to her. Lena watched with repressed solemnity as Kara played with her son.

And when Sam had managed to snap out of her Alex-induced stupor, she whispered something to Lena that made her panic and asked for her son back before leaving in haste.

Eliza had stayed calm, contemplative as she watched Kara and the boy but said nothing and from the look Alex was giving her, they both knew. The only one who didn’t know was Kara.

Because Kara was too resentful of Lena to notice, too jealous of Lena finding life after her and even moving on to have a child with another person, to recognize what had stood in front of her.

Without a word, they all went home. Their wins and accomplishments discarded to the soundtrack of Kara’s resentful mutterings about her ex-fiancée and Jack, the man she had heard Lena dated right after her.

The next time Kara saw Lena was on TV was three days later when Cat Grant had summoned her into her office and pointed at the announcement Lena was making with Jack, asking Kara why she was now hearing of a merger between Spheerical Industries and L-Corp when Snapper had confirmed assigning Kara to L-Corp.

Kara’s answer had been a brave and risky, “I told Snapper I would never cover Lena Luthor even if it will cost me my job.” Cat had never known her like that in the nearly four years the blonde has been working for her. Two as her assistant right out of college and going on two since she promoted her as a cub reporter.

“I’m sorry Ms Grant, I know you fought hard for Snapper to take me under his wings. I will do anything but Lena Luthor.” She backtracked, sheepishly she rubbed her neck but Cat stood perplexed and none the wiser her internal turmoil. “I mean, any story on anything and anyone except her.”

Cat doesn’t know a lot of things but she does know what makes Kara Danvers tick. She does know Kara is meek and pliant under her many, many variations of glares that always made the blonde mess of a woman quake but what she had seen in her eyes then was a blatant and risky resilience she had only seen in their city’s superhero.

Cat has had her share of suspicions nearly two years ago when Supergirl came out. She had equated the confident and haughty blonde superhero to her clumsy and meek assistant ensuing many debates in the space of fort-eight hours until Kara’s shapeshifter father figure, J’onn, a Martian, had interfered to allay the woman and put her suspicions to rest.

Cat may one day need to revise that encounter and probe it for any loopholes but at the time Kara was risking everything she had worked for, everything she had endured under Cat, the woman only knew one thing; surrender.

Because she knows Kara will not put her career on the line for something as banal as hating a Luthor the way the masses did. She knew better, at least Cat likes to think she had taught her better.

“Fine. You will swap with Martins and stay on Edge.” Kara had moved to argue. “Edge or Luthor. Those are your options.” It was inflected in warning leaving no room for negotiation.

Edge is a slimy pig and a sexist bastard but Kara would endure him than see Lena happy with Jack and her adorable son who looks nothing like Jack. She would rather Edge than be anywhere near Lena whom she’d pined over for the years they’ve been apart.

Not that she will admit to herself, not when she thought she was right to have made that decision. There were facts even if Lena had denied them, had smiled years later, been polite at their encounter and even agreed for her to hold her son.

Kara won’t be swayed by those intensely alluring green eyes anymore.

The next time Kara heard of Lena Luthor was a further two days when her sister had snuck behind her back to have lunch with Sam. To be fair, Alex had planned lunch with Sam and Lena had passed by to drop her son whom they learned at the xenology event was called Killian but Lena fondly called the toddler “Kay”.

When Lena had left in a hurry after fussing over her little boy and promising to pick him up soon after kissing his hair, Alex had watched the boy like a hawk even as she played with him.

And when Sam had left to the bathroom and asked her to watch him for a few minutes, Alex had done the craziest thing. She had called her mother whom she’s had hushed conversations with after the event about what they both observed hoping her mother would advise her against it.

“It’s Illegal.” Eliza had reasoned the first few seconds. “but there’s no denying he is hers even if the science behind it will be crazy to dissect and discern.” Eliza had said nothing else, humming to herself and when Alex had asked if she should do it, the woman’s answer had been. “At least I need to know if that beautiful boy is my grandson Alex.”

That sealed it for Alex as she stole little locks of blonde hair from the boy’s comb in the change bag Lena brought. She had looked through it earlier for a wipe and found the comb then so it was easy and it would not garner weird stares from neighbouring diners as  to why a woman would be plucking a toddler’s hair in a high end restaurant.

The boy was too bubbly and it reminded her of her sister so much. She needed to know.

And when Alex had known at her lab at the DEO, her mother on facetime as she read out the results of the DNA test, Eliza’s shock was replaced with heartbreak while Alex seethed for her sister.

All this time, they had blamed Kara for breaking them up, for acting in haste and not believing Lena when she said she had nothing to do with the incident. And yet Lena was keeping the biggest secret of them all, harbouring a half-Kryptonian child regardless of how he came about.

So when Eliza had told her to wait for her to get on a red eye before telling her sister, Alex, impetuous and angry Alex was never a good combination, went to her sister’s apartment and spilled about going to lunch with Sam.

And when Kara had finished berating her for her betrayal at seeing Lena, Alex had explained how that came about. And then proceeded further to ask her sister a series of questions about Kryptonian women’s reproductive system.

Kara knew nothing special to offer so Alex asked her fly her to the fortress for some information gathering. She had urged Kara to leave and would ping her to come for her when she had found what she was looking for.

It was then she learned that some Kryptonians before their evolutionary age were intersex and women can impregnate their fellow women as well but the science guild enacted a rule that forced them to surgically remove one to fit the idea of male and female.

It was weird and confusing for a planet that supported homosexuality yet it seemed they just couldn’t accept one person bearing two reproductive capabilities.

So when her sister had picked her up and they had continued their talk, albeit in a different direction, Alex knew without a doubt that Killian was not Jack’s son as speculated by them but Kara’s.

Of course the DNA test was proof but the proof that her sister, who didn’t know she was reproductively altered and still had the capability to impregnate a woman with as little as a drop of her blood, especially in contact with a human woman.

“Did you have sex with Lena in college or at a time when you were wounded?”

Alex had to ask because back in Metropolis, when Kara was in senior year in college, Clark had pulled her out of school one weekend and trained her, pushed her to the limit of losing her powers because Kara had insisted she wanted to be a superhero someday despite Clark’s warnings.

And there was the sex education part Eliza had taken Kara through when she had caught her researching girl-on-girl sex content. The talk came, followed by talks of also minding her strength with Lena and that scared Kara.

The thought that she could accidentally break the fragile human caused her to have a chaste relationship with the woman. And it was hard, it got hard until her solar flare granted them the advantage and the opportunity to know each other intimately, carnally.

Kara shrugged, folded three pizza slices together and took a large bite. She has been in a mood for the past week since she encountered Lena who thereafter seems to be everywhere. Billboards, television and Catco’s next week issue currently has the woman’s face plastered all over it.

She sees her everywhere. Even in her dreams.

“Kara, I’m serious.” Alex prompted again and Kara saw her sister was serious but now she too is serious as to why her sister is interested in what little sex life she had with Lena back in college.

“Why?” She wiped her hand and turned to her sister, paused the movie playing and commanded silence in her loft. “I know she was your friend Al, and I know you’re still in love with Sam. If you want to be in their circle again, go ahead.” Even she knew her words were disingenuous.

“It’s not about that. Just answer my question. It’s not some crazy non-sequitur, I’m segueing my way there.”

Kara thought about it and she arrived at that same weekend Alex had thought of. She had been dating Lena for two years since their sophomore year. They dated secretly until Alex caught them in some kinky make up session in their senior year.

She had snitched on Kara to her family including Clark whom Lex Luthor, Lena’s older brother,  had started a public battle with as Superman. They were still such good friends as Lex and Clark until a year later when Clark would publicly support superman and become an enemy of his best friend.

That was why Clark had come to train her because suddenly his cousin was in love with Lena Luthor, a girl he had known and loved like his little sister and even introduced them. But his belief in the Luthors being good people was waning and he didn’t want Kara to come up empty should Lena turn on her like Lex had turned on him.

Kara had vehemently argued Lena was nothing like her brother, her trust and belief predicated on her innate trust on the love they shared for each other.

So when Clark had manhandled her in training and caused her to blow her powers, Kara had returned to Lena’s apartment she had nearly moved into, sore in all her body and being human then, Kara felt it was time to christen their chaste relationship when Lena had kissed her fiercely, and with need.

They had dated chastely for two years and the sexual tension had built up. Kara had abstained, scared she would hurt Lena and Lena was one horny young woman on a mission that night and it ignited something in Kara.

Lena was a wild one, something Kara had always thought of in the privacy of her mind. No woman will ever hold a candle to the passion Lena ignited in her. And when Lena bit on her lips on the throes of her orgasm and Kara had bled into her mouth, they both knew nothing of what they would be creating.

It took her two days to recover her powers and for those two days, Lena who didn’t know Kara was an alien nor even related to superman, had kissed and sucked on her lower lip that she bit to make her better.

Their intertwined fate was sealed in blood.

Kara had loved those two days that had them unhinge their sexual desires as Lena had a habit of biting and scratching that made Kara look like she had been mauled by a bear every time.

But Kara loved being bitten, she liked being scratched. She liked all the wild things Lena did. She loved them all.

And in those two days, one evening when Kara had resolved Lena was the only woman for her, she had proposed and Lena, that wild and kinky woman had made crazy love to Kara in response to the proposal.

Kara was underneath the earth, scorched and burning with the passion of earth’s yellow sun, because she had been over the moon before and it wasn’t as climactic as the pleasure Lena evoked from her, marking her even more.

Her territory, she had mused.

She had wished she could lose her powers more if it afforded Lena the power to mark her as she did and when all the marks had disappeared from her body and Kara was apprehensive Lena would ask, the thing that destroyed them happened then.

Alex nudged her back into the room, “That Clark beat up weekend.” That’s what Alex had called it and they all ended up calling it that. Clark had used training to beat her up to deter her from ever wearing the cape as he attacked her with the different tactics the many aliens he had fought as superman used.

Eliza had called Martha Kent, Clark’s adoptive mother and they had given him a stern talking to. It was all fear, they knew but he didn’t need to go fist to fist with his untrained cousin to deter her. It was Kara’s decision and none of them can make it for her.

“Killian is your son Kar.” Alex finally says, picks up her tote bag and hands Kara the manila envelope. “It has my research from the fortress about your capability to impregnate a woman and how. And it has a DNA test I conducted matching you and Lena as his parents, 99.99%.” Kara’s mouth was left agape in shock but Alex continued, her voice soft and empathetic, “Mum knows, she is on a red-eye here. She wanted me to wait but I couldn’t.” Kara nodded, her lips thinned, kept nodding. “You have every right to be angry. I’m right there with you. I will support you even if you want to sue for custody. He is your child and she took that away from you.”

Kara disagreed, tried to reason over the fact that Lena, despite the animosity Kara showed her in their last hours was not that cruel, “She said he is two years and a half Al, he can’t be my son.”

“She lied Kar.” Alex huffs, frustrated. “He has blonde hair and blue eyes. Mum saw it, I saw it. You were too busy resenting her to recognize your own son in your arms Kar.” Alex is known for her tough love and she realized the moment those words rang true to her sister.

The silence hung in the air for a an interminably long time until Kara spoke, “Thank you Al.” She hadn’t even opened the file. Alex opted to stay with her but Kara asked for space, “Please tell J’onn I need some time for myself.” Alex agreed, “Thank you for this, you’re always looking out for me.” She hugged her sister.

Kara didn’t ask her to leave but she sister went into her bedroom and Alex knew then that she had to leave. Kara needed the space to think and Alex would give her that. So she called from the door.

“Mum and I will see you for breakfast in the morning and you’ll let us know what you want to do okay?”

“Okay Al, goodnight.” She said. Not a hint of sadness nor anger. Just nonchalance and it scared Alex.

When has Kara ever been known to not show her emotions? She wore them like a badge of honour.
